Availability of iron to rats from spirulina, a blue-green algae.by P. Johnson and E. Shubert. 1986. Pub. in Nutrition Research Vol 6, 85-94. USA.

Spirulina contains a highly available form of of iron. It is unusual to find plant-derived iron that is highly available. Absorption of iron by rats and humans has been found to be highly correlated.

Spirulina fed rats absorbed iron more than or equal to rats fed iron from an iron supplement, ferrous sulfate.

In comparison, absorption of iron from potatoes and whole wheat bread is about half of ferrous sulfate. It appears spirulina is a fairly concentrated source of available iron.

Fatal Iodine Toxicity following Surgical Debridement of a Hip Wound: Case Report

This report presents the case of a patient who expired 10 hours following and emergent hip-wound debridement where Betadine(TM), a povidone iodine solution, was used to provide continuous postoperative wound irrigation. Toxic manifestations of systemic iodine absorption appeared to cause her demise.

[link to journals.lww.com]

Ok if you think that you should drink Betadine(TM), (a povidone iodine solution) please be my guest. This is very dose dependent and unnecessary since skin absorption works well. (Sometimes too well!!!!)

Just don’t try to mislead anyone else.

Here is a very good reference for using iodine (including Betadine) in water purification for those interested.

[link to www.high-altitude-medicine.com]

Notice the small amounts used:

A little goes a long way: 30 ml of Betadine® is enough to disinfect 150 liters of water, or drinking water for about 50 days of active trekking (I am presuming that some additional fluid intake exists from tea, soup, meals, etc.).

This is different from the amounts need to saturate the thyroid gland.

Iodine is an important mineral for human health and it is absolutely necessary.]

However, there is a huge difference between supplemental levels and an overdose, and it is absolutely critical that a correct dosage and the correct compound be administered.
There are also different formulations of iodine, some of which may be taken orally, and some, which should not. Iodide and iodate may be taken orally, but not iodine especially not synthetic iodine.

You might want to read the following:

I have recently read quite a few remarks about ingesting iodine, particularly in regards to a solution known as Lugol's Iodine. This solution is 5 g. of synthetic iodine, and 10 g. of synthetic potassium iodide per 100 milliliters of distilled water.

Synthetic iodine is useful as a topical antiseptic, and topical applications eliminate a plethora of health issues wrought by iodine deficiency. Because our soils have been depleted by synthetic fertilizers, and because we intake processed foods, iodine is just one of many minerals the citizens of industrialized nations tend to be starving for.
It is important for everyone to know that synthetic iodine is poisonous when orally consumed. The problems that ingested iodine cause with the central nervous system mimic other well-known poisons; for instance, the metallic taste it produces is also found in arsenic poisonings.

There are rogue people in the alternative health movement who advocate drinking as much as three teaspoons of synthetic iodine daily; to supposedly cure and prevent countless illnesses. This is a case of snake oil.

Their advice is incredibly irresponsible and dangerous; as shown by the many cases of their followers giving it children.

The people who are advocating oral iodine intake allege that the synthetic iodine itself is not toxic, and the toxic effects are a result of methanol being inside over-the-counter products. They mention Lugol's Iodine as the gold standard for ingestible iodine, and boast about its lack of methanol. However, the National Institutes of Health specifically cites Lugol's Iodine as being poisonous, and even its fumes are dangerous whenever it is heated. Do any other mineral supplements require environmental protection suits in their production process? Lugol's Iodine lacks methanol, so it is treated by the quacks as the iodine to be taken by mouth, despite all the other facts.

There is also very good evidence for the topical use of iodine to protect the thyroid gland, so this whole argument about oral synthetic iodine is pointless.

Just paint it on!

From the first page:

The abstract of his study is titled "Effectiveness of Skin Absorption of Tincture of I in Blocking Radioiodine from the Human Thyroid Gland" from Health Physics, June 1989, Vol. 56, No. 6, pages 911-914.

