hurricane IRENE
Well?
Iīm on the North East Coast and it STILL looks to me like this thing is headed for land.
Our lifeguards have recieved a warning for the week, the National Weather Service says that it will turn-around, and blow out to sea or Canada.
Any other opinions on this?

Re: hurricane IRENE
No, as far as I can tell, and I have been watching it since August 4th--it has not turned yet.
If you go to the national weather service tropical page, and click through to the archives, the "graphic" archives, you can watch the entire track of the storm in stop-motion.
From what I could tell, they said that it will turn during the next 48 hours.

thatīs the graphics page. If you hit the "stop" button, and then the 1 frame at a time, you can watch the track.
The "orange dot", is the actual hurricane, the bubble, is the prediction.

Prince Edward Island, and to a lesser extent, Cape Breton Island should better watch for land fall.

Look at this one (specifically).

Atlantic Satellite Loop
[link to www.kcra.com]

Notice how the storm looks like itīs turning
clockwise instead of counter-clockwise like hurricanes usually do?

Isnīt that ... I donīt know, different from normal motion?

Is the loop running in reverse or something?
Has my brain shorted out?

Re: hurricane IRENE
Thanks!---that KCRA loop looks like it shows the storm turning. It looks like the line of clouds is pushing it away.
Below is snipped from "Hurricane Hunters", the National Weather Service plane that flys into the eye. Yesterday, they flew into the eye, and cancelled todayīs mission. Why?

Re: hurricane IRENE
Probably no reason to keep going in if thereīs no threat to land, and itīs starting to break up so squalls might be unpredictable and dangerous for the planeīs crew.

OP, go back to your graphics page:

[link to www.nhc.noaa.gov]

Now advance the orange dot to frame 37.

Frame 38, itīs on 70W longitude line.

Frame 39, it moves just beyond it.

Frame 40 is where it starts reversing on Aug 14, 11 am.

Frame 41 it goes north a bit, along the 70W line.

Frames 42 & 43, itīs obviously turrned back by 11 pm last night.

See.
