It's hard to understand fully, I am starting some Binaural Beats to help me. I just started one for Lucid Dreaming first last night. I can say it seemed to work but it wasn't very strong. I had dreams I remembered when I woke up which is rare for me.

Are you using I-doser's lucid dream? It works, just need to give it time. After a few weeks of it I was looking forward to dreaming every night.

I guess the one thing I wonder about is whether I'm supposed to use it while I go to sleep or earlier in the day? And when I do, do I just let myself fall asleep like normal? As for the beats, should the volume be louder?

For lucid dream I use it when I'm in bed and drift off while it's still on sometimes. You can use others fully awake, just make sure you're comfortable.

Use a blindfold if you can to cut out all distractions.

I keep it loud enough to hear the flutter of beats but not so loud it disturbs your attempt to sleep.

Also if you get I-doser their Hand of God track is pretty interesting too.
