are you taking all that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1301841

No, most of the list is just in the event of significant amounts of radiation reaching my location or if a similar event was to happen closer to home. (Never say never, the Japanese probably thought their reactors were totally immune to problems.)lala

There is also evidence to support that radiation and other insults are more serious when the body is depleted of essential vitamins and minerals. For instance there is a study (from Japan) showing that those who have better iodine levels from seafood consumption require less KI to protect their thyroid gland in the event of a radiation emergency. (I'll try to find it and post a link)

I do take 5,000 Units of D3 a day,sun as well as a B vitamin complex and 1,000 mg of Vitamin C daily. I also take resveratrolwine and alpha lipoic acid for other health benefits. I eat a lot of miso soup and seaweed because I really like it. I have been taking spirulina for several weeks, and I think that it gives me more energy. My husband won't touch the stuff however unless there is a real need but we did purchase some additional Melatonin today, as he is taking no chances with his testicles.. gasp

The list is to allow those who are interested to purchase items in advance of a catastrophic event or global financial meltdown, when these products may not be so readily available.

I hope that you find the list and other contributions helpful, just in case.

Re: Decrease radiation illness potentially by using these common items.
Dear GLPers,

While we don't seem to know for certain what our possible risk from radiation exposure will be, wherever you live, being knowledgeable in advance allows one to make informed choices and decisions. While I do not think that anyone should panic, this list is supplied for those who wish to be proactive rather than counting on governmental institutions to have the interest of the common citizen as their first priority rather than damage control, protecting their own personal interests, or PR.

I composed the following list of dietary supplements that may be of benefit against various types of radiation, both as a prophylaxis and a treatment. This list was composed at the request of family members, but I thought I would share it with you.

There are references following the list, but in a few key instances, I have included the references with the supplement when I thought there might be greater interest. Full articles are available from pubmed for a fee, but the abstracts are posted as they are free.

Please be alert that doses for Adults and children may be radically different, and persons with health conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, or other serious medical conditions should always consult with their personal health care provider before using any supplements. Also if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss any supplements with your health care provider before using them.

If anyone wants to add anything else, feel free.

Protection from radiation summary:

Calcium - Blocks uptake of stronium-90. Adults may take 1500 mg daily.

Calcium iodate: -another effective blocker of radioiodine uptake by the thyroid gland. From the study listed below: "Ca(IO3)2 is permitted by the FDA as a food additive and is "generally regarded as safe" (GRAS, CFR No.1206). We have also compared the efficacy of Ca(IO3)2 with KIO3 in blocking thyroidal uptake of radioiodine, which could be important considering the better shelf life of Ca(IO3). The results of the present study provide us with evidence that Ca(IO3)2 can serve as another promising radioiodine blocker, and is as equipotent as KI/KIO3 in protecting the thyroid gland. We have not found any studies that examined the property of Ca(IO3)2 in blocking radioiodine uptake by the thyroid gland and the present study is an attempt in this direction."

Iron - Blocks the uptake of plutonium. Too much iron can be toxic, especially for children. Don't overdose on this one. Adults take up to 300 mg daily if no medical problems, and iron deficient children may receive 4 to 6 mg/kg elemental iron daily in 3 divided doses. A fatal dose for children could be as little as 600 mg so this is one to consult your pediatrician on.

Potassium - Reduces uptake of cesium-137. Adults may take up to 100 mg daily, unless they have decreased renal or kidney function. In that case, the dose should be decreased or avoided. Eating potassium rich foods, like meat broths is usually still OK, even with decreased renal function.

Zinc - Reduces uptake of radioactive zinc-65. The recommended dose is 100 mg per day in adults unless medical conditions prohibit.

Vitamin B12 - Suppresses the uptake of cobalt-60. Adults may take up to 9 mg a day. Doses as high as 40 mg daily have shown no adverse effects.

Chlorella - High in vitamin B12. Helps detoxify and get rid of heavy metals and other toxic elements etc. (some may be allergic, test for stomach upset).

Spirulina: 5 grams of spirulina a day for 45 days detoxifies radiation in both adults and children with little known harmful side effects and was used following the Chernobyl disaster .

