SUPER VOLCANO DOOM? North+South Korea to meet to discuss 'possible volcano eruption' - sounds serious
It is either a safe excuse to 'talk' with neither side losing face - or it is a big enough problem that compels both sides to meet in order to prepare.

----------------

S. Korea Agrees to Talks on Possible Volcano in N. Korea

Seoul, March 22 (QNA) - South Korea said it agreed Tuesday to hold talks with North Korea on a potential volcano on the communist state''s border with China, proposing a meeting of experts next week amid growing speculation the sides are seeking ways to re-establish contact. The proposal, made by the head of South Korea''s national weather agency and delivered through the liaison officials of the countries, calls for a meeting next Tuesday in the South Korean border city of Munsan, a Unification Ministry official told reporters.

Earlier this month, North Korea had proposed talks with South Korea amid growing worries of a potential eruption at Mount Paekdu.
The mountain, the highest on the Korean Peninsula, last erupted in 1903, but experts have warned that it may still have an active core, citing topographical signs and satellite images. The series of proposals by the two Koreas come as observers say the sides are putting out feelers for ways to resume dialogue.

Last month, the divided countries failed to produce any progress in their defense talks aimed at easing tension after the North shelled a South Korean island last November. "We agree on the need to cooperate in these types of matters," the ministry official said, asking not to be named. "But it is more important that experts collect information and have discussions on the extent of possible volcanic activities at Mount Paekdu."

In its letter, North Korea said the sides should discuss conducting joint research, on-site surveys and symposiums on the possible volcano eruption at Mount Paekdu. Experts have warned that an eruption would cause financial damage and disarray far greater than in Europe, where the eruption of an Icelandic volcano last year caused massive flight disruptions.

The proposal from the North's earthquake bureau came as the communist regime has been making repeated calls for talks with the South, a move that many officials here believe is a typical strategy to win aid for its impoverished people after sharply raising tensions on the peninsula. Inter-Korean relations deteriorated to their worst level in decades after 50 South Koreans died last year in the North''s shelling of the border island and the downing of a South Korean warship, also blamed on the North.

WTF? First they are shooting at each other and provoking war, and now they are going to talk about a volcano?

WHY THE HELL can they talk about a volcano but NOT when they have a conflict and/or misunderstanding?

Seriously this proves people have the capability to come to a good and peaceful situation, but why can't this be done always? Why the fucking wars and violence when clearly both are willing to talk about a volcano.

Hopefully they will realize this and work to a better future not just for the volcano but also for there people. They are after all neighbors of each other, might as well treat each other like that!

wow, its a big one too - categorised as a super-volcano no less! One can see why they might be worried if it were to erupt.

from Wikipedia:

Baekdu Mountain is a stratovolcano whose cone is truncated by a large caldera, about 5 km (3.1 miles) wide and 850 m (2,789 ft) deep, partially filled by the waters of Heaven Lake.

The caldera was created by a major eruption in 969 AD (± 20 years). Volcanic ash from this eruption has been found as far away as the southern part of Hokkaidō, the northern island of Japan. The lake has a circumference of 12 to 14 kilometres (7.5-8.7 miles), with an average depth of 213 m (699 ft) and maximum depth of 384 m (1,260 ft). From mid-October to mid-June, the lake is typically covered with ice.

The central section of the mountain rises about 3 mm every year, due to rising levels of magma below the central part of the mountain. Sixteen peaks exceeding 2,500 m (8,200 ft) line the caldera rim surrounding Heaven Lake. The highest peak, called Janggun Peak, is covered in snow about eight months of the year. The slope is relatively gentle until about 1,800 metres (5,905 ft).

Water flows north out of the lake, and near the outlet there is a 70 metre (230 ft) waterfall. The mountain is the source of the Songhua, Tumen (Duman) and Yalu (Amnok) rivers I .

many more of these, and we will have an ice age quickly or die of ash inhalation

It cant be that "super" unless the 1903 eruption was just partial.

That would be a smart way to bring peace to Korea if you had an earthquake weapon

Make the volcano rumble a bit (not too much, otherwise it'll erupt!) to force North and South Korea to co-operate, then the rest will follow.

However I think this is a natural 'awakening'

100 feet of ash covering the western coast of Japan would certainly solve the radioactivity problem.

 Quoting: nexuseditor

First of all it is a volcano which has produced a very large eruption in the past but it has not been a "super eruption" by definition. A super eruption is a VEI8 or greater. And the largest eruption Paekdu produced was a VEI7 in 946-947 A.D. Volcanic ash was found as far aways as Japan.
Now that is a BIG eruption but still not anywhere near a super eruption which would send ash all around the world.

It has had more recent eruptions. These eruptions were recorded for 1122, 1176, 1199-1201, 1217, 1373, 1401, 1403, 1405-1406, 1597, 1668, 1702 and 1903.
So based on that there really isnt much saying that there will be yet another large one. We are in for a moderate event by the looks of it.
