Will Japan's nuclear disaster cause nuclear winter?
If the whole complex blows and dumps tons of radiation into the atmosphere, we may have to worry about meltdown generated nuclear winter.

"Nuclear winter is a predicted climatic effect of nuclear war. It has been theorized that severely cold weather and reduced sunlight for a period of months or even years could be caused by detonating large numbers of nuclear weapons, especially over flammable targets such as cities, where large amounts of smoke and soot would be ejected into the Earth's stratosphere.
Similar climatic effects can be caused by a comet or asteroid impact,[1][2] also sometimes termed an impact winter, or of a supervolcano eruption, known as a volcanic winter.[3]"

Forget global warming. We might have to worry about another (bad) ice age as a result of the meltdowns in Japan.

What's your stored food supply like? I might be a long, cold winter...!

There already has been a slight climate change, but the winter is due to multiple impacts, causing debis to blot out the sun. Nuclear winter is a term reserved for all out nuclear war "multiple detonations" I beleive....

Re: Will Japan's nuclear disaster cause nuclear winter?
There's a difference between having 100 nuke explosions vs one nuclear plant leaking radiation. The nuclear plant that leaks radiation does not clog the atmosphere with dust / smoke etc. It justs "pollutes" it. So no need to worry for nuclear winter, unless many nukes are detonated ...

Re: Will Japan's nuclear disaster cause nuclear winter?
In the midwest we are experiencing nuclear winter right now. It snows and rains most days with temperatures from the upper twenties to the mid -forties. We should be getting temps in the sixties by now April 18. The Fuka explosions while being quiet nuclear blasts (unlike a bomb) are lARGE, NUMEROUS, and continuous. They are still burning and emmitting residue. They are the equivalent of many bombs. So we are having nuclear winter which will probably make the summer colder and effect farming in the northern hemisphere. Of course, the food is already being poisoned--especially fish, water, and dairy from fallout.

This would have to be the most stupid, absurd thread I've ever read so far in this whole nuclear catastrophy. Get over it, FYI the world aint ending on the 21st of May either. You may have to wait until next year 2012 for your armageddon, that is if you are that stupid also

Yes it was snowing that time last year in Japan as it was the start of spring which is still cold and snowing over there. Japan recieves a lot of snow annually and it is not an event that (snowing at the reactor site) has been caused by the nuclear meltdown happening in Fukushima. The events happening at the nuclear plant are not going to affect the weather. You may have in countries other than Japan some very minute traces of radiation. It may be found in cows milk that eat contaminated grass or on your vegies, but outside of japan there will be very minute traces and won't harm you. All the hype about this thing is unbelievable, changing weather patterns, nuclear winter caused by it???? WTF seriously.

A RESOUNDING YES NAD NUKE RAIN EVERY RAIN STORM AND SOON AT A GROCERY STORE NEAR YOU NUKED FOOD.
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. †.
