Re: Additional Iodine sources
Povidone-Iodine "Betadine" is just as good.

Studys were done on it. [link to www.ki4u.com]

$6 a bottle at walmart for equate brand. Just face it that pills will be very hard to find/buy right now.

I live in Nevada, I have my povidone-iodine ready!
Also It probably wouldn't hurt to help saturate your body right now with more iodine supplements from kelp, seafood ect. No it wont help with SHTF, but if taken over a 10 day period it help maybe 5-10% along with full strength dose of iodine
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1298216

Just be sure you do NOT ingest betadine. It is to be rubbed on the skin.

Only 8ml ( a little less than 2 teaspoons) for an adult dose.

Re: Additional Iodine sources
You people need to EDUCATE yourself.
This is OLD NEWS but will answer ALL your
questions before you waste precious time or money.

Iodine is useless for protecting your thyroid, you need KI. (Potassium Iodate)

a couple of sources are listed in my post here:

[link to www.ronpaulforums.com]

another is: [link to beprepared.com]

As to getting it locally, your best bet is a chemical supply house, if you have one in the area. Sometimes surplus stores carry it and in some areas there are survival stores.

If you get the raw chemical, instructions on how to prep the solution and take it are in the chapter I pointed to in the article on protecting your thyroid in the above post.

As to mail order chem supply places, see my blog post. Note that elemental can take months to ship.

[link to www.ronpaulforums.com]

There are other chem supply houses - google them. Some will not sell to the public.

IOSAT (one of the brand names for KI) is available via mail order at least from CVS. Local drug stores probably don't have it, but worth a call. Just ask for the right thing.

[link to www.cvs.com]

Amazon is sold out but has other KI products:
[link to www.amazon.com]

It looks like a lot of people are thinking the same thing as to getting some.

--------------------------

You can't take potassium iodide for months on end.

Ideally, buy potassium iodide now,
and monitor radiation levels by looking at real-time monitoring networks such as this and this.

Don't take iodide (at this strength) unless and until elevated radiation levels hit your area.

Whatever you do, don't take more than the recommended dosage.
The Centers for Disease Control and the FDA recommend:

* 130 milligrams for adults

* 65 milligrams for children

for each 24 hours that one is exposed to radiation.

Anything LESS is NOT going to protect you.

Potassium is also a concern to load up on, as the body is easily fooled by the cesium-137 and absorbs it to all parts of the body-not just the thyroid.

I have potassium iodide pills and have had them since 1998.
They protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine.

HOWEVER

these pills WILL NOT protect you from ANY OTHER
radioactive ions such as Strontium for example,
which cause bone cancer and luekemia and can be ingested with contaminated food or water.

So just be AWARE that there are many other radioactive
elements which are being released.

I have available to me (for a price) 2.5kg USP pure Potassium Iodide. I'm not a chemist, pharmacist, or whatever, but how would one take the pure stuff and dose it out? I'm not interested in profiteering, rather helping friends and family. Just don't want to OD anyone.

I just went to Walgreens in Colorado Springs for iodine tincture. They had two bottles left. She said there was a run on it today, and that she's had dozens and dozens of people coming in physically (and dozens more calling in) for potassium iodide.

Also stocked up on a ton of dried kelp and spirulina (which was used on kids in Chernobyl to GREAT effect) at the natural foods store.

Done all the time to disinfect questionable water. You can buy the iodine tablets in the camping section of Walmart and sporting goods stores. Iodine is iodine when your thyroid is exposed to it when it is in your bloodstream. If your thyroid needs it, it absobs it. Which is how iodine works to protect you against iodine 131. An iodine filled thyroid will not absorb any more iodine than it needs.

IF YOUR IODINE SENSITIVE too much iodine will kill you regardless of the source. Quite rare condition.

I take 1 drop of betadine with a full glass of water and a meal every day to get 2000 micrograms of iodine. Have for 2 years and MANY arthritis, metabolism and other problems vanished.

Health Effects of Strontium-90
How can strontium-90 affect people's health?

Strontium-90 is chemically similar to calcium, and tends to deposit in bone and blood-forming tissue (bone marrow). Thus, strontium-90 is referred to as a "bone seeker." Internal exposure to Sr-90 is linked to bone cancer, cancer of the soft tissue near the bone, and leukemia.

Risk of cancer increases with increased exposure to Sr-90. The risk depends on the concentration of Sr-90 in the environment, and on the exposure conditions.

The product that you want is IOSAT and the best price is directly from the company that manufactures it. www.anbex.com.

The company's website states that it is the only full-strength tablet for radiation blocking which may legally be sold in the US.

Good luck to you all.

Re: Additional Iodine sources
Look kelp, seafood, foods with iodine may help if you eat them every day and saturate your body with them, BUT ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH!!!!

It may only help you 5-10%.

If SHTF and a done of radioactive iodine is headed your way you will need to saturate your THYROID with a HIGH!!! dose of iodine.

Pills are your best bet, if you cant get pills a topical of providone-iodine "betadine" is your next and only choice.

Read this site fully, [link to www.ki4u.com] stop pretending kelp and iodine rich diet would save you, it WONT. Best it will do is pre-saturate your thyroid with 5-10% of iodine meaning you would need less from the pills or topical.

Lugol's iodine

Lugol's iodine, also known as Lugol's solution, first made in 1829, is a solution of elemental iodine and potassium iodide in water.

Lugol's solution consists of 5 g iodine (I2) and 10 g potassium iodide (KI) mixed with enough distilled water to make a brown solution with a total volume of 100 mL and a total iodine content of 150 mg/mL.
