Has anyone tried Diatomaceous Earth?

I have a few questions about this product and was hoping maybe some of you could clear it up.

My first question is about the claim that it gets rid of bacteria and other small organisms throughout your digestive tract. If it truly does this then wouldn't it mean it kills the good bacteria as well, the bacteria that greatly aids in digestion among other things?

My next question is if the product is actually safe? I saw some people saying that it should not be inhaled or it could cause some internal bleeding. I wonder long term what this product could do to the inside of the delicate parts of your digestive tract such as your intestines and the villi in them that helps in absorbing nutrients.

These are my main concerns with the item and I hope you can shed some light onto this for me.

1) Food grade diatomaceous earth has excellent health benefits for humans. Taken daily, it helps eliminate all intestinal worms and parasites from the body and keeps the bowels clean. Food grade DE is also known to sweep some bacteria out of the system, but DE does NOT kill the beneficial bacteria in the gut.


2)Common sense goes a long way.

I'm re-reading this thread, and checked out the link you posted. I love the fact that it kills heartworms, also! I always worry my dogs are being over medicated with the vaccines, flea killers, and heartworm pills.I can't wait to get them on this!

Do not inhale product. Dust may cause eye and respiratory irritation. Keep out of reach of children. Once you start worming with DE, remember to feed EVERY day. If you start one day and skip a few days, the build up of dead dying worms can create disease.

Thanks for the answers, however they are not really helpful or informative and come off as somewhat condescending.

My first question, you just reiterated what others have said and added that "good" bacteria will remain unharmed. However it seems suspicious that only the "bad" bacteria would be selected and taken away.

In reference to my second question you said common sense would help. However asking how a substance that supposedly only takes away harmful things could possibly have some negative side effects doesn't seem to fit in the realm of commons sense. I was hoping you could refer me to a study (if there are any on this substance) or possibly to some anecdotal evidence from long term use.

Don't get me wrong I am not trying to say this product doesn't work, it just seems that a lot of people are taking this product without any real knowledge of negative affects or counter indications; all the information seems to be from testimonials without any other kind of backing.

I do believe in homeopathic medicines and other lesser known substances for healing (though it could be widely debated that many things work from mind over matter.)

I am merely trying to get more information on a product that could be beneficial to my health. Some background information on me, I am an EMT and work at a bacterial lab as a tech. (not saying that means a lot, however I am familiar with microbiology and the human anatomy.)

Good questions and good points. I don't have the answers. Wish I did. I have taken Diatomaceous earth for some time and I believe it is very good. But that's not worth much.

I've used it for ants, slugs, snails and mites (dust onto roses), but never taken it internally. How much per day are you folks taking?

I first took a tablespoon and it was quite a jolt to the gut, cleaned me out lol. Since then i take about a healthy teaspoon in water each day and it keeps me regular for sure. If anyone has problems staying regular this will get you on a schedule daily. I also start each day with 20 oz of water on an empty stomach and wait a half hour before i eat. This also keeps you regular and supposedly has other health benefits, look it up , some kind of japanese health thing. I do feel better but i'm not sure the diato earth does more than clean you out. It is used as a duster for fleas on dogs, cuts into the waxy shell of the eggs. DO NOT USE ANYTHING BUT FOOD GRADE, THE POOL STUFF IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND NOT MADE TO EAT. AND AVOID BREATHING THE DUST. Sorry just wanted to make sure people know.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come across as condescending, just matter of fact. I meant "common sense' literally. There is enough information on line stating to be careful with getting the powder into our lungs. One site I read from said it wasn't a concern. Again, for me, common sense would reign. I tend to be on the safe side when trying something new.

Just a suggestion, spend some time doing your own research, there is information out there, and yes, some studies. But, I tend to listen to others' experiences, sometimes with a grain of salt, but sometimes some things stand out.
Myself, I have Nueropathy (nerve damage similar to MS)Fibromyalgia, and bone disease. I have seen tremeendous changes in my own health using several alternative therapies that many people scoff at. The FDA has been after Jum Humble, even arrested Hulda Clark, amongst other pioneers, but their treatments do work, at least for me, and have never made me ill, only better. I've gone from being bedbound and sick all the time to being active, cooking again, cleaning my home, caring for my animals, being able to walk again with a cane, then walking short distances without the cane. I used to be able to only exercise about ten minutes without exhaustion and great pain in my legs to an hour+ a day. I have acsess to medical doctors, but haven't been to my family doctor in over two years. I was at one time taking handfuls of pills all day, feeling like a zombie, and now take two, three times a day, with the hopes that I can eventually get off of these. I am on my own personal journey of Healing. I posted earlier to Krist that I ordered this product, it hasn't arrived yet. But I have a good feeling I will see positive results for myself, and even my animals. I have being reading about this before Krist even made this thread, and since then, since it is on it's way. Is it a miracle product?? I doubr it, no more than MMS is. But then again, what do we consider miracles, when our health improves, immun sysyems begin to heal?

Wow, this is a very interesting thread. But I have a need to add my two cents.

BEWARE of taking DE internally, especially if you have MS!

Google "parasite therapy" and learn why undeveloped nations have virtually NO allergies, or autoimmune diseases, including MS! It's because of a lack of parasites in developed nations. That is what scientific research has shown and is becoming generally accepted by the medical and scientific community.

I would say that anything that kills all parasites should be used with great caution and DUE DILIGENCE and anyone who claims it is healthy should be very careful.

With that said, it seems that anyone who disagrees with the status quo here is attacked and insulted. That not nice. :0

meant to say that undeveloped nations differ from developed ones in that they have parasites that live naturally in their bodies. We in developed nations live much more antiseptically and thus our immune systems don't work properly. Our immune systems protect those with parasites from autoimmune diseases, and don't do such a good job when parasites are lacking.

I started taking Food Grade DE 4 days ago. I had very high expectations, but so far not so good. I'm wondering if others have felt awful afterwards? I am experiencing aches all over and the occasional headache like I'm coming down with something; which I may be.

Anyone who has been there please comment on your experience the first few days.

Heaping tablespoon stirred in water in the morning and the evening for 8 days now.

No significant changes. I assume I had no problems start up since the last maintenance period.

After 30 days, which is the standard preventive and corrective maintenance period, I'll stop for 6 months.

Then I'll compare how I feel and perform.

It IS NOT supposed to be taken internally. But it's GREAT for killing fleas and such around your house.

You've been taking DE internally your whole life. It is added to ALL grains in storage to reduce the extoskeletal insect population. Farmers have been doing this for over 400 years.

It is called fossil shell flour for a reason.
