Smoking doesn't cause cancer. It's the chemicals added to tobacco to make cigarettes more addictive that give you lung cancer! If you're going to smoke you should grow your own.

Sitting in an office room with a laser printer on one of
the desks is more dangerous than smoking, because of the fine dust particles coming from the printer.

I think there are tens of millions of people working in
such an environment.

If gov's would really be concerned about our health they
would ban laser printers, but they don't.

When ever the govt pushes for people not to do something - that should give people a heads up that it is actually GOOD FOR YOU!

I have always ignored the govt and all those who have said "Don't smoke"!

I ENJOY SMOKING AND NOW MAY BE ONE TO SURVIVE DUE TO MY SMOKING!

SO STICK IT UP YOUR BUTT - GOVT! HA! I will survive due to protecting my lungs by smoking!

I love winning!

I don't know if it has been said already at this thread but concerning Radon that is emitted from trace amonts of decay of trace amounts of Uranium that occurs naturally in many building materials and in the ground, this radioactive gas together with its decay daughter radionuclides is a risk factor for lung cancer.

The risk is substantially reduced to almost undetectable levels for non-smokers. So if the influence of Radon can be taken as a model for inhalation of other radioactive substances, it seems smoking will increase the cancer risk.

Here's an interesting article. According to this researcher, smoking cigarettes can help protect a person from getting cancer after exposed to radioactive fallout.

The article is long, but here is one snip from it:

" ... All mice and rats are used one-time-only in a specific experiment, and then destroyed. In this way researchers ensure that the results of whatever substance they are testing cannot be accidentally “contaminated” by the real or imagined effects of another substance. Then one day as if by magic, a few thousand mice from the smoking experiment “accidentally” found their way into the radioactive particle experiment, which in the past had killed every single one of its unfortunate test subjects. But this time, completely against the odds, sixty percent of the smoking mice survived exposure to the radioactive particles. The only variable was their prior exposure to copious quantities of tobacco smoke. ... "

Awesome thread.

I,m on a European tour atm and can add personal testament that is very compelling (for me anyway).

When I was in the Swiss Alps - the air was crisp and clean and unimpacted by pollution - I didnt cough up phlegm at all. It was quite weird actually. Only city so far. The blackness of my phlegm is a measure of the city´s pollution. I can say this for sure.

London was one of the worst. It was black. And awful.

My boogies were also pitch black.

I think the OP is spot on. Smokers are coughing up pollution. I have proved it.

Thanks for your personal testimony, AC.

I've had the same experience. I lived at the coast for a number of years, and my lungs were clear while breathing in the clean sea air. I would make a trip to the valley, and then cough up dirty air pollution for a day or two after returning to the coast.

Re: * * * Will Smoking Cigarettes Help Protect You Against Exposure To Radioactive Fallout? * * *
The tobacco leaves used in making cigarettes contain radioactive material, particularly lead-210 and polonium-210. The radionuclide content of tobacco leaves depends heavily on soil conditions and fertilizer use.

Soils that contain elevated radium lead to high radon gas emanations rising into the growing tobacco crop. Radon rapidly decays into a series of solid, highly radioactive metals (radon decay products). These metals cling to dust particles which in turn are collected by the sticky tobacco leaves. The sticky compound that seeps from the trichomes is not water soluble, so the particles do not wash off in the rain. There they stay, through curing process, cutting, and manufacture into cigarettes.Lead-210 and Polonium-210 can be absorbed into tobacco leaves directly from the soil. But more importantly, fine, sticky hairs (called trichomes) on both sides of tobacco leaves grab airborne radioactive particles.
For example, phosphate fertilizers, favored by the tobacco industry, contain radium and its decay products (including lead-210 and polonium-210). When phosphate fertilizer is spread on tobacco fields year after year, the concentration of lead-210 and polonium-210 in the soil rises.
 Quoting: Izaak

Actually both of these are also found in all the fruit and vegetables that you consume. These grow in errrm SOIL!!!

The phosphate based fertilizers, favoured by the tobacco industry, are strangely enough also favoured by the FOOD GROWING industry!

I love it when people talk about the 4,000 chemicals found in tobacco - that are also found in all fruit and vegetables too because - they are in the soil, added as fertilizer or insecticide!
