Actually, FWIW, Astronut seems more level-headed than Dr. Kaku. Just sayin'. Kaku is like the expert-for-hire on everything, but he seems more a "personality" than a scientist to me. Just have Dr. in front or PhD behind doesn't necessarily mean much. I work in education--trust me, I know.

exactly. expert-for-hire. expert on everything apparently.

Dudes, take a look at the plant after today's explosion, don't forget to click on the picture for a bigger image, then again, to see the details.

The destruction today was far greater than that we've been told.

Some of Japan;s nuclear fuel rods 'appear' to be melting

TOKYO — Japanese officials said Monday that the nuclear fuel rods appear to be melting inside all three of the most troubled nuclear reactors.

The earthquake and tsunami damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Monday was damaged by a hydrogen explosion.

The earthquake and tsunami damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Monday was damaged by a hydrogen explosion.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Monday: "Although we cannot directly check it, it's highly likely happening."

Some experts would consider that a partial meltdown of the reactor. Others, though, reserve that term for times when nuclear fuel melts through a reactor's innermost chamber but not through the outer containment shell.

My brother has a PhD and he is in Who's Who.

He scammed his college scholarship to a prestigious college.

No one wanted to admit the error.

He retired from another prestigious college, which is a pathetic degree-mill for the "elite".

Elite? bsflag

My step-grandfather was a nuclear facility plant manager. He was a ignorant bureaucrat.

It isn't so difficult to be intelligent. However, honesty is a requirement.

The temperature, and the isotopes present in the atmosphere, tell the facts: satellite thermo-imagry can provide the temperature.

4,000-degrees is required for meltdown for the 6" stainless steel reactor core.

Actually, anti-oxidants help.

Take high-quality antioxidants, all kinds, and natural juice.

In other words, treat yourself as if you had the flu.

I got 127 roentgens from the 1999 Japanese nuclear plant "accident". I was at Point Reyes. Now, I am in Montana.

Now, I am up to 137 roentgens cumulative.

CNN reporters are bozo's and bimbo's! Just had a weather guy trying to explain what is going on with the reactors in Japan using diagram that looks like it was made by a child! These people are such idiots! They now have a chief nuclear officer guy on trying to assure the US public that everything is fine because the Nuclear Regulatory Agency has had a fine record of safety and security when it comes to plants in the US. The US public can be assured, he says. What utter bullcrap!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1295922

Ha NRC is a farce. I worked at a nuke plant and the NRC was there for inspection the reactor was 90 percent online, they made us shut down and go offline; let me tell you all hell broke loose. We had an SI (safety injection) which is what they have been attempting in Japan this is measures to stop melt down. They vented steam and all (they had guys in monkey suits check RAD levels, of course they said everything A_OK) This MAJOR event never even made the LOCAL news much less national news. That was commanche peak plant Glen Rose TX circa the summer of 1989 I have searched high and low for anything written on it. Let me tell you those Nuke engineers were shittin their britches!!!!

The below is from www.nirs.org -- the reactor #3 at Daiichi is loaded with MOx - mixed oxide plutonium - fuel - meaning it has a sizeable percentage of plutonium molecules, a single one of which can induce lung cancer if inhaled.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1296017

A single cosmic ray can cause cancer if it hits just the right cell in just the right way. Doesn't mean it will and nearly all of the time it doesn't, we get hit with cosmic rays without realizing it all the time, but sometimes it will cause cancer.

For what it's worth,
"As a note, for inhalation (the exposure of highest risk), breathing in 5,000 respirable plutonium particles of
about 3 microns each is estimated to increase an individual’s risk of incurring a fatal cancer about 1% above the U.S. average."
[link to www.evs.anl.gov]

1% increased risk from 5,000 particles of 3 microns each doesn't sound like the end of all of humanity even in the worst case scenario. Not saying this isn't extremely bad, and if the worst case scenario occurs some people will get lung cancer and die, but unless I'm missing something here or the data on plutonium health risks is completely faked, it won't wipe out humanity either.
 Quoting: Astronut

boa man get the fuck off!! you suck , now you even fuckin with nuke doom!

Don't you want to know the truth? I know I do. Perhaps you missed this part:

"Not saying this isn't extremely bad, and if the worst case scenario occurs some people will get lung cancer and die"

My doom meter is still pretty high on this, as doom stories go. Nuclear meltdown is a nasty thing and plutonium inhalation is still extremely bad if the levels are high enough.

I wonder how effective chelation therapy is for inhaled plutonium, or is that pointless if it's inhaled instead of ingested?
 Quoting: Astronut

No sorry I didnt miss this intersting part. to be honest I never miss any interesting shit you write.

But I watch the situation very closely myself. dont need your opinion on it. Iam just sick of your selfish arrogant comments on everything. Maybe you can impress some kids here who believe in every shit thats on youtube. But man iam looking far beyond this and I know one thing for sure: You know a lot but you give way to much credit to statistics and science!

An more worse is you use it to back up all your shit you post. you are maybe not intelligent enough for that.

But if you have a TV , maybe next to your telescope where you watch the gay "yea people we are in space and its so exciting to look for planets and shit" space shuttle, turn it on and watch the news! And stop saying what will happen, because you dont know yet!!!

I did not say what would happen, I did say what wouldn't happen; small amounts of plutonium inhalation are not deadly for most people, but as a group will increase their chance of lung cancer. All told it would kill some percentage of them dependent on the dose.

