Has anyone here ever taken Erythromycin Powder for Fish, for themselves?
hi group!-

i have a nasty throat infection, probably strep, can't afford a doctor right now. i've been told by several people that humans can take fish antibiotics, and internet posts seem to support that, but all they had at my local PetSmart were the powder packets....brand is Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, "EM Erythromycin" powder packets, 200mg each.

PLEASE don't reply if you're gonna tell me about colloidal silver, oregano, etc etc etc.

i only want to hear from you if you've taken this product, or one similar to it, yourself, or know someone who has.

thanks!!

Cant give first hand knowledge on the Ethromycin, but I was once in about your situation, spent my last money on the Dr, who gave me a scrip for tetracyclin.

I had some old stuff, but this is an important thing, do not trusted post dated tetracyclin. Almost all the cyclins can be safely used well beyond their expiration dates with just reduced potentcy, except tetracyclin, it breaks down into toxic compounds!

I took a look at what they had at the pet store, and the caps were dated, and looked EXACTLY like the old prescription.

I took them as the Dr recommended, got better, and suffered no adverse effects of any kind.

I strongly suspect that the pet fish version caps are exactly the same as the genuine pharma grade stuff, just packaged different, but for all I know it could be the stuff they spilled on the floor and broomed up...

I think that there is only a few plants that make the compound, and they just package it appropriate for the market where it can sell, same compound and purity in all cases.

Cant say I have positve knowledge though..

a LOT of people swear by Fish Mox (amoxycillin for fish) but my local PetSmart only had the powdered form of several antibiotics, including Erythromycin. since that is the antibiotic of choice for strep, that is what i got. just want to make sure there are not harmful fillers. it says 'acitve ingredient: 200mg Erythromycin per packet, and the human dose for strep is 250 to 400mg every 6 hours for us ....

Hello there.

I reccomend finding the tablets on Ebay. (Fish Mycin). You want to look for the 250mg tablets and take 1.5 tablets (375mg) 3 times a day for 10 days. That will take care of your strep. Look for a product that is sold from the united states and is labled USP. (United States Pharmacopeia). These items are labeled for aquatic use only and can be sold with out perscription for fish or bird use. There are many antibiotics out there. In terms of safety, they are the same exact product as the tablets put into the bottle labled for humans, they just have a label that says they are for fish. But many times they come off the same production lot and from the same factory as the human labeld product. Im a nurse and I have used these before and have no problems telling people to do so if they have no insurance. I know this message is late for the original poster, but I hope others will find it helpful. Go shopping on Ebay or Amazon.

I've been taking the powder erythromycin for a couple days now and it works quite well. Only problem is it takes horrendous (that may be an under-statement). If you mix it with some lemon juice and sugar, it goes down a little easier though.

Yes I have bought it off of ebay but I bought the plan penicillin and Amoxicillin. it is the same stuff you get from the Doctor but they can sell it if they say it is only for fish. Works i have bought extra and put it back in case Doom would happen also. I took 1 3times a day for a week, knocked the infection right out. But donr take all the time or your body will get used to it and it wont work as with any antibiotic

Re: Has anyone here ever taken Erythromycin Powder for Fish, for themselves?
I've been taking E.M. erythromicin by API for a few days now because I had a nasty little sinus infection. I'm allergic to penicillin and it's what my doctor has prescribed in the past. My opionion has always been that going to the doctor when you have a bacterial infection is rediculous especially when you can simply go to a pharmacy in other countries and have the pharmacist give you a prescription for penicillin, tetracycline, erythromicin, etc. I coulndn't find pill form erythromicin at any pet store so I purchased the powder form in the fish isle and it works like a champ. I'm feeling much better and have had no adverse reactions. The only thing is I have to take it wish a chaser so I usually use some mouthwash directly after taking the erythromicin. It's great to know about this and I would have no hesitation to do this again in the future. IT DOES WORK PEOPLE!

Fish Mox...I have taken it for strep throat.

1,000 mg. a day for 10 days.

You will have "the runs" and feel tired, but it will clear up an infection.

I bought the mox from Amazon.

Good luck.

Powder? Order some antibiotics from vet stores online in capsule or tablet form. It's pharmaceutical grade stuff. Order what you know about...something that you've taken before...google it to see what it's for.

If the powder is all you have, put it in some orange juice or something and drink it. Measure it CAREFULLY. google dossage amount.

Re: Has anyone here ever taken Erythromycin Powder for Fish, for themselves?
OK, let's see if we can make this more focused and allow you to help yourself.

Science is an inquiry based discipline. That means you find out some things from a mentor but then immediately begin researching and verifying the passed along information. You must also test your hypothesis that you do indeed have Strep Throat.

In a physician's office, they can do a rapid Strep test. You can't. That's unfortunate because one can become serious if it goes to your heart. In fact, that does happen to many people over time. If you decide to take that macrolide (for that is what erythomycin is) then you need to be observant, make sure you have the symptoms, treat it, measure if it is getting better over time, and then if NOT, then to be honest with your physician about your self-treatment.

Here's what Strep throat looks like:

It makes sense to remove this by gentle salt water washing in addition to taking any medicine...right? You clean a wound you don't just leave debris in there.

Never rinse it and swallow, for that carries the infection down into the throat on onwards.

Look at this website and see what bacteria this macrolide treats. What are the contraindications for taking it? If you have those because you take medicines already, have pre-existing conditions, have trouble with certain things happening, then don't take that specific medicine. Make sense? There is no one size fits all medicine for people all have unique things going on. It might be that a different medicine might be better.

