Yes, I imagine that the manufacturers are working overtime to fill orders. Anonymous Coward User ID: 568981 United States 03/15/2011 10:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I seem to remember from a friend who continues to monitor the Three Mile Island area that under 130 cpm is considered OK, and normal. Daily readings can fluctuate from the 20's to the 80's and no one has concern . Anyone? Is this correct? |

Programmer (OP) User ID: 1105850 United States 03/15/2011 02:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Determining radiation equipment needs is complex. Consideration needs to be given to the following elements: • Application: “Detection” versus “measurement” of radiation • The Role, experience and knowledge of the user at an accident • Experience and knowledge of the user • Information required: Contamination or radiation measurements • Size, weight and portability of instruments • Cost and durability of instrument • Operating environment: Temperature, moisture, vibration, shock, altitude • Energy, type and level of radiation being measured • Sensitivity and accuracy required • Calibration and repair costs This Colorado state document (PDF) is a short primer on types of detectors, meters and their differences. [link to www.cdphe.state.co.us] It's only 4 pages and worth a quick read if you don't know the difference between a detector, a ratemeter, dosimeter, etc. Source: Bill Craig, Utah Division of Radiation Control, Salt Lake City, Utah Last Edited by Programmer on 03/15/2011 03:03 PM |
Programmer (OP) User ID: 1105850 United States 03/15/2011 03:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Edit: It appears as though one needs authentication credentials to access the BSRN data archives, essentially rendering the BSRN useless to our need / purpose of this thread. I will keep looking for unregulated access to their data and will update this post if I am successful. Last Edited by Programmer on 03/16/2011 06:44 AM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1298095 United States 03/15/2011 06:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am hoping that someone will start a radiation monitoring thread. I thought about it, but I work all day and could not maintain one. Quoting: JohntarazIf there is fallout traveling across the pacific ocean right now it is predicted to reach the US in 10-11 days. I don't feel we should trust the authorities to provide us with timely acurrate data on this. The thread would have to be monitored to prevent people from posting bogus readings and trying to cause fear. Posts could be requested to have a link to their source. I really hope that someone can do this, I am concerned that if these reactors keep failing and there is a true meltdown, the levels of fallout might become enough to impact the health of persons in the US. I just posted this^^^ on a couple of the nuclear doom threads. You are awesome. I hope you will weed out the false reports. I ordered a geiger counter on Friday so I will join the reporting when it arrives. Thanks man. JT in Oregon 5 stars :hoorayfireworks: Thank you, it will be good to have you join in, especially from Oregon. You'll be very helpful. As far as false reports, there really is no way to weed them out without 2nd or 3rd party validation. I suppose we could provide a link to a sanitized photo of our calibration cert. if a reading comes under scrutiny. are the rad detection cards of any value? I mean do they work well or at all? the ones that are the shape and size of a credit card. not familiar with them at all as of yet. |

I also noticed one Tokyo detector up 50% since yesterday and another up almost 100%. Quoting: Doominator 162364What is the model number? I only am aware of a NukAlert device that is made for immediate, acute radioactive conditions. Is your device in audible alert? |
