U.S. Navy to Provide 500,000 Gallons of Fresh Water to Fukushima Power Plant
"U.S. Navy to Provide 500,000 Gallons of Fresh Water to Fukushima Power Plant"

"YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) began transferring fresh water to two fuel barges, which will be used to support cooling efforts at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, March 25."

"A total of 1.89 million litres (500,000 gallons) are being distributed between the barges that have been cleaned of fuel to support fresh water. The first Barge YOGN-115 departed CFAY at approximately 11:00 a.m. and will be escorted by a Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) multipurpose support ship JS Hiuchi (AMS 4302). The second barge is scheduled to leave within the next 24 to 48 hours. The water will eventually be used to replace the seawater currently being used in cooling efforts at the plant."

"We have two barges here," said CFAY Operations Officer Lt. Cmdr. Michael Weatherford. "They can both hold up to approximately 300,000 gallons of fresh water each. But the max capacity is reduced to make the barges seaworthy for ocean travel. The request was for one million gallons, so when I told them we could get 500,000 gallons we started working on getting these barges released from our custody over to the [Japan Maritime Self Defense Force]."

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Americans and the U.S. Navy personnel who provided us with prompt response in the wake of the earthquake," said Kitagawa. "

"Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the U.S. Naval ships off the coast of Sanriku are still searching for the missing people and delivering foods to the victims in the shelters together. The hearts of the U.S. Sailors have been reaching Japanese people. I really appreciate it and am very proud that JMSDF and the U.S. Navy once again can work together. Thank you all, again."

Re: U.S. Navy to Provide 500,000 Gallons of Fresh Water to Fukushima Power Plant
They need the fresh water badly!

"Radiation Levels Rise at Fukushima as Government Says Situation Is Stable"

"Japan’s government said the nuclear crisis at a quake-damaged power plant isn’t getting worse as radiation levels rise in sea water used to cool over-heating fuel rods."

"We are not ready to comment on the schedule to turn on other facilities,” Muto said. “We need to connect a power cable to a cooling pump, which is located in the turbine housing where the water pool was found. We need to drain the water on the basement floor first.”
"Muto said he can’t confirm that water from Tepco’s reactors is flowing into the sea."

"The company is also starting to switch to fresh water for its cooling efforts of spent fuel rods and the reactor core to prevent further salt corrosion".

"Tepco stopped dousing sea water on a pool containing spent fuel rods in the No. 1 reactor after radiation levels rose to 200 millisieverts per hour, Kyodo News reported, without citing anyone."

How is it that Japan doesn't have fresh water available?

Does it have to be pure H2O?

Can they not just use tap water?
Ayatollah Khomeini:
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of [other] countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world…. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender to the enemy? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] verses and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

They need lots of it and in close, hence the Navy barges.

I hope that they gave our sailors radioactive iodine prophylaxis.

This may be a faint ray of hope, that Japan has given up trying to handle the situation completely on its own and is allowing international assistance.

I would imagine most of the water infrastructure is damaged in that region.

Or it might be the final "last ditch" effort before the thing blows itself apart or burns into the water table.

What it says to me, is that something is changing in the mix and not in a good way.

Either the situation is getting so dire that Japan no longer wants luxury of attempting to handle the situation on its own, or the situation is becoming so dire that the US is stepping in to help and attempt to protect its own homeland and interests at the same time.