[link to www.drugs.com]

WebMD is an authoritative site used by medical students and physicians and other medical staff. Use it yourself. See this list describing when to take anitbiotics and when not to. It also lists a protocol i.e. a logical order that a physician will use as a guideline to treat a specific illness, but that only works based upon the patient, the patient's history, availability of the medicine, and contraindications.

Some antibiotics can hurt a fetus. If there is any chance that you are pregnant, then you need to take that into account as well for any medications.

Some antibiotics have side effects. How many women having taken antibiotics reduce helpful bacteria in their body and THEN get a urinary infection? A lot. It can also knock down your helpful gut bacteria and make you sick with another infection too.

Don't think of your body as a machine. It is an incredibly complex organism. It's not do this and that happens.

I know you want a simple answer. It would be better for you to actively investigate this NOW, then under less than ideal circumstances is YOU end up the healer for your family.

Here's one WebMD link for choosing an antibiotic for Strep Throat.
[link to www.webmd.com]

Also go here, and step by step, read the posts, and see which things diagnose your condition, and then decide which medicines to use.
[link to www.mayoclinic.com]

[link to www.mayoclinic.com]

As you can see, erithromycine is not among the first choices. Frequently, a physician will use amoxicilin with clavulonic acid because this combination works better against some drug resistant strains.

[link to www.medicinenet.com]

It is sometimes labeled as Augmentin.

Here's an example of a protocol for dealing with Strep Throat (they just made it sound more complicated).

[link to www.aafp.org]

Especially take note of this image which deals with antibiotic choices. That diverges based upon penicillin allergy.
[link to www.aafp.org]

Today in very bad cases where nothing is responding, if the patient can tolerate penicillin, the vancomysin (think V for vanquish) which kills most everything. That's good because it kills the infection. That's terrible because count upon another infection later since you also killed the good bacteria too.

Re: Has anyone here ever taken Erythromycin Powder for Fish, for themselves?
When choosing the antibiotic, then one must be concerned about compliance.

Compliance can be variable due to price. If it's expensive and the patient might not take it or all of it, then they could end up far sicker as the infection spreads. A noncompliant patient is the NORM. Patients assume they know more than the healer. Worse, they spread their illness to the noninfected like the caregiver or their coworkers or their children.

Sometimes due to the serious nature of the infection and compliance (for maybe they cannot risk missing work or you can't be sure they will follow through) then an IV drug is given.

Why? Any time you take an oral medicine, you're counting upon the patient taking it following directions(with food or not, at the right time, taking all of it) as well as it getting into their system fast enough.

The way your body digests food (or medicine for that matter), it breaks down some in the stomach and on further in your system by the applications of enzymes and acids. As that happens the liver (which acts as a filter) say, "Hey, that substance is NOT supposed to be there. Absorb it." It does this over time, and so it eventually gets overwhelmed or overcapacity in its filtering. This is called the "first-pass effect".

That means it takes time to get that antibiotic in your system to a threshold that will then be able to act upon that bacteria. Take an IV drug, and it goes around the liver and dumps it into the bloodstream. It then can act faster. If you have a serious infection, then you waste time by oral medication.

I know you don't want to hear about natural remedies but I have kicked so many sinus, ear and bronchial infections with Echinacea tea and song garlic pills. My kids too. Garlic is a natural antibiotic that works on most of those upper respiratory infections. So it's goldenseal and the two together are even better. I'm taking aquatic erythromycin right now for gastroparesis. I read that it helps the stomach work better.

I but the powder packets and empty them into capsules myself. Eliminates that nasty taste and heels me up quickly. I only use it when I have a serious infection. I think it works better than prescriptions because of the water intake. There is no way we are going to drink a fishtank full of water a few times a day. Happy with fishy meds.

try tractor supply, farm supply type stores (tractor supply is actual name of a chain store across USA)

they have a lot of animal antibiotics you don't need a prescription to get them .. some are on the counters , no problem purchasing. others (esp ones that are injected) are in glass cases, you have to ask store employees to get them. maybe they take down your name if you buy those, im not sure.

Re: Has anyone here ever taken Erythromycin Powder for Fish, for themselves?
Years ago when I had virtually no money I bought "fish" and "bird" antibiotics ... but always in PILL form.

The stuff I bought was always ended up being from one of the big pharmaceutical manufacturers, not some company from India, and worked just fine, it was just close to it's expiration date (but not expired) when I bought it from a vet supply house. Since it was ALWAYS from one of the big US companies I imagine it was off the same production line as that being packaged for human consumption since for a big company it wouldn't make sense for them to utilize different manufacturing techniques for pets versus humans once they had their production process and machines set up.

THREE issues to consider:

Get a medical diagnostic guide as to WHAT and HOW MUCH antibiotics to use to treat different common ailments.

Get a good diagnostic guide as to diagnosing different common ailments.

Be ready to get thyself to a REAL Doctor in the event that your self treatment isn't working OR you get any indication at all about an adverse reaction.

(this assumes that the antibiotic you get is from a reputable US based large pharmaceutical company).

TODAY you can now go the "Little Clinics" that are inside of some of the major drug store or grocery store chains and see a nurse practitioner for about $35-$40 and then get REAL people antibiotics for about $10, or in some cases just $5. That is a safer way to go and the overall pricing at about $50 for the visit AND the antibiotics is very reasonable.

(I personally would NOT like to use a powder because of the "dosing" issue and measuring it out properly, even though it may be from same manufacturer as the one who makes the pills)
