Stephen Harper to phase out metric system
by Sympatico.ca Staff
The Canadian Government will phase out the metric system if all goes according to plan, sources say.

Beginning later this year, select Canadian regions will officially switch over to the imperial system, which already holds considerable strength south of the border.

The move is purportedly designed to enhance Canada-U.S. business relations which have declined in light of the recent economic crisis. Compounding the problem is Canada's strong dollar, which has also wreaked havoc on Canadian exporters.

"The metric system is certainly holding us back in some cases," said one anonymous senior business analyst.

"The amount of time spent converting our units into American units adds an extra layer of work for many cross-border transactions. We're starting to see cases where companies are re-thinking Canadian partnerships."

In order to make the transformation as smooth as possible, there would likely be a phased approach.

Beginning late 2011, select Canadian regions will measure all weights in pounds as opposed to kilograms.

By early 2012, these same regions will begin to use miles instead of kilometres, and gallons instead of litres to enable more U.S.-friendly gas prices.

By the end of 2012, test regions will have switched from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Re: Stephen Harper to phase out metric system
It is phased out.

Ask anyone how big their house is and they will tell you in square feet.
Ask anyone how tall they are and they will tell you in feet and inches.

Walk into any hardware store and k for a two-by-four.
Thats inches. Not centimeters.

Thirty years of fail.

Oh, but the temperatures and speed limit signs are changes!

Metric is great for precision machining and making parts.

Si is better for architecture. Just my opinion.

Re: Stephen Harper to phase out metric system
Metric system is completely stupid and makes no sense.

Everyone says, "Oh, it makes more sense because it is all in base TEN".

Do you all think that over the thousands of years of civilization, NO ONE EVER NOTICED THEY HAVE TEN FINGERS AND ALL COUNTING IS IN BASE TEN?

Ask yourself why, then, has nothing ever been measured in a base ten system?

Why doesn't your watch have ten hours on it, one hundred minutes in an hour, one hundred minutes in a second? Huh? Think about it.

Why aren't there 100 degrees in a circle?

Everything has always been done in twelve, eight, or sixty. Why? BECAUSE IT IS MUCH EASIER TO WORK WITH.

Tell me quick, what is one third of a liter? An irrational number. What is one quarter? OOPS>

Metric was implemented to scam the public by confusing them with illogical math to make them believe they were getting more for less, when in fact, we were given less that cost more.

Wickedness personified!

how many feet in a mile? 5280

how many meters in a kilometer? I just told you.

although Canadians use imperial for most daily and simple functions, its a shity system. ask someone whats larger 9/32 or 18/64, if you really want to puzzle them ask 36/128.

Re: Stephen Harper to phase out metric system
I am amazed ... absolutely amazed!

The metric system is one of the few "on the surface" differences between English Speaking Canada and the United States. They must truly be preparing for full integration with the US when French Speaking Quebec finally goes it's separate way.

I wonder how many states they will demand to become when they join the US?

Ontario clearly should be at least two states, maybe as many as four (when Texas joined the United States it was given the option to later separate itself into up to 5 separate states). Most of the other provinces and territories could remain intact and jsut switch to becoming states.

The last big hurdle is the Canadian Health Care System. If that problem is solved they could voluntarily join the US in just a matter of months!! There would be no need for the US to invade! (though John Candy in "American Bacon" gave us the blueprint!)

1/3 of a liter irrational? Now that's really irrational! Go back to school and learn some math. You just proved why you probably never will understand any system...
