Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1294102So, if the MOX stuff is released in the same quantity as Chernobyl, then YES it's 2 million Chernobyl at once. Good God, is this correct?! |

It's 2 MILLION TIMES more toxic than uranium!! In the meantime, there have been suggestions that an incident at reactor 3 would inherently be more dangerous than at reactors 1 and 2 because it burns "mixed oxide fuel" (MOX) containing plutonium. Plutonium is produced during nuclear fission, so is present in all reactor cores - the longer the fuel has been there, the more plutonium will be present, up to about 1%. In some countries, spent fuel rods are re-processed and the plutonium set to one side. However, Japan - in an attempt to be more frugal with a valuable resource - has a programme that mixes the plutonium coming out of the re-processing facility back into new fuel rods that also contain uranium. This is MOX fuel. So, reactor 3 fuel rods will contain more plutonium than those in reactor 1. But this would only become an issue if there were an explosion or a catastrophic meltdown. The radioactive release so far has been of much lighter fission products and of short-lived nuclei generated in cooling water, which are identical no matter which fuel is used. Based on the figure 2+ meters exposed (and the answer you give above), how long are we talking before eminate meltdown? Does the Media even know what MOX is and that the "little" venting of steam from #3 is not a mild thing but a potential killer?? They are using Sea Water to cool it...what is the Cause/Affect (if any)?? Peace In/Out I asked this question too on another thread.... all of the responses I got from different people was that the rods are 4 meters long. Where they got this info... I don't know... but they all said the same thing so take it for what it is. If 2.3m exposed and they ARE 4m long.... thats over 50% exposure... Thanks for getting back to me!! They are using Sea Water to cool it...what is the Cause/Affect (if any)?? Peace In/Out Meltdown starts when there isn't anything to seperate the rods and they get too hot. With 50% of the rods exposed, that means that 50% of the core is melting( or at a point where melting can happen.) From what I've read , the water or graphite is used as the rod seperator...so now water, no seperation...melting starts. |