So in essence, For adults, paint 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm each day, ideally at least 2 hours prior to possible exposure. For children 3 to 18, but under 150 pounds, only half that amount painted on daily, or 4 ml. For children under 3 but older than a month, half again, or 2 ml. For newborns to 1 month old, half it again, or just 1 ml.

Betadine surgical prep is readily available in feed and supply stores for animal use, so as long as the animal couldn’t lick it off and it was in a non-hair area (painted inside the ear flaps in rabbits or dogs) it might also work for pets.

LMFAO....YOU are the one misleading people with AMA-Big pharma BS.

Lugols is pure potassium iodide, elemental iodine and distilled water and is (and historically has been) effectively and successfully used by MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS to treat a plethora of disease processes including thyroid disorders (both hyper, hypo and auto-immune), PCOS, fibroids, fibromyalgia, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer.

Since the OP will not conduct her due diligence in the research, hopefully the readers will.

One can start with the published research provided in a previous post and study the work of Drs. Guy Abraham, David Brownstein and Jorge Flechas...yes, all MDs. They are, and have been, saving the health and lives of many men and women where endocrinologists have miserably failed.

Finally, if you are actually interested in treatment testimonials, which at this point I believe you are just arrogantly closed minded, but if you are not, then pop in and ask all your questions to this group of hundreds:

Understand the reason the "medical" establishment and big pharma are so against iodine supplementation: it is highly effective and cannot be patented.

Although it’s rare, you might even earn yourself a Darwin award with an iodine overdose:

The acute toxicity of iodine to animals in the form of sodium and potassium iodide and iodate has been reviewed by the Select Committee on GRAS Substances (1975).

Depending on the species, amounts between 200 and 500 mg/kg bw/day produced death in experimental animals. The consumption of large single doses of iodine-containing solutions by humans may have extreme side effects and may result in death.

A 56-year-old female who attempted suicide with an unknown quantity of Lugol's solution showed gastrointestinal irritation and ulceration, chemical pneumonitis, hyperthyroidism, hemolytic anemia, acute renal failure(due to tubular necrosis), and metabolic acidosis (Dyck et al.,1979).

A fatal case of iodine poisoning in a 57-year-old male showed symptoms of weak pulse, urinary retention, delirium, stupor, and collapse (Clark, 1981). The amount of iodine consumed was not determined. Finkelstein & Jacobi (1937) reported a case of a 29-year-old male who ingested an unknown amount of tincture of iodine and experienced vomiting, abdominal cramps, anuria, fever, irrational behavior, coma, and cyanosis. He died on the sixth day after ingesting the iodine. [link to www.inchem.org]

Yes, you have attempted countless times to rather ineffectively make your point.jerkit

Your inability to understand the differences between iodine, iodate, and iodide as well as correct dosages and modes of administration is truly breathtaking.

Yes, let the readers decide.

Otherwise you are just purposely trying to troll this thread. feedtroll

BTW about your so called expert, Dr. Guy E. Abraham:

It is worth noting that Dr. Guy E. Abraham has been repeatedly quoted and cited by our visiting iodine drinkers, as their "expert"; so it is worth a moment to discuss him. Guy Abraham is the lone messiah of iodine drinkers, and his followers are like the church members who are snake handlers in bizarre self-poisoning rituals. It is why we spend little time responding to them, or allowing them to use this site as a forum to win new converts.

If you want to start your own thread about the benefits of drinking Lugol's solution, be my guest, but lay off the Abraham’s propaganda on my thread.

People have seen it and can follow up on it if they are interested. Iodine is a necessary and important mineral, but the key is in understanding the differences between iodine, iodate, and iodide as well as correct dosages and modes of administration.

These calculations are somewhat complicated and people should follow known recommendations and not those of a quack. I don’t want anyone to do anything dangerous in a misguided attempt to prevent thyroid cancer.