Re: WARNING: FUKUSHIMA 3 facing meltdown, official now
Thorium as a cheap and safe alternative to uranium or plutonium as nuclear fuel:

SELECTED EXTRACTS

Thorium offers some other important aspects, it does not require isotope separation, the process of separating the desired reactable forms of uranium and plutonium from the decayed ore, a big cost saving. Weapons made from thorium are impractical.

Another thorium reactor opportunity is thorium consumes its own hazardous waste. It can even scavenge the plutonium left by uranium reactors, acting as an eco-cleaner. Kirk Sorensen, a former NASA rocket engineer, now chief nuclear technologist at Teledyne Brown Engineering, and closely watched Internet commentator and educator says, “It’s the Big One, once you start looking more closely, it blows your mind away. You can run civilization on thorium for hundreds of thousands of years, and it’s essentially free. You don’t have to deal with uranium cartels.” He’s right; thorium is so common that miners treat it as a nuisance, a radioactive by-product when they dig up rare earth metals. The U.S. and Australia are full of the stuff. So are the granite rocks of Cornwall in the UK. Some beaches in India are loaded with thorium. Not so much mining is needed: all thorium is potentially usable as fuel, compared to just 0.7% from uranium as much of the uranium has already decayed.U.S. scientists knew in the late 1940s that thorium was a high potential fuel, but weapons priorities pushed uranium and plutonium to the front. Yet by the early 1970s thorium research had produced a highly workable, safe and low cost reactor design that the U.S. put on the shelf. Uranium industry competition with thorium won the struggle for research and development funding.

No other on Earth energy source exists at the volumes that thorium offers. Not uranium, oil, gas, coal or other fuel can compare. The assorted reactor designs all offer a weapon free design, some could use the spent uranium fuel on hand now and extract its energy as well as destroy the uranium’s potential as a weapon or a pollutant, safety concerns are reduced to decades instead of centuries, and the construction costs and operating expenses with a cheap fuel are intensely motivating to power producers and ratepayers. The issue isn’t about the science, thorium reactors have already ran successfully, its people who have to become informed and apply the pressure needed to overcome the special interests in the political arena where the regulatory barrier has the potential of thorium corralled and stopped. It’s your planet, economy and family – can we all stay uninformed, silent and bleeding our financial resources for the benefit of the special interests only because we don’t know? Nope – now you know.

Have 24 hours to avoid disaster or its gonna get critical Japan and the world holds its breath.

Monday afternoon, Japanese authorities said that they have
asked for help from the international nuclear agency, IAEA.

U.S. has also been asked to contribute their expertise in this area.

The Japanese nuclear engineer Masashi Goto said a few hours ago that the next 24 hours will be crucial if one manages to avoid a complete meltdown of this reactor.

If that happens, along with a blast, plutonium can be spread over an area twice the size of a conventional nuclear explosion. This is because, according to Goto that these reactors using mixed oxide fuel.

The Japanese expert believes that an explosion at one of these plants will be worse for the population, than if the same happened in a facility that uses ordinary nuclear fuel.

A major explosion has indeed ripped apart Reactor # 3 at the Fukushima Nuclear complex today, releasing a mushroom shaped cloud rising up into the atmosphere. While video from youtube from NHK and Al Jazeera is showing the extent of this explosion, CNN is still looping the video from Reuters of Saturday's explosion at Reactor # 1.

Let's Pray for the best yet prepare for the worst, getting a supply of Potassium Iodide, or even kelp (seaweed) can provide the protection needed to spare our thyroid glands from radioactive iodine if a worst case scenario comes to pass.

Agree philosophically with Astronut here: this is a good situation for the application of statistics in predicting the outcome of a given level of fallout emissions.

However, statistics is less comprehensive in divining what is really going on in the units, and in predicting what will happen next. We have too few facts and there are possible incentives for certain people to lie -- which does not mean they will lie. There is no substitute for an understanding of the physics at work but that isn't enough either.

What kind of explosion is meant? A steam explosion with groundwater, or a nuclear fission explosion like a bomb?

This guy says the latter is impossible even with plutonium fuel.
[link to www-formal.stanford.edu]

"Q. Can a nuclear plant blow up like a bomb?
A. No. A bomb converts a large part of its U-235 or plutonium into fission fragments in about 10^-8 seconds and then flies apart. This depends on the fact that a bomb is a very compact object, so the neutrons don't have far to go to hit another fissionable atom. A power plant is much too big to convert an important part of its fissionable material before it has generated enough heat to fly apart. This fact is based on the fundamental physics of how fast fission neutrons travel. Therefore, it doesn't depend on the particular design of the plant."

70 percent risk of aftershocks by 7 in strength by Thursday, according to Japanese authorities
the earthquakes will continue for months

The risk of new tsunamis is thus quite real. People in Japan are now in progress an extensive hoarding of goods outside the affected areas. The situation is chaotic with long queues , especially gasoline and bottled drinking water is greatly lacking.

Hundreds of aftershocks .There have already been hundreds of aftershocks, several of magnitude between six and seven, said geophysicist Odleiv Olesen at the Geological Survey , to Dagbladet.

These quakes will not go down anytime soon. Geophysicist think the Japanese have to rely on the aftershocks for weeks to come.

There will definitely be aftershocks for a long time after this, in the weeks and months. Ground sheets must now be adjusted to new positions. In total, they moved about ten yards along a length of several hundred kilometers, "says Olesen.
