emerald eye Keeping an "eye out" for the truth. My alarm went off, and for a few seconds I was reading .52 uSV/h. Quoting: emerald eyeThen over the next 15-20 seconds it went back down to .13 which has been the baseline today. I have no explanation what-so-ever for this event, but I can tell you that it freaked me out a bit. Everything seems fine now. I didn't even know that this unit had an alarm until tonight. My Teppa-n (Russian version but just like yours) does that too a few times a year. Suddenly it goes high and alarms and then usually goes into a rest mode and it goes right back down to normal. I am not sure if it gets hit by real radiation from space, some big atomic particle nearby splits, or if the aliens are just taking a flash picture :D It might also be some weird quirk in the unit's software or detector. But I would call that "normal" whatever it is so don't worry. If it stays high for an hour then worry but those sudden short bursts happen to mine here too. I knew of an older detector unit that did that too but that was 30 years ago before they had software. I Googled a bit and Gamma-Ray-Bursts seem like a possibility: [link to en.wikipedia.org] [link to www.springerlink.com] [link to www.riken.go.jp] "...On July 2, 1967, while monitoring nuclear weapons testing, the U.S. satellite Vela suddenly detected intense gamma rays. This finding must have caused its observers some alarm, since the time was the era of the cold war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. However, the source of the gamma rays did not lie on the Earth, but in outer space. "This was the first observation of a gamma-ray burst," explained Dr. Makishima...." This has happened to me long before the Fucushima thing so it is not that. Have you ever walked around your house with the Geiger counter just to see what radio sources you have laying about? Old Fiesta Ware™, high-index glass items, radium painted antique collectibles, etc. Might be entertaining if you get bored. Quoting: Nuke SkywalkerI [link to www.youtube.com] Thanks for the input. What you said about the gamma ray burst makes a lot of sense to me. I'll bet that you are correct. Courage forges a path through all obstacles, while fear is the obstruction of all dreams. The only way that anyone gets something for nothing, is that someone else has given up something for nothing. |

It does the very basics at this point; listens to your Geiger counter and does short term rates and longer term (3-minute, 5-, and 10-) averages. Still to implement, after everything in the present configuration works OK: * data logging * whoop-whoop alarm * analog meter simulation * fancier menus |

Is it open source? Quoting: ProgrammerYes, it's open source. I'm still trying to divine which license applies, as it's developed with Netbeans (Sun/Oracle) and includes some of their library code, and of course may run under the Sun/Oracle JVM. But any way it works out, it'll be essentially open source. Now have data logging working, and a working alarm pop-up window. Tomorrow I put in the sound player. Now lots of multi-threading going on which makes synchronizing components kinda challenging. (What happens when one changes a preference while a thread that's using it is mid-run? Etc.) But still below the noise level. I was trying some food testing today: [link to team-titanium.com] Try back since that server is on a problem DSL line... After looking hard at the labels... Those grapes were still on the vine in 'Chile' 24 hours ago. =:O :D I cover the meter with Saran Wrap so if won't get messed up from rain or gooey food things. But I am going to start testing for radioactive food. The house carbon filters here trap any I-131. If any gets to them it will probably be all decayed before I pull the filters next... Radiation...