Also, feel free to earn yourself a Darwin award.deadhorse

A 56-year-old female who attempted suicide with an unknown quantity of Lugol's solution showed gastrointestinal irritation and ulceration, chemical pneumonitis, hyperthyroidism, hemolytic anemia, acute renal failure (due to tubular necrosis), and metabolic acidosis (Dyck et al., 1979). He died on the sixth day after ingesting the iodine.[/b]

Finkelstein & Jacobi (1937) reviewed six-year records of the Medical Examiner's Office of New York City and found 18 instances of suicide by iodine. Death usually occurred within 48 hours after taking the solution.
The amount taken was recorded in only nine cases and ranged from one to eight ounces of tincture (approximately 1,184 to 9,472 mg of iodine). Tresch et al. (1974) reported the case of a 54-year-old man who mistakenly ingested a potassium iodide solution, which contained 15,000 mg of iodine. He survived the poisoning, but experienced ventricular irritability, swelling of face, neck, and mouth, periorbital edema, serous conjunctivitis, edematous nasal mucosa, and enlarged and tender salivary glands.

Also I do not consider Abraham’s propaganda, U-Tube videos or Yahoo health groups to be credible scientific information.

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Japan said radiation levels in spinach and milk from farms near its tsunami-crippled nuclear complex exceeded government safety limits, as emergency teams scrambled Saturday to restore power to the plant so it could cool dangerously overheated fuel.
The food was taken from farms as far as 65 miles from the stricken plants, suggesting a wide area of nuclear contamination.
While the radiation levels exceeded the limits allowed by the government, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano insisted the products "pose no immediate health risk."[/b] [link to www.cbsnews.com]

For those who do not believe what governments are currently telling us about the safe levels of radiation in the things that we and our children consume I would like to do a short summary on what to avoid and foods that are more likely to be contaminated by radioactive fallout.

The US Air Force Survival Handbook offers the following summary:

Here is a general basic summary:

1. Land animals will be safer than sea animals.
2. Eggs within the shell should be safe.
3. Meat and milk from animals grazing in contaminated zones should be avoided.
4. Plants grown underground (Potatoes, carrots, turnips, ect) should be safer once scrubbed clean.
5. Fruits and vegetables should be peeled whenever possible.
6. Rains can increase contamination, especially for water soluble contaminates such as Strontium.

[link to books.google.com]
Another good summary:

Soaking foods in salt water, and boiling them in salt water and a small amount of vinegar, with discarding the vinegar and salt water may also be helpful.

Cheese, cottage cheese, and butter will contain less contamination than milk, as the Cesium is concentrated in the whey rather than the curds.

Eliminate raw food stuffs from contaminated areas.

Depending upon the surface, removal of the outer layer of bread and meat (1.5 cm) and of cheese, (0.5 cm) may reduce contamination.

There is much interesting information here:

"The health ministry said Sunday it has detected radioactive substances higher than the legal limits in mushrooms sampled Friday in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, where the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is located."

"Meanwhile, the science ministry said its helicopter, which examined air samples at the altitude of 160-650 meters, detected radiation of 0.30 microsieverts per hour in the sky above Kawamata in the prefecture -- a level more than 10 times the normal figures for the prefecture's sky at 0.01-0.03 microsieverts."

''Radioactive substances have spread to higher altitudes in the atmosphere,'' the ministry said.

"The lingering effects of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in 1986 in Ukraine continue to affect entire eco-systems in Europe. An example of such effects is the radioactive contamination (cesium-137 contamination) of wild mushrooms in certain European countries["/b].

"With the recent developments at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan and the uncertainty of the consequences of the disaster, the topic of nuclear contamination of food has re-gained considerable public attention over the past weeks."

