ACLU Forces Limestone County Schools to Revisit Policies on Religion

Athens— The American Civil Liberties Union is now involved in the separation of church and state in Limestone County Schools. This comes after a parent claimed staff members at an elementary school in Athens were handing out Bibles and promoting Creationism.

"I thought we had resolved the issue until yesterday," said Dr. Barry Carroll on Wednesday at a news conference.

In a nutshell, it's a small issue," said Carroll. "But it's a huge issue."

At the center is a table at Blue Springs Elementary School. School leaders say that's where they place materials donated to the school to be handed out to children. Students choose to pick them up or pass them by.

But one parent complained to the district that school staff -- one fifth grade teacher in particular -- was endorsing Creationism. Eventually, the parent contacted the ACLU, which sent a letter to Dr. Carroll.

"What they're doing regarding Bible distribution and the promotion of Creationism is a violation of the Constitution," said Allison Neal, a staff attorney for the ACLU in Montgomery.

Now contrast that depiction with ACLU founder Roger Baldwin's candid vision:

"I am for socialism, disarmament, and, ultimately, for abolishing the state itself... I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal"

Ironic, isn't it? So much for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." By combining straightforward segments from each ACLU rendering we arrive with an accurate portrayal. One that cuts through the doublespeak:

"The ACLU is...working daily in courts, legislatures and communities. Communism is the goal"

I really don't understand how handing out Bibles violates the First Amendment.