Magnesium - Always take with other supplements to help with absorption. A good way to absorb magnesium is with an Epson salts bath or foot soak so that it does not cause GI upset.

Cod liver oil - For the Retinol, Vitamin D3, Omega 3 DHA/EPA etc. Helps fortify the body and prevent damage due to toxins etc. Adults may take up to 1-3 tablespoons daily.

Flaxseed oil: The protection afforded by flaxseed oil may be attributed to the constituents of the oil, which include omega-3 essential fatty acids and phytoestrogenic lignans, which appear to play an important role in free radical scavenging and singlet oxygen quenching. There is not an accepted dosage for flaxseed oil; doses ranging from 40 mg to 300 mg have been used daily in adults.

Potassium Iodide: Blocks uptake of radioactive Iodine 131. Adults 130 mg/day. Must start before or immediately upon exposure. Children between 3 -18 years of age should take one-half of a 130-mg tablet (65 mg). Children between 1 month and 3 years of age should take 1/4 of a 130-mg tablet (32 mg).Infants from birth to 1 month of age should be given 1/8 of a 130-mg tablet (16 mg). Women who are breastfeeding should take the adult dose, and their infants should receive the recommended infant dose. Children who are approaching adult size (greater than or equal to 150 pounds) should take the adult dose regardless of their age. Do not use unless you know that you are being exposed or about to be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.

Melatonin: Helps to protect from damage due to ionizing radiation. Adults may take up to 9 mg a day. Start before exposure. There is also evidence for protection of the testes from radiation in rats. (Stock up now guys!) [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Vitamin E: Studies have reported vitamin E to protect against some of the toxicities of ionizing radiation Adults may use 1,000-2,000 IU per day.

Vitamin C: Shows protective effect from ionizing radiation. 1,000-5000 mg daily may be taken by adults. Use caution if a history of kidney stones.

Vitamin D3: Boosts immune system, helping to prevent infections and is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Adults may safely take 2000-5000 IU daily.

Selenium: This is an anti-oxidant with activity as a free radical scavenger. Populations with high blood selenium levels are found to have lower death rates due to cancer. Selenium toxicity can occur and the dose of selenium should be close to 100 MICROGRAMS (not milligrams) per day in adults.

Garlic: Either several cloves raw, or 1000 mg daily for adults helps the immune system and garlic was also shown to protect mice from ionizing radiation by a Cobalt 60 source.

Turmeric or Curcumin: Found to be effective in protecting the cells against radiation-induced suppression of glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. This is used in many curry dishes, and may be safely ingested by adults and children. This is particularly important to use before exposure to protect the lymphocytes (blood cells).

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Aloe Vera: Helps to protect and heal skin from radiation burns.

Horseradish: is high in superoxide dismutase (SOD) which plays a role in radioprotective response by inhibiting the initiation of a superoxide anion-induced ROS cascade leading to enhanced mitochondrial and nuclear damages.

Resveratrol: Resveratrol is found in grapes and is potentially an effective protecting agent and was shown to be capable of alleviating gamma-ray radiation exposure. Grapes, grape juice or resveratrol supplements may be safely consumed by adults and children in recommended dosages as long as there is not an allergy.

Lycopene: Lycopene is found in tomatoes, and there is evidence that pretreatment with lycopene offers protection to normal lymphocytes against gamma-radiation-induced cellular damage. Tomato products may be safely consumed by adults and children as long as they are not allergic to them.

Alpha-lipoic acid: Is a nontoxic but effective radioprotector and it is reported that alpha-lipoic acid confers considerable radio-protective effect in mouse tissues when given prior to x-irradiation. It also helps to protect the neural tissue from radiation injury. Adults may safely consume 300 mg daily unless there is an allergy or medical problem.

Miso soup: "People who eat miso regularly may be up to five times more resistant to radiation than those who do not eat miso. That is the conclusion of a team of researchers at Hiroshima University’s atomic bomb radiation research center."

Japan is one of the countries with the highest natural intakes of iodine due to a diet rich in seafood. If this had to happen somewhere, the Japanese at least as a population tend not to be iodine deficient which helps protect the thyroid and lessens the amount of KI needed in an emergency.

