You're a fucking idiot and a prime example of the type of asshole that makes me want to stop reporting here. For your information, I have encouraged the other stations to keep reporting here. I am but one participant in the group.

Please, do yourself a favor and take your meds.

Thank you to the station operators whom have participated, and I encourage you to start a new monitoring thread at GLP should you so choose.

Many thanks for starting this interesting thread! I guess it is good that we did not have as much excitement as expected :)
Since this thread is linked I will try to report here first. I am not real sure how the site here works but I think the thread will last as long as it gets a post now and then. If anyone starts a new thread be sure to post the link here and I will follow.

This awesomely sensible thread did worlds to calm my qualms...

Now, if I only hadn't seen that link to a Nippon site (and failed to bookmark it!) showing a Massive increase in radiation at Fukushima #1 since the 7th!

Will periodically check back for updates...
again, thanks to all of you!

Phoenix, Arizona - Last Reading 4/10/11 0845 hrs 14 CPM (Previously 18 CPM)

wind = calm
temp = 48°F
avg = 15.7 CPM
std = 1.6 CPM

Some analysis of my data collected over the past ~4 weeks continues to suggest that the data from 3/16-3/17 is statistically different from the baseline. A "t-test" indicates a 98+% probability that the data from those days does not match the rest. Of course at the time I didn't have sufficient baseline data to know that those days were out of whack. If I recall, those were also the days that Programmer saw significant increases at Yellowstone. I suspect that we actually tracked an anomaly.

Location: near Cheyenne, Wyoming
Elevation: 6200 feet
Instruments: Ecotest MKS-05 Terra-P dosimeter radiometer

Method: Open Air, Swipe / 3 minutes

1. Date/Time: 04/10/11 @ 20:00 hrs MST
CPM= 13 (.13 uSv/h)

1. Cheyenne, WY-13 CPM 04/10/11 @13:00 hrs MST

Something really weird happened about 20 minutes after I took that reading. My alarm went off, and for a few seconds I was reading .52 uSV/h.

Then over the next 15-20 seconds it went back down to .13 which has been the baseline today.

I have no explanation what-so-ever for this event, but I
can tell you that it freaked me out a bit.

Everything seems fine now. I didn't even know that this unit had an alarm until tonight.

I don’t own any fiesta ware, and the detector was in the room on the west end of my house where it always sits unless I take it outside.

I have walked around the house with it before and nothing of significance was recorded. In fact the readings indoors have always been a bit lower than outdoors.

The window was also open when this event occurred, which is another reason I freaked out a bit. Nothing has happened since then though. applause

Driggs went into alarm lock 3 times tonight. I put the stream back on the air. I won't be servicing this thread anymore, but I felt it important to see if any other reporters are getting high readings. I thought maybe driggs was malfunctioning but it checked out fine.

I took the instrument and went for a 100+ mile road trip tonight taking 30 minute surveys at 4 different locations around Idaho and Montana. Fast response meter setting gives us temporal resolution and was pushing 400+ CPM and as I said, locked alarm 3 times so far.

The mobile surveys were done in locations outside of urban areas and away from likely sources of signal interference. The breadth of the data collected also indicated that it's not normal background floor.

Each survey was concluded with me closing the beta window and confirming that little (~10 CPM) was actual Gamma emissions.

If you have high readings / alarm conditions, get your equipment on-air to ustream if possible and we can cross-promote the live feeds.

Feel free to post here or in a new thread, but I still will not be maintaining this thread here, other than to look for correlating reports to confirm my readings.

For the first time in 30+ pages of posts, I am admitting that I am taking personal precautions for this newly measured data. Several locations were averaging 250-400 CPM and it appeared that the wind did in fact play a small but notable role.

Good luck friends. Be well, and be safe. I will lurk in the ustream channel but won't always be there to chat, so it will be hit or miss. If you are an asshat in the ustream chat, you'll be banned without warning.

The transport mechanism from Asia to the US is somewhere between 'Complex' and 'Chaotic', in the technical sense of the words. For one to get some fallout in one's backyard a whole lot of things have to work out just right.
* There has to be a significant amount of airborne particulate matter ejected from the source –
* at the same time as there is an unstable, convective atmosphere to loft that matter to high altitude –
* and then the upper-level winds have to more-or-less randomly carry it over your backyard, where –
* there have to be the right conditions for the matter to drop out of suspension.

I guess right now it's a very random process.

My Teppa-n (Russian version but just like yours) does that too a few times a year. Suddenly it goes high and alarms and then usually goes into a rest mode and it goes right back down to normal. I am not sure if it gets hit by real radiation from space, some big atomic particle nearby splits, or if the aliens are just taking a flash picture :D It might also be some weird quirk in the unit's software or detector. But I would call that "normal" whatever it is so don't worry. If it stays high for an hour then worry but those sudden short bursts happen to mine here too. I knew of an older detector unit that did that too but that was 30 years ago before they had software.

I Googled a bit and Gamma-Ray-Bursts seem like a possibility:

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

[link to www.springerlink.com]

[link to www.riken.go.jp]

"...On July 2, 1967, while monitoring nuclear weapons testing, the U.S. satellite Vela suddenly detected intense gamma rays. This finding must have caused its observers some alarm, since the time was the era of the cold war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. However, the source of the gamma rays did not lie on the Earth, but in outer space.
"This was the first observation of a gamma-ray burst," explained Dr. Makishima...."

This has happened to me long before the Fucushima thing so it is not that.

Have you ever walked around your house with the Geiger counter just to see what radio sources you have laying about? Old Fiesta Ware™, high-index glass items, radium painted antique collectibles, etc. Might be entertaining if you get bored.

I have a new Oak table and the wood is about 4 uSv/h high. The smoke detectors are nice for testing the monitor. A hepa air filter was also oddly quite high at 30 uSv/h but was not operated until recently so it must have inhailed something in the past.

If you are careful you can see small added radiation from table salt, Potassium Iodide tablets :), and bananas. But most things are pretty dead as far as radiation goes.

Apparently Granite counter tops might be a little hot too in some cases. I saw a UTube of some guy walking around a cemmatary testing tomb stones and finding many were a tiny bit hot.

Here is a lady in Germany that really like to play with radiation things! Lots of fascinating videos from her!
