Each Fukushima spent fuel pool holds about 100 metric tons, he says, while each US pool holds from 500-700 metric tons. A single pool fire would release catastrophic amounts of radioactivity, rendering 17-22,000 square miles of area uninhabitable. That’s about the size of New Hampshire and Vermont – from one pool fire.

Whatever happened to all those quarantine zones where they were stuff all the people who were testing positive for radiation? I haven't heard a word about it. I believe there are masses of people sick and dying from radiation and it's being covered up. Though even with a lethal dose of radiation it can take days or weeks to show up and a month to really kill a person.

Exclusive: Fukushima babies, pregnant women nuclear fallout rescue underway

Babies and pregnant women are being rescued from the Fukushima Nuclear power plant fallout area despite Japanese government telling everyone within the 20-mile radius danger zone of the leaking plants to remain indoors where people are being radiated. A grassroots group began the high-risk rescue mission Monday.

The first eight of approximately 1000 women and babies to be rescued within the 20 miles radius left the area Monday with help by Connected Light according to the group's co-founder, Yumi Kikuchi who contacted Dupré for help late Tuesday night.

#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: TEPCO Is Testing for Plutonium (Press Conference)

It started around 4:40PM JST, March 27, 2011. I tuned in just when they were finishing reporting on plutonium testing. They said they have asked an outside company (missed the name) to do the soil analysis for plutonium, and it takes about one week for the result. The soil sample was taken on March 21 and 22, which TEPCO didn't bother to tell anyone.

I am not sure of that story...I need to find confirmation. Some people are posting old news on Twitter...so one has to be careful before spreading it...

I'd rather hold off until I can find that there is confirmation from other sources. Enough bad news to go around, no need to cause more panic ...yet

although quite a few experts have said the possibility of an explosion exists, and could be growing :(

So that bullshit plan to pump water out of the turbine building basement into the condenser storage just blew up.

Safety agency officials had been hoping to pump the water into huge, partly empty tanks inside the reactor that are designed to hold condensed water.

Those tanks, though, turned out to be completely full, said Hidehiko Nishiyama of Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

Meanwhile, plans to use regular power to restart the cooling system hit a roadblock when it turned out that cables had to be laid through turbine buildings flooded with the contaminated water.

"The problem is that right now nobody can reach the turbine houses where key electrical work must be done," Nishiyama said. "There is a possibility that we may have to give up on that plan."

Where Did the Water in the Spent Fuel Pools Go?

Since early in the current crisis—a few days after the earthquake and tsunami damaged the reactors at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi facility—people have been concerned about lack of water in the spent fuel pools at the reactors. The water is needed to cool the spent fuel rods, which continue to generate significant heat for years after being removed from the reactor core due to their radioactivity...

...As long as the water, even though boiling, continues to cover the fuel rods it protects them from damage. But once it drops far enough to expose a meter or so of the rods, the exposed sections can become hot enough to damage the cladding on the rods and release radioactive gases. If the fuel continues to heat up, the cladding can begin to burn, which produces hydrogen. If enough hydrogen collects above the pool, it can explode.

They go on to say:

Reports also said that workers began taking initial steps on March 15 to cool the water in the pools at Units 5 and 6, and that by March 17 temperatures were still rising, reaching between 60 and 70 degrees C. This is also roughly consistent with the numbers in the table, assuming these pools were full of water. By March 19, cooling at both pools 5 and 6 appeared to be working to bring the temperatures down.

But the times in the table indicate that boiling of the water in the pools would take much too long to account for the low water levels and exposed fuel reported at the spent fuel pools in Units 2, 3, and 4. So something else must have caused the low water levels.

I share your impression. We saw a few hydrogen explosions in the beginning of this drama, they made a very good effort to cool the cores and the spent fuel pools since.

It cannot go on forever in this fashion, though. Radiation at the site now seems already too high for humans to endure, the ongoing makeshift cooling attempts cannot continue for long because of it.

When no people can be present at the site to suppress the deepening of the disaster, things could escalate very quickly. I sincerely hope I'm wrong in my conclusions from available information.

I cannot say how sorry I am to see what is about to happen, as if it was not enough what already transpired.
