Can't find potassium Iodide anywhere....will kelp help with radiation fallout?
Hi....I'm from Oregon, a friend of mine and I have been on the phone with health food/vitamin stores for the past couple of hours....they are all sold out of the KI tabs, also known as Postassium Iodide. One clerk stated she would be a rich woman right now if she had any in stock....inundated with calls. Another stated that if I did find a supplier to call them back and let them know where to get more.

I have read that kelp tablets help, but can't find out what dosage to take to keep our thyroids healthy in the event of nuclear fallout from Japan.

If anyone has any info, please post.

Also, I've read that high levels of potassium rich foods are helpful....such as bananans and eating seaweed, like in miso soup has been successful in decreasing radiation levels in the body.

Please pin so we can add helpful information for those of us on the West Coast.

I do want you all to know, I trust God in all things....if we cannot find the things we need, he is our shield...but it is a wise man/woman who prepares.

Thanks and God Bless

So how much potassium iodine are you supposed to take?

And how far ahead of fallout do you start taking it?

etc etc.

They used miso post- Nagasaki in Japan, IIRC, and had some success with that.

Try this... Read it a few years ago. Get regular iodine, stick your index finger up to the first knuckle once a day for about 14/21 days. Go get some now for you, family and friends. Will it work, dunno but it probably won't hurt.

Yes, kelp is high in iodine and is noted to help protect against radiation poisoning and also to help detoxify from heavy metals.
One of my 225 mcg supplies 150% of daily iodine requirement, but in Japan, the diet is usually higher than that in general in iodine.
It takes time for the iodine to fully work it's way into the system, so starting soon is a good idea.
Nice thing about kelp tablets, is that they tend to be inexpensive.. at least for now.

"Paint" iodine on your belly or forearms in a patch and see how long it takes the color to fade, if it's less than a few hours do it again the next day (use different skin areas each time).

When you get to the point where the color stays 24 hours, you're 'full'.

Done all the time for many decades:

I have been intaking about 1000 - 2000 micrograms of iodine as tincture of iodine (2 drops) or betadine (1 drop) with meals in a glass of water for over 2 years. Many problems I thought were "just me getting old" are gone.

If you are iodine sensitive this will kill you. Rare.

Lugol's iodine can be purchased at pet stores, it's for saltwater aquariums.

I'm no doctor, just trying to help with alternative methods of acquiring KI.

Read this before ingesting any kelp:

[link to agingresearch.wordpress.com]

snip:

A study of herbal kelp supplements led by University of California-Davis public health expert Marc Schenker, concludes that its medicinal use may cause inadvertent arsenic poisoning and health dangers for consumers, especially when overused.

Schenker and two researchers evaluated nine over-the-counter herbal kelp products and found higher than acceptable arsenic levels in eight of them.

Re: Can't find potassium Iodide anywhere....will kelp help with radiation fallout?
KI pills at 130 mg have about 230mcg (micrograms) of iodine according to the internet. 130mg is the FDA's recommendation for an emergency doseage.

The Kelp I was able to get at the Vitamin shoppe has 225mcg of iodine (150% of your daily value) in a 125mg pill.

I'm thinking Kelp (or any other multivitamin) with over 100mcg of iodine will be fine. All we're trying to do with iodine is to "tie up" your thyroid with healthy iodine so if there is radioactive iodine in the vicinity, your thyroid will not process it and you will not get a damaged thyroid.

Shane has a description on his website as to how to use regular medicinal iodine as a secondary method of getting iodine into your system without overdosing the amount.

Don't have time to find the actual article ... but it is buried somewhere in all of the data he has available. Basically it is getting the HIGHER concentration medicinal iodine and then dipping one finger (index or little, don't remember) in it up to the first joint (NO MORE!!!) ?daily? (I think). Using the finger system roughly adjusts for the size of the person, from little kid to full size adult.
