Assuming you mean s = seconds that would give us: 60 cps == 1 CPM, is that what you're finding? Also thanks, welcome aboard.

I am unfamiliar with cps. Assuming you mean s = seconds that would give us: 1 cps == 60 CPM, is that what you're finding? Also thanks, welcome aboard.

Not exactly sure. just took the gieger counter out of the disater cart here in the ER. it told us 1 per second. i would assume your conversion is correct. it seems to me that i might get a more accurate reading with minutes, because of such a low reading. i will try again some other time.

Cool, never seen one of those before. Sounds like a badass disaster cart. The meter looks nice. [link to ecx.images-amazon.com] Apparently it's programmable, but the scale toggle is on the front so yes try flipping it to 1 minute.

Added to top post! Also good job doing multiple passes. Did you do a free-air test where you hold the probe up outside?

Looks like Pro-Gear you've got. [link to www.imagesco.com]

Nice to be at a hospital with access to the disaster gear like the positive pressure HAZMAT suits.

Thanks for starting this thread! We are in Oregon and are very happy to see a fellow Oregonian who will post readings from your new gear. Got our KI and RAD stickers on the way. Bought the last little bottle of Iodine on the shelf at pharmacy Saturday. Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it! Look forward to keeping an eye on this thread.

We also have a decontamination/ treatment area with a negative or positive hepa filtraion + separate septic. Hamilton MT is home to Rocky mountain labs, which is a level 4 fedral lab. they study all kinds of nasty stuff there. Hope i never have to use any of this stuff for real.

I am running a similar thread from the East Coast. I work in a lab with a Geiger counter. I will post all info over to here and if you would do likewise.

I believe that these are hourly readings, not CPM. The areas of concern, however, are "under inspection." This means we likely won't know anything until more locations require "inspection." Then it'll be too late (for them).

Howdy! Feel free to use any data from this thread in your thread. The more the merrier. I am glad this one isn't pinned since we have no coast-state stations yet. If you get any people on the west coast with data on your roster I'll vote to pin your thread.

Thanks for your effort centrist77.

Oh, and they are in nano-grays. So, while even 300 is higher than normal, from what I've read (at GLP, thankyou) this won't kill you.

Here's a good post summarizing the various differences...

...

this 7400 nGy becomes 7.4000 mGy

would that make less than 1 rad?

someone help me with the math
thanks

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1294751

I think it is 7.4 rads
go here and use this free online conversion program:

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1294751

"normal" is like 50nGy. So 7400 / 50 = 150 times the normal level. Alarming, but not going to kill you...

Note
1000 nX = 1 uX (nano = 10^-9)
1uX = 1000 mX (micro = 10^-6)
1000 mX = 1 X (milli = 10^-3)

Note too that 100 RAD = 1 Sievert (Sv) If you ever hear them saying rads in full numbers or Sieverts in factions like 1/2, then run like Hell!!

Most meters measure these in rads/hr or Sieverts per hour. Normal is like 0.15 uSV/hr or 0.00000015 Sieverts per hour. If you ever get 1 Sievert of radiation or (100 rads) your are getting into really big trouble. Most folks see about 0.002 Sv per year...

Here is a nice meter at normal levels:

Hope this helps.

Quoting: Larse

yes, that helped a lot, but don't we have to factor in whether beta or alpha or gamma or whatever

no very familiar with these different types of radiation thanks

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1294751

Alpha radiation is stopped by about anything... skin, paper, plastic. The only concern really with it is an alpha particle getting inside your body through inhalation or ingestion

Beta radiation is nastier. Causes burns on skin... can penetrate thin plastic. Need a few inches of concrete or lead to stop it.

Gamma is awful... unlike Alpha and Beta (which are particles with mass)... Gamma rays are pure energy with no mass and travel at near the speed of light. They penetrate straight through the body.... need feet of concrete or earth, several inches of solid lead to minimize its effect (you technically can never stop it... only minimize how potent it is by the time it reaches your body)

Hi all,

I'm on the west coast, waiting to see what happens.

Wondering if it's worth buying a geiger counter or maybe one of the yellow civil defense ones on Ebay?

Input plz. Thx
