| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1323512 04/01/2011 10:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay, let's have a go. Let's find out what we can about the carrier: [link to en.wikipedia.org] "According to the FBI, McCormick was 41 when he died. He was a high school dropout, but was able to read and write and was said to be “street smart.” According to members of his family, McCormick had used such encrypted notes since he was a boy, but apparently no one in his family knows how to decipher the codes. Investigators believe the notes in McCormick’s pockets were written up to three days before his death." Let's see some other codes he carried. even if unsolved, they would give a glimpse into his life. Like I said, IMO being "street smart" would indicate a nefarious lifestyle. I would bet that his codes would have to be brute-force attacked and with a little luck you may be able to stumble upon the one-time-pad he used. Find out more about the man and what he did in his life and you may have a jump point. |

What good will a jpeg picture do, look at a raving mad mans the vain scribblings. Sarcasm aside, consider the period this document was written and the available popular crypto systems used at the time and obscuring software used on bulletin boards systems like ROT-13 ect. I believe at the time, PGP hobbyists were creating substitution/permutation tables to speak over the phone phonetically with the ability to save in note books. This was being done prior to the invention of PGP phone. |

Something in this guys past sparked him into using codes so he might be using a system prior to the electronic era. His key obviously something personal to him but easy to compute in some transposition or substitutional way by table or geometric shape or something based on a Vernam cipher. The NSA even has a website for grade school kids with the methods suggested. IT'S a ONE TIME PAD. Yes, it is personal. No, you cannot use the methods you suggest with any success, esp a Boolean Vernam on a one-time-pad... |

What good will a jpeg picture do, look at a raving mad mans the vain scribblings. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1250935Actually, I would prefer the jpeg. In this case, the circling of text body may indicate something that cannot be transcribed. Look at the way it is circled. Is it by a right-handed person ? Was the carrier of the message a "lefty" ? Little nuances that even a computer would pick up on are invaluable. Look at the indentation of certain paragraphs and the similarity of the 3 lines. Do they look like steps, directions, coordinates ? There is something there, but only the creator of this may know. Even the carrier, if he did not write it may not know, as it looks like, with all the effort put into it is not a straight linear code that can be broken by traditional attack. Find out more about the man. If he hasn't assigned a random string for his one-time pad, then maybe there is a clue in his personality. I said before that this smells nefarious. Why ? FBI Laboratory Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit 2501 Investigation Parkway Quantico, VA 22135 Attn: Ricky McCormick Case Also, it may be a job interview for the alpha agency. They used to do it with crossword puzzles in the local papers... |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 18168347 08/07/2012 08:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | there's a good reason nobody has been able to work it. not only cyphered, but also "compressed" words (like court reporter words), as well as deliberate mis-spellings. even if you crack it, it'll look like gobbldy gook unless you know his "shorthand" spellings. ill bet his "key" is a book, with a preordained progression of pages and paragraphs. the first 26 characters of the line become a cypher line alphabet. he did it since he was a kid, he was 41 in '99, so no electronic/cyber based encryption. id guess some kids book that would be easily memorized, like a dr seuss or similar. the second page is a "to do" list (all completed). a braindead simple cypher, but impossible to crack without clues. |
