Re: Why cant Americans pronounce "craig"??
You are absolutely right and the reason is Americans tend to be sloppy with their enunciation. I always try to say "Crage".

Apologies for my asshole countrymen and their assholish remarks.

I always thought they were trying to "greg".

the name you hear is greg not craig

Nope - I thought that too. They're definitely trying to say "Craig" in a special-bus way.

Cray-ger. But say it fast, one syllable, and the 'ger' like in an exclamation mark. Not "kreg".
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1322204

There is no er in craig!

I think most people pronounce it Crayg.

Otherwise it would sound too much like Greg.

"Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither"
--Benjamin Franlkin

No one ever said freedom was safe. Upon true understanding of the concepts of freedom, you shall realize that freedom is the most dangerous choice of lifestyle. There are no guarantees in freedom but those one provides for themselves, at their own will. True freedom comes with extreme personal risk. Are you willing to take the risk?

It took me ages to actually realise that Americans were saying Craig. Surely it's 'Cray-g.' Not 'Kreg.' An 'a' and an 'i' together doesn't make an 'e.' Kreg sounds like a German name for something. Kreg is a bit of a strange pronunciation... bsflag

Re: Why cant Americans pronounce "craig"??
Silly thread, most places have their own pronunciation for things and it does not make it wrong, just different, stop being so uptight, there is not single English lanquage, not even inside the borders of England.. Around here the town of Selmeston is pronounced as though it was spelt Simpson, and it is not wrong. So tounge

No, the whole English-speaking world, plus the whole non-English speaking world, here 'Kreg' when most Americans speak the name Craig.

It is a modern day mystery that will never be solved.

Yes it is true that is how they say it. The other one I hate is height, they always say heightH, there is no H on the end of that word. It is getting to the stage now where they are making up their own language. Things like "he pleaded guilty", it is pled guilty, even newscasters are saying it.

p.s. I think the OP was using phonetic spelling. I'm guessing had he/she used "Cray-g" people would then retort that craig is not pronounced "cray gee"...