Here is the paper:
[link to www.jstage.jst.go.jp]

Here is another paper showing that Asian's poor intake of dietary calcium places them at increased risk from radioactive strontium 90: This means that their low dietary intake of calcium may place them at increased risk from this isotope.

"Dietary intakes of seven elements of importance in radiological protection by Asian population: comparison with ICRP data."

"Within the framework of a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, the daily dietary intakes of seven elements by adult populations living in nine Asian countries were estimated. The countries that participated in the study were Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea (Republic of Korea, ROK), and Vietnam and together they represented more than half of the world population. The seven elements studied were calcium, cesium, iodine, potassium, strontium, thorium, and uranium."

"The significantly lower intake of calcium in most of the Asian countries may lead to higher uptake of fission nuclide 90Sr and could result in perhaps higher internal radiation dose."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

So it does matter what your regular diet is like before an event like this occurs. I forgot to mention that I also take Vitamin E and Calcium regularly.

That's a very nice comprehensive summary.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to compile it.

It will be helpful to incorporate as many of these suggestions as are applicable for the kind of radiation exposure we are experiencing or will experience in the future.

Here are some ideas for detoxifying baths as well (feel free to add more):

The Radiation Detox Bath
If we’re talking about a nuclear accident, you get the scrub down as well and the shower washing to wash off contamination.

The Epson Salt Bath

Here’s the typical Epson salt bath formula for detoxifying the body from general radiation exposure, such as from Cobalt-60 irradiated food, X-rays, or air flights where you are subject to high levels of ionizing radiation.

Dissolve 1/2 pound of sea salt or rock salt and 1/2 pound of baking soda and 1 cup Epson salt in a hot bath -- as hot as can be tolerated -- and soak into the water until the bath becomes cool. This usually takes about 20-25 minutes. Afterwards, do not shower or rinse the salt off your body for 4-8 hours.

The Clorox Heavy Metal Bath

If you’ve been exposed to heavy metals or carbon compounds (carbon monoxide), insecticide sprays and chemicals, you can also take a hot water Clorox bath which tends to eliminate metallic substances from the body.

Just add 1 cup of regular Clorox bleach to a tub of hot water -- as hot as can be tolerated -- and once again soak in it until the water becomes cool or body temperature. Again, don’t wash off for at least 4 hours and make sure you’re using sufficient water.
Don’t worry -- this amount of bleach in a large amount of water won’t hurt you (be sensible and use lots of water and don’t increase the bleach) but it will remove toxins from your skin, and you’ll usually feel the energizing effects of the bath in a few hours.

For Extra Pull
If you’ve been exposed to low-grade radioactive materials from the atmosphere, you can dissolve 2 pounds of baking soda in a tub of hot water, and follow the previous instructions by staying in the water until it cools.
When taking this type of bath, you should also be sipping certain teas or alkalizing your body by mixing ½ teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water and sip it during the bath.

Basic Salt Soak Bath Formula
Minerals and salts make the bath water feel silky and leave your skin cleansed and soft. This marvelous soak relaxes muscles, draws toxins from the body, and contains a natural sedative to help your nervous system relax and unwind. It is also a natural emollient and exfoliant–and it reduces swelling. All this in one simple formula!
· 1 cup sea salts
· 2 cups baking soda
· 1 cup Epsom salts
· 1 to 2 tablespoons glycerin per bath
· 4 to 6 drop of essential oil of your choice

Thanks

I also got this information somewhere but I can’t find the link right now, but I’ll post it anyway if anyone is interested:

With radioactive fallout, Parcells recommended a stronger mixture of drinking an 8-ounce glass of water containing ¼-teaspoon natural sea salt (Chico-san brand) and ¼-teaspoon baking soda. According to the severity, this was to be drunk every 2-3 hours and each glass was to be taken with 3 tablets of calcium lactate, which is a very easy to absorb form of calcium.

If an individual seemed to be experiencing symptoms in the head, sinuses, chest, glands, neck, throat, they were to add ¼-teaspoon of cream of tartar to the mixture.

Once again, don’t shower for at least 4 hours after the bath.
Dr. Parcells claimed that the best time for this type of bathing was at night when the body was geared to detoxification, and said you should only do one bath per day.
Don’t mix the ingredients from different baths together, but follow the Parcells recommendations to alternate the baths in cases of severe exposure on alternate days.

