jim70769 User ID: 1304749 United States 03/19/2011 07:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Water spraying goes on, return of power helps cool down reactor TOKYO, March 20, Kyodo Japanese authorities carried out an overnight mission Sunday of spraying water into crippled nuclear reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi plant, while an overheated pool at another reactor was cooled down thanks to the restoration of power supply. The Tokyo Fire Department shot water into a spent-fuel pool of the No. 3 reactor in an operation that lasted more than 13 hours until 3:40 a.m., while the Defense Ministry plans to shoot water into a similar pool of the No. 4 reactor shortly. More than 2,000 tons of water is believed to have been put into the No. 3 reactor's pool so far, exceeding the pool's capacity of 1,400 tons. Fuel rods used at the reactor were plutonium-uranium mixed oxide fuel, known as MOX, said to be harder to control than normal fuel rods made from uranium. The unmanned operation, using automated equipment, was first planned to last for seven hours but extended twice. The power plant which was hit hard by the March 11 powerful earthquake was on the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture about 220 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. At the No. 6 reactor, the cooling system was reactivated due to restoration of electricity supply and the temperature in an overheated spent-fuel pool dipped to 52 C at 3 a.m. Sunday from 67.5 C at 11 p.m. Saturday, according to the operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. Meanwhile, the company is set to restore electricity to the No. 1 and 2 reactor buildings as early as later Sunday to reactivate the cooling system for their spent-fuel pools. ==Kyodo |

That'll work, right? Quoting: pitcher332Worked with Chernobyl.......... Chernobyl was a uranium graphite pile, not a reactor in the sense of a high pressure steam generating reactor with a closed loop. Go to Wiki and read the article on the GE Mark One reactor. It was a very old design. I trained on the GE Pressurized Water Reactor that did not need pumps in the primary loop. That was in 1969 so the technology was there way back then. 1st Place in Novel Sales for 6 yrs! [link to www.mobipocket.com] |

Fishy6 User ID: 1303150 Netherlands 03/20/2011 12:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What people are not getting is at the worst wrecked reactors while shooting water at the spent rods may help with those, the rods in the reactor vessel is inside the containment structure, so shooting water on that structure wont do any good at all. If the pipes and valves are still intact they could hook up and fill them up, but I am not reading any reports of that. IMO the reactor rods inside the reactor vessel in the worst 2 reactors will probably end up totally melt down. We are just not hearing the whole story. Experts have already said if one reactor totally melts down the plant will be so radioactive they will have to abandon the entire facility. |
