[UPDATED]Dr. Caldicott and others: Nuclear Catastrophe in Japan and You. News and realtime info.
A MEDICAL PROBLEM OF VAST DIMENSIONS

helencaldicott2.jpgAs I write this on 25 March from Ottawa , two weeks since the earthquake and tsunami and the calamity that has befallen the Fukushima Nuclear Plant No 1, the situation has grown increasingly grave. Despite the heroic efforts of the “Nuclear Samurai” – the TEPCO employees who have selflessly and heroically fought to stabilize the reactors and restore power – there are worrying signs that signal dangerous instability continues to reign. Among them, the announcement today that one of the reactor cores may have suffered a break that could have released large amounts of radiation at the plant; the widening of the exclusion zone to 30 kilometers ; and the US government ban on certain milk and vegetables from that area from importation. So in 1993 I first ran across this woman. Her work was published in a book published by NOVA. Just a few paragraphs and I was hooked. So I took a side and even went back to the library for a cassette she had made. I guess is impressed me that she of all else took a stand against nukes and since I am a baby of the nuclear age I believed she was standing against progress as far as I was told or allowed to believe. My head and heard railed when her figures spread through me and the trouble she predicted if we continued along our course brought a clear understanding that nukes are bad, that even medicine had to be heeled from it course, that Nuclear Accidents are terrible, that a nuclear bomb was a terrible thing.

This is her newest writing, Dated yesterday. She gives a link and the page it is written on contains more. She doesn't write much, but she has been in the field longer than anybody I know.

"A MEDICAL PROBLEM OF VAST DIMENSIONS"
"In truth, as I say in this just-published CNN Opinion piece nuclear power and its deleterious effects are a medical problem of vast dimensions -- the greatest public health hazard the world will ever see."
..............
"...Tragically, the “Nuclear Samurai” work for a company -- TEPCO --that has been exposed as having ignored mandatory safety checks at Fukushima ; as allowing spent fuel rods far in excess of the number that was deemed prudent to be stored on site; and as being evasive and unforthcoming about the real facts of the unfolding emergency

What we have also seen is a second tsunami of a different kind – a tidal wave of blow-back from the nuclear industry around the world, which has been rocked back on its heels by Fukushima but is now regrouping. There are claims that radiation is good for you; that nuclear power is still the only answer to global warming; and that fears about the safety of nuclear power are unwarranted and panic-stricken.

Let us be clear: there are billions and billions of dollars at stake for the nuclear industry, which has, as I’ve written earlier, managed to bamboozle governments around the world , much of the press, and many ordinary citizens into believing that nuclear power is green and clean. Nothing could be further from the truth. The industry will not walk away from that money without a fight."

So no-body can read!

[link to www.cnn.com]

High levels of exposure can cause acute radiation sickness, a syndrome first recognized by the medical profession after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It can have terrible effects. In two weeks, victims' hair begins to drop out. They develop hemorrhaging under the skin, severe nausea and diarrhea and may eventually die from bleeding or infection.

If a meltdown occurred at the plant, a large number of people could be exposed to high doses of radiation in this region, one of the most heavily populated in Japan. (After the March 11 earthquake, the Japanese government evacuated people living within a 20-kilometer radius to mitigate the possibility.)

Men exposed to such a dose would be rendered sterile, women would stop menstruating, and spontaneous abortions would likely occur. Babies could be born with microcephaly, with tiny heads and mental disabilities. Many people would develop acute shortness of breath from lung damage. In five years, there would be an epidemic of leukemia, and in 15 years, solid cancers would start appearing in many organs: lung, breast, thyroid, brain and bone.

It gets better. The CEO of The Nuclear Energy Institute says proliferation of Nuclear Power Plants in the US are safe. Says Marvin Fertel, "We will apply lessons learned to US Nuclear Power Plants"

Yeah, says Marvin Fertel.

But remember his job and billions of dollars rely on you believing this lie! Believe Dr. Caldicott!

Bump.

