Anonymous Coward User ID: 1308378 United States 03/24/2011 09:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm going to the store today to buy some canned food, water, supplies, etcetera just in case SHTF. I mean, the news is getting kind of ridiculous. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1286013But I'm not sure what to get. What is the best source of information for knowing what to get? What to expect? How to prepare? The best survival guide is already built into your human mind. It is a hidden feature that not many human beings know about. When you are in danger, this feature kicks in and helps you to survive. This type of knowledge does not need to be taught. Just use logic and reasoning and you'll do fine. If you are worried about food and water, you do what the ancients did, they carefully tapped into their bodies for blood and drank each others blood for survival. Sustainable blood harvesting and drinking was a popular thing amongst the ancient civilizations during times of famine. They also ate their dead and made tools and weapons out of their bones. They ate their own feces and used the leftover as caulking to waterproof their huts and bungalows. Don't worry about it, food will be always abundant even if a famine hits. The weak that rely on clean water and canned foods will die off slowly leaving the us real survivalists to inherit the Earth. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1311386 United States 03/24/2011 09:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A good water filter is one of the best "survial" items you can obtain. If you get a water filter be sure to get one with CERAMIC filters that will handle thousands of gallons versus the ones with the other types of filters that will only handle a couple of hundred gallons before they are toast. For one big enough to handle the needs of an entire family that is also extremely portable I use a Katadyne "Camp" filter retrofitted with their ceramic filters (which have silver in them to keep internal bacterial growth down). I use that filter regularly on wilderness trips since it is a fill it and forget it system once one sets up camp in the evening. It is also less subject to "mechanical failure" than the pump systems since it is just a gravity flow system, though there are some excellent pump systems out there. Any good water filter system is NOT going to filter out radioactive iodine that is dissolved in the water, volatile chemicals, nor the small viruses (those take a reverse osmosis system, such as the emergency filters sold to sailors that can convert sea water to fresh water ... about $2000 for the smallest one fwiw), but they do clean out most of the stuff that normally makes people sick. Plan on spending about $200 to $350 for a full size system (with the ceramic filters) or $120 to $150 for a personal pump with ceramic filters. DO NOT GET ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT HAVE CERAMIC FILTERS THAT FILTER TO A VERY SMALL SIZE FOR IT!! The 200 gal life of the other types of filters will be used up in just a few days. (enough bottled water for a couple of weeks is also good to store, but doesn't replace a good filter system since you can't store enough) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1311386 United States 03/24/2011 09:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Wanted to add: As a backup to my ceramic water filter system for wilderness trips I also carry the "Polar Pure" iodine treatment system. It doesn't filter anything, just purifies the water via iodine. Again it is long lived (and small and lightweight), versus just using iodine tablets. About $10 to $15. Good camping stores in most places will have it (banned and not allowed to be sold in some states), or you can order it over the internet. |

You do need to back flush them with clean water every 500 gallons or so.We have used these on some long camping trips(16 days)the easiest way to back flush them is with one of those blue squeeze ball things they sell for babies or ears. One of those full of clean water to back flush the filter and you are good for another 500 gallons.Total weight less than 12 oz. water filter to save your ass. $34 dollars. Having clean potable water. Priceless. |

I would also suggest having "The Big Book Of Self Reliant Living", or the old version "Public Works". You are not going to carry these around as they are the size of an Atlanta phone book but if you are staying put in a shtf then this is a great book to have. |