"Mushrooms' Affinity for Cesium-137 and Other Radionuclides"

"Fungi, which lack stems and roots, use absorption to obtain nutrition from the atmosphere through their surface cells. As a result, they are prone to absorbing radioactive substances such as cesium-137 (also known as caesium-137, radiocaesium-137 and 137 Cs) and other radionuclides. Cesium is one of the by-products of nuclear fission processes in nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons testing. The Chernobyl power plant released significant amounts of radiocesium-137 into the environment, but also the nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s released some cesium."

The half-life of cesium-137 is 30 years and it is associated with an increased risk of cancer.

Re: **RADIATION PROTECTION**- non prescription list, revised and updated.
"Scientific American: Half-Life and Death: Radioactive Drinking Water Scare in Japan Subsides, but Questions Remain"

"Some radioactive contaminants could be filtered out or allowed to decay, whereas others would pose more serious long-term problems."

"Despite the ongoing work to stabilize the plant and fears that radioactive materials had contaminated tap water as far away as Tokyo, 240 kilometers to the south, most of the recommended restrictions on drinking water have been lifted".

"Still, the presence of radioactive iodine and cesium in the water supply—four villages in Fukushima Prefecture are still recommending that children less than one year old not be given tap water—raises public health questions moving forward."

"Exposure to or ingestion of radioactive isotopes, or radionuclides, (species of the same element with differing numbers of neutrons and hence differing atomic weights) can lead to a number of health problems, including nausea and vomiting at low doses, and central nervous system damage and internal bleeding at high doses. Radioactive iodine, in particular, concentrates in the thyroid and can result in thyroid cancer, particularly in children.""

"The University of Tokyo Hospital Radiation Oncology Team had reported finding 170 becquerels per kilogram of iodine 131 in Fukushima's drinking water on March 18, although the level has since dropped significantly."

"One becquerel represents the rate of radioactive decay—or radiation emitted by a substance—as one disintegration, or count, per second. The March 18 number is significant because the Japanese government mandates that infants less than one year old not be given water with a concentration of greater than 100 becquerels per kilogram. (A liter of water weighs one kilogram.) Adults should avoid any water with more than 300 becquerels per kilogram, according to the government's current standards."

Radioactive removal

"Most radioactive radionuclides—including iodine 131 and cesium 134 and 137—can be removed from water. Others, such as tritium, a heavy form of hydrogen that is the most ubiquitous radioactive pollutant produced by nuclear power plants, cannot be filtered out of water."

"Whether and how an isotope could and would be removed depends on which it is. Unlike drinking water contaminated with microbial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, giardia or cryptosporidium, water containing radioactive material cannot be made potable by boiling, bleach or exposure to ultraviolet light. Instead, isotopes must be removed using activated charcoal filtration, reverse osmosis or water softening, to name a few methods".

"Radioactive material may also fall out of a water supply by settling to the bottom of a reservoir or via adsorption (adhesion) onto the surface of soil particles in a reservoir. Another option with some radioactive contaminants is to wait until they radioactively decay to safe levels—a period known as half-life, which greatly varies with the particular isotope, from seconds to tens of thousands of years."

"There is no single approach to removing radioactive iodine, cesium or other radionuclides from water. "You need to know what's in the water because that will help tell you whether you can remove it or not, and what kind of water treatment process you need to perform," says David Ozonoff, an environmental health professor and chair emeritus of the Boston University School of Public Health."

"Given the relatively short half-life of iodine 131, officials are more likely to wait out the decay process."
"As for isotopes like cesium 137, however, its decay half-life is around 30 years
."

Kelp is wonderful, especially the brown kelp which is high in Sodium Alginates and iodine. Keeping higher levels of iodine in the thyroid gland will help decrease the uptake of radioactive I 131, although, its hard to get enough iodine from kelp alone, every little bit helps.

Be careful of when the kelp was packaged as seaweeds and kelp pick up radioactive isotopes; as they help to decontaminate the sea. So you would want to buy kelp packaged before 3-11-11 especially if from the Pacific.

I guess I should clarify:
