URGENT: Radiation 1,600 times normal level 20 km from Fukushima plant: IAEA Quoting: Sucks to be Japanese 1145258VIENNA, March 22, Kyodo Radiation 1,600 times higher than normal levels has been detected in an area about 20 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, International Atomic Energy Agency officials said Monday. Data collected by an IAEA team show that radiation levels of 161 microsievert per hour have been detected in the town of Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, the officials said. The government has set an exclusion zone covering areas within a 20-km radius of the plant and has urged people within 20 to 30 km to stay indoors. ==Kyodo [link to english.kyodonews.jp] Ummm, fellow doomers, you do realize that 161 mS per hour translates to 4.5 sieverts per day, right? Here's an idea for you. Go and re-read how much radiation there is. Then, study carefully the difference between MILLI and MICRO. After that, do your calculations again. |

Frequently used SI multiples are the millisievert (1 mSv = 10−3 Sv = 0.001 Sv) and microsievert (1 μSv = 10−6 Sv = 0.000001 Sv). I am sure that the report said mSV and not uSv and the reporter just "made a mistake" and said microsievert because he didn't have a u symbol on his keyboard, just like me! |

No. I'm saying that the report is radiation of 161 microsievert per hour, not 161 millisievert per hour. That is a factor of 1,000 times different. |

OP let's try a sanity check on your calculations. The radiation is 1600 times normal, right? And you calculate that will kill people in 37 hours. That means that normal radiation levels wouldn't kill people for 1600 * 37 hours = 6.75 years. Now in your experience, does everybody on the planet die of radiation poisoning in less than 7 years? |

However, in reality, one has to ask oneself just where exactly are all these gama rays coming from, hummmm? They aren't just appearing out of no where, are they! No, they are coming from Particles! Such as radioactive Iodine Radioactive Cesium Radioactive Uranium Radioactive Plutonium Radioactive Xenon etc and etc, And all it take is for you to inhale or ingest just one paticle, and in a few years you WILL get cancer! Guaranteed Death Dose! GLP right again! |

I'm in direct contact to a guy that works in a UN-Team that collects data of radiation worldwide. He did that long before the Fukushima thing. For that reason my informations are better than the things I read in the media. The correct value is 161 Microsievert per hour. The values were collected with 16 detectors. Every detector was checked two times from members of the IAEA. The value is an average of all values. I'm not sure if you are aware that this is really bad. Radiation alone is relatively harmless - nearly everything blocks it. Contaminated air is not good, but harmless too, because it spreads very fast, caused by radiation pressure. But when it comes to radioactive substances, or to be precise, to isotopes, we are talking about a lot of trouble. This level of radiation only could mean two thing and both are bad: 1. It is contaminated air. If this is the case, Fukushima 1 must be a radiation hell. In this case the next readings must be extremely heavy. But this is unlikely. 2. This readings were caused by radioactive isotopes. In this case the area is close to serious trouble. In opposite to radiated air or radiation itself it could become part of the food-chain. In this case the people in the area will face serious trouble. Let us hope, next values will be lower. OP got his calculations wrong. But this is still a serious event. If OP is correct that 161 mSv would kill people in 37 hours, then it makes sense that 161 uSv would kill people in 1000 times as long. 1000 * 37 hour = 4.22 years That is very significant. There were or are thousands of people living near those reactors. They weren't going to die of radiation poisoning before the leaks. If that level of radioactivity remains there, they will all be dead inside 5 years. It's not as dramatic as 37 hours, but it's still quite terrible. They have to find out where the radiation is coming from, stop the leaks, and clean up all radioactive material. Otherwise there is going to be a large part of Japan with no people living in it. |
