Berkeley lab : radiation is getting bad in California drinking water
[link to www.idealist.ws]
UPDATE: a Berkeley lab's results from testing rainwater on March 23rd suggests that 1 liter of rain-harvested drinking water in Berkeley, Calif., would have an iodine-131 concentration of 542.7 picocuries and consuming one liter of this water would provide a radiation dose to the thyroid of an infant of 7.54 millirems. About 132 liters of water contaminated at these levels would provide 1 Rem dose to the infant thyroid. (Per NRC NUREG 1.109 rev. 1 Oct. '77). At these levels, a Bay Area adult would have to breath for 425 days to receive the same iodine-131 exposure as drinking 1 liter of rain-harvested drinking water. Also, the cesium-137 levels in rain water for March 23-24 broke a new high record peak since analyses begin on March 17 at the Berkeley lab - it's now at 16 picoCuries of Cesium-137 per liter of rain-harvested water. Boil down a liter of this rainwater, or ash in an oven a rain-soaked 'sticky' film filter, and it would measure on an advanced gamma counter 1,344 clicks per minute (CPM) *above* normal background levels - that doesn't even include the beta or alpha particles, including the beta energies of the Iodine-131 and Cesium-137!

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. This is a story right here that should worry everyone downwind of these Japan nuclear reactors. The big problem here is not in the daily reporting of this much radiation and that much radiation. The real problem is that some areas are being hit by radiation on a daily basis, which means the 'saturation levels' are rising higher and higher and making the soil and water more and more polluted with radiation poison. If you are 50+ or 60+ years old, these raised concentrations might be meaningless; because you are on the last legs anyway and will likely die from something else. However, the children living in the high saturation levels have developing tissues that are being corrupted by radiation and these people will experience higher cancer rates in the future from this Japan catastrophe that will continue to get worse and worse.

Just like in Japan, by the time you receive the warnings it will be too late ...

Grateful for the post OP!

My intuition has been screaming that all is not what it seems.

I have been changing the water containers for our farm animals everyday. We are on a well system.

It rained for a few days until yesterday so those days we were changing water several times a day.

People do not realize that most city water is in open reservoir's before being delivered to the closed container tanks in different areas.

Here in SoCal, the water is exposed for miles, coming from east California, in large water runways.

It is absolutely open to the rain and radioactive particles.

Found this and thought it was interesting.

From David Vaughn, geochemist who was formerly under contract with the Dept of Defense and Dept of Energy doing uranium prospecting for Savannah River Laboratories:

I worry least about reservoir water supplies because the radioactive particles will settle out quickly and disperse into the sediments, but the fallout will be in snowmelt too, so exposure will be long and sustained. Water is not drawn from the bottom of the reservoir for municipal water supplies. Particulate that happens to make it into the water supply to your home can be filtered out with a carbon filter. If radiation levels in the water are high then the filters may become dangerous and must be handled accordingly. You should change your filters more often if fallout becomes significant.

"Health Maintenance During Radioactive Fallout

There are a number of supplements, foods, and protocols that can protect you during a period of low-level radioactive fallout. Understand that potassium iodide (KI) only protects the thyroid, not the rest of the body. Radioactive isotopes will become dispersed and diluted with distance, but will be measurable in many areas. In the event of an acute exposure with no KI available, application of a 2 percent tincture of iodine to the abdomen would suffice. This is not recommended with passive exposure from long-traveled radiation clouds. Never drink these iodine solutions; they are poisonous.

Instead, consider more general health precautions…

Exposure to low-grade radioactive fallout may necessitate a baking soda bath. This should be combined with drinking a solution of water with baking soda and sea salt and taking calcium lactate supplements for nightly detoxification. Bentonite clay baths and even taken internally can also assist in detoxification.

Algae supplements such as spirulina and chlorella should also be consumed because they accelerate the evacuation of radionuclides from the human body. Seaweed and kelp contain sodium alginate that bind radioactive compounds and are also recommended.

Re: Berkeley lab : radiation is getting bad in California drinking water
We need the radiation monitoring in the USA to be at the same scale that we now have weather monitoring stations.

There are thousands of weather monitoring stations around the U.S.A. that are reporting nearly real time, minute by minute, and feed into the National Weather Service with their reports of Air Pressure, Humidity, Temperature, Wind speed, Wind direction, precipitaiton (rain, hail, and snowfall). Not to mention the remote sensing of all the weather Radars.

Radiation monitoring cannot be done like the Weather Radars, the radiation cannot be detected so remotely.

What we need to to have the beta, gamma, an neutron, radiation monitoring (as well as UV and X-Ray monitoring) to be at the same scale as our weather monitor stations.

We have Cell Phone towers spaced abut 2 to 4 miles apart covering nearly all the U.S.A., but we only can have not even two hundred radiation monitoring stations?

[link to www.idealist.ws] has some relevant comments on the laxidaisical radiation monitoring scene in the U.S.A.
