An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N913AN performing flight AA-547 from Washington National,DC to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 134 passengers and 6 crew, stopped climb out of Washington at FL280 due to complaints about bad quality of cabin air but continued towards Chicago.

About 25 minutes later still at FL280 and about 130nm east of Dayton,OH, however, the crew decided to divert to Dayton reporting a number of people needed medical attention. The airplane landed safely about another 25 minutes later.

Five people aboard needed medical attention at the airport, one flight attendant and three passengers were taken to a hospital.

wow!! radioactive isotopes pulled in from the atmosphere contaminated the passenger cabin recycling over and over microwaving the passengers lungs.

i wonder what the common denominator between the six passengers were. were they in the same area? suffering from illness already? they would probably be taken to a sterile room for precaution. i mean they can't rule out anything. if it was a flu it wouldn't have hit them so quick. it had to be something particular in the air. quality of air. lack of air. ugh. makes me even more freaked to fly.

The latest news here in Dayton is that they haven't been released yet and some have been transported by helicopter to the local Air Force Base.

A sterile room is meant to be a secure room. The ticket counters at most airports are on the non secure side. These would be non sterile. After going through the raping by TSA you then enter the sterile side of the airport. So this room they are being kept in is on the secure side of the terminal. AA is ferrying an aircraft to pick them up and continue their flight. Sounds like the airport is trying to keep them from having to reenter through security screening along with all their bags.

At least two people have left the hospital and went home. Maybe somebody should call and ask them.

It sounds like there was a known problem with the air filtration, a crew tried to fix it, but didn't.

Hope I'm not sounding too practical.

Radiation sickness

"cause of the illnesses is unknown" Hypoxia isnt an illness. Not sure if anyone else here has been through reduced atmosphere training. But everything described sounds just like hypoxia. I have seen everything from convulsions, to unconsciousness, to some of the funniest, goofiest behavior in a reduced atmosphere chamber.

No such thing as a "sterile room" at an airport.

I got feeling some kind of bio-chemical was released on the plane... Radiation wouldn't make the people sick that fast nor would they have sterile rooms for the passengers, on other flights that went to through radiation they just let the people go.... Why would this plane be different?

The director of Dayton International Airport says the pilot alerted the airport Friday morning that some passengers were complaining about air quality.

Director Terrence Slaybaugh says Flight 547 was traveling from Reagan National in Washington, D.C., to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

Slaybaugh says one passenger had an asthma attack. That passenger and two others were taken to a hospital for treatment. He didn't know their conditions.

He says the plane had about 140 people on board, including the crew.

All 132 people on Flight 547 from Reagan National in Washington, D.C., to Chicago's O'Hare Airport walked off the Boeing 737 after it landed at Dayton International Airport, but two passengers and a flight attendant were taken to hospitals, airline spokesman Ed Martelle said.

The two passengers were able to return to the airport and accompanied their fellow passengers on a replacement plane to Chicago. The flight attendant was admitted for overnight observation, airline spokesman Tim Smith said.

Christina Saull, a passenger from Washington, said there had been problems with the air conditioning and cabin-pressurization system before the plane took off, and maintenance personnel went into the cockpit of the plane on the ground in Washington, the Dayton Daily News reported.

If you faint or go unconscious, do you crap all over yourself? I am just wondering because that would be really embarrassing.

Seriously, there aren't even "sterile" rooms in the Surgical Department of hospitals so that is not actually correct terminology as the Operating Rooms are cleaned after each proceduer per strict procedures (guidelines are set & enforced w/ inspections by various agencies) but the room itself is not actually sterilized like the instruments and other items that are used have been.

I know this as I used to be the Director of Surgery prior to retirement.. many years.

I think there may be rooms close to be sterilie in the microchip industries, like an inner sanctum type environment.

Regarding the airport, likely they have a room designated as ISOLATION which is part of their emergency/disaster response plan... some of you that work at airports can probably confirm this ... or later will call a cohort who was nurse for American Airlines @ DFW.

Also, could be that the isolation has something called LAMINAR AIR FLOW but I doubt they would spend that kind of $$$ to instal such a system (used for Respiratory Isolation = contagious cases in hospitals but often there are not enough such rooms available anyhow. Laminar is reverse flow where air is drawn into that room via negative pressure then ventilated to the outside of building through special conduits. Perhaps the Airport's ISOLATION area has been simply rigged where it has windows to open or its own AC system separate from the rest of the building ???

One thing's for certain --- each day now it is becoming more obvious that news is being tightly controlled, very stories, if any about the Japan situation, very very brief mention is made and then story switched to talk like rescuing a dog floating in the water today near the EQ zone. Oh ... and on CBS Evening News + ABC too that I watched switching back & forth , never a word about radiation in the USA --- like "out of sight / keep off the news totally = out of public mind" so everyone without internet or not on boards such as this one has not a clue of what is really happening.