Thanks. I also wanted to get this information up as it is an alternative to oral KI or KIO3.

More information:

Don’t drink the Lugols solution or betadine as both are toxic when taken orally, but paint in on your skin. Lugols solution and betadine are both still readily available!

According to research by Ken Miller, health physicist at the Hershey Medical Center, using 24 healthy adult male test subjects he found that an adult could get a blocking dose of stable iodine by painting 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm approximately 2 hours prior to I-131 contamination.

Although there were large variations within each subject group in regard to serum-I levels and thyroid uptakes, the increase in serum-I concentration after topical-I application was effective in reducing the thyroid uptake of I131. The authors conclude that in the absence of KI, most humans would benefit from topical application of tincture of-I, and that in some the effectiveness would equal that of oral KI.

Don’t try to drink or swallow iodine such as iodine water purification tablets, tincture of iodine, or Povidone-iodine solutions (like the Betadine® brand solution). If you do that you are going to get sick because iodine is a poison. That’s why iodine bottles are marked poisonous!

The abstract of his study is titled "Effectiveness of Skin Absorption of Tincture of I in Blocking Radioiodine from the Human Thyroid Gland" from Health Physics, June 1989, Vol. 56, No. 6, pages 911-914.

More information:

“Rima Laibow, MD: Radiation detoxification:
Potassium iodide KI or KIO3, Lugol’s solution works. Iodine has low toxicity: most people are iodine deficient so high doses are advised. Just a couple (2 to 4) per day sipped in juice. Foods that may prevent the body from using iodine are: turnip, cabbage, mustard greens, cassava root, soybeans, peanuts, pine nuts and millet.

These foods are called goitrogens and excessive consumption can cause goiters so if you are using them temporarily, eat them raw. [Iodine is sold as a dietary supplement, but if sold to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine emitted by a reactor accident might be considered a "prescription drug" so remember, you are obtaining it to supplement your diet... rf]

Thank you for all of this. I'd like to add Bentonite Clay and Activated Charcoal to the list.

Bentonite info: [link to cleanse.net]

Activated charcoal info: [link to www.emedicinehealth.com]

I have both of these on hand, but I'm not going to use them unless it looks like we're really, truly, for sure getting hit.

I live in Colorado Springs, though, where radiation is super high anyway (for whatever reason ... I have no idea).

Knowing this now, I'm making green smoothies with spirulina and kelp daily, along with drinking rosemary tea, and painting iodine.

All things that are good for a body anyway. So ... no harm, no foul. :)

Later today I will try to add some of the wonderful contributions here to the first post, to make all of the information readily available to interested people.hugs

Re: Decrease radiation illness potentially by using these common items.
Thank you so much for posting all this. The fact that it is on a .gov web site is reassuring to the sheeple I am showing it to. But is it not a bit strange that our government is not referring people to information contained on their own web site?I have been compiing some of this info from here & there; nice to find it in one place.

Re: Decrease radiation illness potentially by using these common items.
Thanks for all of the contributions.

I know that people are very worried now, and much of the attention seems focused on the radioactive Iodine problem, but I 131 has a half live of only eight days, so hopefully will decrease by ½ to ¼ by the time it gets to the US. In Japan and surrounding areas, it might be a much bigger problem, especially for Japanese children. Fortunately the Japanese have a diet that is naturally high in iodine, so that may help temporarily.

What the rest of the Northern hemisphere may get is more likely to be Strontium, Cesium and Plutonium, all which have much longer half lives.

Good dietary intakes of iodine, calcium and iron, especially for children may be of benefit for the future by decreasing the pick up of the above radioactive substances. Children who are deficient in their dietary levels of iodine, calcium, and iron are more likely to pick up the detrimental radioactive analogs.

However, be very careful not to use any products that may have already been contaminated.

Here is a link for iron rich foods especially for children.

Be careful about iron tablet supplements for children, as it doesn’t take much to become toxic. Always keep iron tablets away from children as they often mistake them for candies and many overdoses are reported in children from oral iron tablets. As little as 600 mg of iron in a short time has been reported to be fatal in children.

