Astronut Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 634208 United States 03/14/2011 04:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | thats not a comet thats planet. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1294792A pretty big one too! That's extremely typical for a comet. "Comets can typically display a coma several thousand kilometers in diameter, with the size being dependent on the comet's distance from the sun and the size of the nucleus." [link to cometography.com] "The nuclear regions [note, they're talking about the physical nucleus, not the apparent nucleus] is perhaps only 10-50 kilometers across, but can produce a 'coma' larger than the diameter of the Sun. The above telescopic view of Comet Hale-Bopp in 1999 shows a coma size that is equal to the diameter of the Sun!" [link to www.astronomycafe.net] It's still an extremely dim object because the cometary coma is extremely low in density compared to a planet's atmosphere. There isn't much mass for light to reflect off of. If the outgassing increases or if the comet gets closer then earth will receive more reflected light from the comet and it will reach a naked eye magnitude. Elenin should reach that magnitude largely thanks to the latter. |

zacksavage User ID: 1068416 United States 03/14/2011 04:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | NO. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 836250It says: Diam. coma +/- 0.18' soit pour 2.94UA +/- 27938 km Translation: Coma diameter is about 0.18 arcseconds of angle, at a distance of 2.94 AU, plus or minus 27938 kms. Let's do some math: 1 AU = 149,597,870.7 km Source: [link to en.wikipedia.org] So, 2.94 AU = 439,817,740 KM +/- 27,938 kms means: It could be as close as: 439 789 802 It could be as far away as: 439 845 678 This is a margin of error of 0.000549056745, or 1/20th of one percent. Let's run those three distances through this calculator: [link to www.1728.com] Enter angle in seconds (0.18) And these three distances: Near: 439,789,802 Midpoint: 439,817,740 Far: 439,845,678 Yields the following diameters: High estimate: 383.79 km Mid estimate: 383.81 km Low estimate: 383.84 km So the error contained in the distance measurement only changes the calculated diameter of the COMA by 1km. Thus, it all depends on the angular measurement, and yes, we do have machines on this planet that can measure a fraction of a second of an angle. Note also this is the size of the COMA fer fexxsakes. Okay,...so like 280 something miles. That is different than 30 miles. Which is it? ***edit*** Oh,...Nevermind, I do not think anyone really knows. I think it is all conjecture. Thanks for the math btw. Z Last Edited by zacksavage on 03/14/2011 04:27 PM Free your mind,...your ass will follow. --- parliament funkadelic |

Quoting: zacksavageThat is different than 30 miles. Which is it? Doesn't matter. It's roughly 280 miles, which is a small coma. The coma is not the nucleus.
