I worked in a nursing home they always stressed being clean and keeping patients clean or else theyd catch a fatal bacterium From ABC news.com CRKP is an enterobacterium like salmonella and E. coli. It is unclear how many cases of the 350 reported by Terashita and colleagues were fatal. It is also unclear whether the infections stemmed from improper care at long term-care facilities or the frailty of the patients they serve. But Terashita said infected patients tended to have health problems that often resulted in antibiotic use, which might have made them more susceptible. "All of these factors contribute to a greater risk for health care-acquired infections," she said. Besser said, "This superbug is very dangerous. It tends to affect people that are in the hospital for long periods of time; people that have underlying medical problems; people who have been in nursing homes." Although healthy people in the general public are not at risk for infection, they could transmit the bacteria to sick loved ones. |

BigNutChuck User ID: 1149035 United States 03/28/2011 07:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Listen kids! These are part of many, many super bugs. They are bacteria that have become resistant to most (if not all) Antibiotics. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Staph Aureus is NORMAL FLORA FOR YOUR BODY. Yet it is very opportunistic. Meaning, if it gets somewhere it is not supposed to be---it causes problems. It is like every other bacteria—meaning it will adapt to survive. AKA—become resistant to something trying to kill it. OK Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is another Normal Flora family of bacteria Example E. Coli Psedomonas Proteus [link to www.textbookofbacteriology.net] Quote from article OP linked to “The KPC gene makes Enterobacteriaceae bacteria resistant to all beta-lactam/carbapenem antibiotics” We report these in the Medical World as MDRO Multi-Drug-Resistant-Organisms Klebsiella is another one. You here in the media world (Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, or CRKP) Once again the “carbapenems” means Carbapenems are a class of beta-lactam antibiotics with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. [link to en.wikipedia.org] Now are these scary. Yes very. Because most of these you are hearing about now USED TO BE VERY EASY TO KILL IN THE PAST. Most of these mentioned in this post are the common cause of UTI’S and other common infection. These are a lot of times normal flora like I said before, but when they get somewhere they are not supposed to be the cause problems. (Opportunistic) In the last few years many bacteria have taken a SUPER JUMP in becoming resistant. One reason is because big pharm is not really putting out any new Antibiotics. The other reason is the OVER USES of what antibiotics we have. Not just in human medicine, but in live stock feeds, etc, etc. You should research how much we use antibiotics. Might just scare the hell out of you, lol. You can’t run from this. All you can do is KEEP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM HEALTHY AND WASH YOUR HANDS. Obviously these are going to be found in hospitals and nursing homes because this is where a large group of IMMUNE COMPROMISED PEOPLE ARE and they are SHARING DISEASE---AKA---GERM BREEDING GROUND. These are VERY SERIOUS. I am not trying to take away from OP thread, but I just want people to understand that these are bacteria that have been bombarded with antibiotics and they are MUTATING TO SURVIVE. Every year more strains become more resistant. No matter how resistant they become---Your immune system can defeat them. But if your immune system is weak---YOU’RE INTROUBLE IF YOU GET INFECTED. Example: Elderly people come down all the time with these types of infections. If the elderly person’s immune system is shot completely, they are in big trouble. Even if you can find an antibiotic that works, YOU STILL HAVE TO HAVE THE IMMUNE SYSTEMS HELP. If there is a severe infection---YOU CAN NOT GIVE ENOUGH ANTIBIOTICS TO KILL ALL THE BACTERIA CAUSING THE PROBLEM WITHOUT KILLING THE PERSON (In a person that is completely Immunocompromised) . Without the immune system there is no chance of winning. Last Edited by BigNutChuck on 03/28/2011 07:53 AM Rather die standing than live kneeling |

I caught it two months ago and it was the worst sickness ive had.. Theyve been tracking this new form of flu and once it settles in your lungs, expect your life to really suck, Its bad. new strain of the flu? This isn't even the same organism. The Flu is a virus. This superbug is a bacteria - in the family of E coli. You may have been tracking something for months but it wasn't this. Read the source material.... The bacteria causes all kinds of things, not just a violent cough... and it is a super bug because it is resistant to antibiotics which most viruses aren't. ^^ this ^^ |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1061351 United States 03/28/2011 08:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.usatoday.com] The bacteria are equipped with a gene that enables them to produce an enzyme that disables antibiotics. The enzyme is called Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenamase, or KPC. It disables carbapenam antibiotics, last-ditch treatments for infections that don't respond to other drugs. "We've lost our drug of last resort," Fishman says. |

Someone that I know that is a busy MD that spends plenty of time in the various ICUs and says this is not some "superbug" like most of you envision it and you all are tarding over nothing. There are many forms of bacteria that are highly resistant to antibiotics, and most of these particular infections manifest themselves in hospitals or other care facilities. |
