Some ppl say that there are differences between a normal compass and GPS ... Of course there are differences. On a GPS, the direction points are taken from a grid of geostationary satellites, which means they are related to physical Earth. On a compass, the direction points are derived from the magnetic field of the planet, which is not the same as the physical points. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1258525 United States 03/30/2011 10:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Quoting: oeroe2911 OP the compasses are off not because the poles are moving but from the charged particles thrown out from the sun have a greater magnetic field or better said a stronger magnetic field than the north and south poles. For this reason a magnetic compass will momentarily try to follow the highly charged solar wind as it flows along the magnetosphere. Once the wind is passed the compass needle will track back to magnetic north and south. |

The GPS satellites are geostationary. They keep a constant position in relation to the Earth's surface. The compass doesn't really "know" where the physical North is. It aligns to the planet's magnetic field. You have to previously know the declination for the place you are at in order to know where North is. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 907170 United States 03/30/2011 10:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The guy on the first video is using a binder - which is a coil - to support the lid of the compass! LOL Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1318088Which means that the compass is being influenced by the metal coil. What a "scientific" experiment! That's what I thought too. |

Your compass is a testimony of that. With the help of the appropriate instrumentation, you can measure both the direction and intensity of the local magnetic field. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1313800 United States 03/30/2011 11:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's what I think. We have a powerful magnetic source approaching our planet in the form of our Sun's binary companion. It is exerting more and more influence over the core of the Earth as it approaches - the inverse-square law. This is changing our magnetic poles at an exponentially increasing rate - they are moving faster and faster. THAT has caused our planet's mantle and crust to 'detach' somewhat from the molten and magnetic core, and now our geographic poles and equator are changing - we are wobbling on our axis. Watch the moon and check astronomy programs to see what it SHOULD look like in your location - you will see it doesn't match sometimes. And have you noticed people reporting a rumbling sound, from all around the world? I think that's the Earth's core grinding against the mantle and crust as the Earth goes through this change. Now, once the brown dwarf leaves the area, taking its powerful magnetic field with it, we may AGAIN see this same sort of thing happen as the Earth re-orients itself to our traditional Sun's magnetic field. What would you expect to see happen if our geographic axis is being altered? High winds with or without storms, GPS inaccuracies, compass aberrations, 'rogue waves' coming out of nowhere, abnormally high and low tides, a Moon that doesn't match what it used to look like for its phase, sinkholes in areas near our traditional equator, lithosphere tears near areas that weren't near our traditional equator but are now closer to our new equator. Well, guess what? We are seeing ALL of those things. Make of this what you will. |

I have seen fields of steel pilling driven into the ground around 30' that would generate a magnetic field as far as 20' or so away. Just happened to have a compass out that day. |