"Iron deficiency is still a problem for some kids though, especially toddlers who are picky eaters and drink too much milk and not enough iron-rich foods.

In general, your child should eat at least two or more iron-rich foods each day. Knowing which foods actually have iron in them can be confusing for parents though."

Iron-Rich Foods
Foods that are a good source of iron include:
· liver
· lean red meats, including beef, pork, lamb
· seafood, such as oysters, clams, tuna, salmon, and shrimp, etc.
· beans, including kidney, lima, navy, black, pinto, soy beans, and lentils
· iron fortified whole grains, including cereals, breads, rice, and pasta
· greens, including collard greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, and turnip greens
· tofu
· vegetables, including broccoli, swiss chard, asparagus, parsley, watercress, brussel sprouts
· chicken and turkey
· blackstrap molasses
· nuts
· egg yolks
· dried fruits, such as raisins, prunes, dates and apricots.

For babies:

"At first, unless your baby was premature or is already anemic, your baby will usually get all of the iron she needs from breast milk or an iron-fortified infant formula. Once she is 4 to 6 months old though, she will likely begin to need some extra iron, which usually comes in the form of an iron fortified baby cereal."

Calcium rich foods for children:

"Bone Up on Kid-Friendly Calcium Sources
For growing children and teens, getting enough calcium is crucial to building bone mass, which may help guard against osteoporosis and fractures later in life. But by age 12, fewer than 1 in 10 girls and 1 in 3 boys get adequate daily calcium: 700 mg for children ages 1 to 3; 1,000 mg for ages 4 to 8; and 1,300 mg — equal to about 4 cups of milk — for ages 9 to 18. Here are a dozen kid-friendly ways to get calcium into your child's daily diet."

Re: Decrease radiation illness potentially by using these common items.
I added this to the first post also:

As related to topical iodine for protecting the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine:

Although the amount given is for an adult male, around 160-170 lbs, I don’t see why a proportionate amount could not be used on the skin of a child as long as they could not lick it off (maybe place on the skin of the lower back).

We use Betadine surgical prep on babies or very young children, so it would not be contraindicated as a topical application unless there is an allergy.

So in essence, 8 ml of a 2% solution for an adult male would be 4ml for someone weighing around 85 lbs, 2 ml for someone around 40 lbs, 1 ml for someone around 20 lbs and ½ ml for someone around 10 lbs.

Betadine surgical prep is readily available in feed and supply stores for animal use, so as long as the animal couldn’t lick it off and it was in a non-hair area (painted inside the ear flaps in rabbits or dogs) it might also work for pets.

Just my supposition, FWIW. If in doubt check with a pediatrician or veterinarian.

Pregnant women especially in Japan need to take precautions as well. In Chernobyl and neighboring Belarus there is a very high percentage of congenital anomalies, especially heart defects known as the “Chernobyl heart”.

“Despite the fact that 99% of Belarus is contaminated with radioactive material, many people refuse to leave their homes behind. Asked why he would not move, the father of a radiation victim replies, “To leave the motherland where you were born and raised, where your soul is connected to the earth – I would not want to. To move to a new place is difficult, especially in terms of a job in Belarus and abroad.”

"In Belarus, only 15-20% of babies are born healthy. Roche comforts children who are born with multiple holes in their heart,

a condition known in Belarus as “Chernobyl heart.” A lucky few will have their heart problems fixed by Dr. William Novick, who heads the International Children’s Heart Foundation."

Okay, I guess a vitamin pill(s) and some whey protein (not as much as they say on it) to include amino acids and protein.

Have you thought about writing a book on all of this because I will not even come close to remembering it.

I wanted to get as much scientifically validated information out as possible since governments are still trying to deny that there is a problem even if we can see it with our own eyes.

Writing a book takes a long time to publish, and this information needs to be in people’s hands faster. That is why GLP is a great way to distribute this.

The Chinese tanks and warships in Yemen are important, but there is not that much we can do about those situations as individuals. This is still a situation about which we can possibly do some good for a great many people just by giving knowledge.

Maybe a pin or a bump or two would allow more people to see this information or contribute to this thread.

Many thanks all. hf