An aggressive U.S. agenda must be established by state and fed-
eral governments mandating reduced energy use at the consumption
end of the equation, not just the production end. And individuals
must urgently take responsibility for the way they live. While
global warming is upon us, the earth is getting hotter; hurricanes
and cyclones abound; and droughts, wildfires, and flooding rains
destroy property, kill people, and devastate broad tracts of land.

• use energy efficient light bulbs and light fixtures.
• use energy classified refrigerators and washing machines.
• use energy efficient dishwashers. (Or, better yet, discard
your dishwasher and wash your dishes by hand in one sink
full of water; that's what I do!)
• cease using clothes driers, which account for 6% of residen-
tial electricity use. Hang clothes out in the sun to dry in the
summer and by the furnace in the winter.
• use solar hot-water systems. These are extremely efficient
and readily available.
• lower the home temperature in the winter and turn off air-
conditioning in the summer. In most but not all U.S. cli-
mates, air-conditioning is unnecessary for survival.

• completely weatherize houses with effective wall, ceiling,
and floor insulation.
• build domestic dwellings to face south, acting as passive so-
lar collectors.
• build overhanging eaves and plant deciduous trees to
shade houses in the summer and provide sunlight in the
winter.
• install a subsidized solar electricity generator on the roof.
...

• Energy-efficiency programs save huge amounts of money
in statewide electricity costs and substantially reduce en-
ergy bills of customers.
• Energy efficiency significantly improves the environment,
because for each kilowatt saved there is less electricity gen-
eration and less pollution from coal, oil, natural gas, or nu-
clear power.
• Energy efficiency promotes local economic development,
creating jobs and increasing the disposable income of local
citizens and businesses.

• Energy efficiency increases the independence of utilities
because they don't need to import fuels—coal, gas, oil, or
uranium—from other regions or countries.

Good thread, OP.

The US never had a 'need' for nuke plants. But we have them for 2 reasons:

1) there is a tremendous amount of $$$ spent building and then running the operations. That is for graft.

2) The US Govt wanted a ready supply of material with which to build weapons.

Today the USA has more than 17000 nuclear bombs, missiles and explosive devices. Can anyone, even the world's biggest warmongering hawk EVER argue the need for 17,000 different nuke explosions??? Wouldn't 10 do the trick? Maybe 100?? OK.... 1000 different detonations - would that be enough to insure peace???

It is humorous though (in a macabre way for those of us on the West Coast) to think that we're getting irradiated via Japan. The same country our forefathers hit with 2 atom bombs.

But of course it sould also be understood that we are allowing our ''leaders'' to spread Depleted Uranium all over Iraq and Afghanistan (as we did Kosovo) and as we are now doing for the good people of Libya.

One good turn deserves another, I guess.

Radioactive leaks increasing at U.S. nuclear plants
[link to www.mycentraljersey.com]

 Quoting: Waterbug

Millions of gallons of radioactive water have leaked from nuclear power plants throughout the U.S. since the 1970s, threatening water supplies in New Jersey and other states, an Asbury Park Press investigation found.

Despite massive leaks that pollute groundwater, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has never fined a violator - even plant operators that repeatedly leaked tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen and a common byproduct of nuclear fission that can cause cancer.
NRC and industry officials say the leaks have posed little or no risk to drinking water wells or the public health because contaminated groundwater has almost always remained under the power plant sites.
Critics say that is not the point. Just as it is illegal for other companies to spill toxic waste onto the soil, nuclear plants should not get a pass when it comes to polluting groundwater with radiation. The critics say the NRC's lax oversight has allowed the radioactive leaks to go on for decades - with little regard for the public's health.

I am a qualified Nuclear Reactor Plant operator though I have not done so for forty years now. Radiation exposure is not safe and can lead to cancer at any time.

Because it finally dawned on me after working in the industry for years, I chose another profession and became a Data Communications Manager for AT&T. I had tolearn a whole new field of work and there was a lot to learn, but I managed and raised 30 kids on that job with AT&T (SBC/Pacific Bell)

I still have the knowledge of Nuclear Plant operations and one thing I am certain of. I am convinced that the Japanese have been deceiving us ever since March 11th.
