* The unit of measurement is applied to calculate the biological effects of radiation type or different. For doses in humans, commonly used measurement is millisieverts (mSv), or one thousandth of Sievert.

* Head of the Japanese Government spokesman Yukio Edano said radiation levels near the reactor that exploded to 400 millisieverts (mSv) per hour, or thousands of times higher than before the explosion. But then, this number is corrected value becomes lower. Radiation levels of 400 mSv is equivalent to 20 times per year of exposure experienced by workers in nuclear reactors or uranium mines.

* Exposure to 350 mSv is the criteria or conditions used in the World Nuclear Association to relocate the residents after the Chernobyl explosion.

* Any natural person may be exposed to radiation of about 2 mSv per year.

* The procedures for the use of X-ray beam on the chest of patients presenting 0:02 mSv, whereas in the teeth just reach mSv 00:01

* Crew of aircraft assigned to the New York-Tokyo route could be exposed to 9 mSv per year.

* Exposure to radiation sebasar 100 mSv is the lowest level that can increase the risk of cancer. Cumulative exposure of 1.000 mSv likely to cause fatal cancer after a period of many years in 5 of 100 people exposed to radiation.

* The dose of 1,000 mSv exposure can cause immediate effects such as nausea but does not cause death. Dose of 5,000 mSv bsia cause death within a month interval in 50 percent of people exposed to radiation.

Generally, exposure to 100 mSv a year is the lowest level at which any increase in cancer risk is clearly evident-according to current understanding-but even a smaller amount could precipitate it causing disease...likewise one can be exposed much higher and not be as badly affected-ones immune system strength is part of resistance even in radioactive assault.

""Decontamination is very simple," says Dr. Eric Toner of the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Biosecurity, who has studied what might happen in the wake of a terrorist's "dirty bomb" attack.

Dry air, when dust gets kicked up in the air and disbursed over longer distances, is bad.

By the way, the dusty clothes can often be decontaminated simply by washing them, but it depends on the amount of radiation detected. "If you have reason to think they're heavily contaminated, they should be disposed of properly," Toner says. That means put in a plastic bag and, if possible, taking them to authorities for disposal."

The changes to the 1992 PAGs are not a new attempt by the EPA. The agency attempted similar changes in 2009 but the revisions were stopped largely by a barrage of FOIA requests and a lawsuit filed by PEER. However, in 2009 there was no massive radiation disaster the EPA needed to cover up as there is at the current time. In 2009, the EPA could afford to back off, regroup, and try again at a later date. Unfortunately, it is not likely to react the same way this time around."

The lawsuit filed Wednesday by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility under the Freedom of Information Act claims that the agency "wrongfully withheld" comments submitted by EPA and other federal and state agency officials and by representatives of private corporations or trade associations to the EPA Office of Radiation and Indoor Air as it prepared its updated Protective Action Guides.

The radiation guides are protocols for responding to incidents ranging from nuclear power plant accidents to transportation spills to dirty bombs.

"The new draft standards have been promulgated in secrecy despite sharp controversy about allowing public exposure to radiation levels vastly higher than those EPA had previously deemed unacceptably dangerous," claims PEER, a national nonprofit alliance of resource professionals employed by government agencies at the local, state and federal levels.

"EPA has bypassed open dialogue on how much radiation the public will be allowed to receive in the event of a release, and is now suppressing evidence of internal dissent on these controversial proposals," said PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch."

Like the APHIS 2002 plan to kill birds, they kept secret-and now they are-and then this 2009 plan to increase cancer risk...disgusting!!!

The reality is with the volume released and the continuing problems in Japan...there is very little protection one can find-
