Wow I can't believe how long this thread has become! When I created this thread I wasn't sure anyone would even be interested ~ LOL! I am happy that so many have joined in to contribute their knowledge and ideas about iodine, it is such INVALUABLE information! Thank you for all of your input! I have learned so many new things!

I come here often and post info or bump this thread (although you'd never know it because I have had 4 different ID's assigned to me since this thread started ... 1272383, 1327840, 1378178, 1400841) so that others can see this important info. I'm sure other AC's have had this same thing happen to them so I'm not sure how many individual contributors there are. LOL ~ I've been here! And I have several different ID's as well - 2 or 3 AC id's and my "official" id SleepyNightOwl. :) I come on here and post a little something every once in a while, mostly I am researching! Interestingly, I recently suggested to my mom's doctor that she be checked for hypothyroidism. He seemed reluctant but "humored" me. Turns out her TSH was 6.24 (their labs state the reference range is 0.45 - 4.50). As far as I and her lab results are concerned, she is hypothyroid but he didn't think so! He said her TSH level was "at the upper end of normal" WTH???!! How is 6.24 normal when the max reference range is 4.5? WHY??? Why do doctors do this??? It frustrates me beyond belief!

gaah

Oh well! Thank God for iodine! I am so glad I know what I know! :) And to think, just a few months ago I had not one clue about anything regarding the topic of thyroid or iodine. She has now began taking one 12.5 mg Iodoral tab per day (starting out slow). To be correct, what we actually take is not Iodoral, but an identical product called i-Throid. It's a little bit cheaper than Iodoral. You can purchase a bottle of 90 tabs for only $15.95 - this price includes shipping! [link to www.pureformulas.com]

I use Iodized salt. Get it at the store. A lot of salts are not iodized so look on the box.

I just recently had my thyroid checked as well and my naturopath (thought he knew everything/not so) said that mine was normal also...but I've found that these tests are worthless!

Here is a video about Dr. Mark Starr and type 2 hypothyroidism. I think this will help you in your battle with the docs.

I've been taking Iodine for 9 months now! Sometimes really high doses (mostly SSKI ie Potassium IoDIDE)to help remove toxins. Will be sharing this info with my doctor soon.

Do you ever visit curezone's Iodine Supplementation (not support)Forum. There is a wealth of info there and people who have been supplementing with Iodine for at least 4 years!

According to the endocrinologist normal is now UNDER 2. SO, your mother needs to see another doctor.

Also, I have been researching iodine ever since this came out. It looks like iodine can be helpful for most conditions, except DURING hashimotos thyroiditis. (Because that is an active inflammation is my guess, and the iodine would cause it to be more inflammed. As it begins to work.) I had thyroiditis, but I think that is better. I am starting on iodine. I will let you know how it goes. I have to do something. All I want to do is sleep. :(

I think I've read or heard something about a protocol of supplements that should be started before adding Iodine to those with Hashimotos ... when done Iodine is not an issue. Could be wrong about that...but if so I'm thinking it was during Dr. Mark Starr's interview.

I'm with you...my biggest issue is sleep!

I'm now on a green smoothies fast reboot (day 26)

And have added coffee enema's also. Feel like I'm dying lol from all the detox I'm doing but I'm hoping this will do something to reclaim my sleep!

Re: IODINE - What they DON'T tell us about this MIRACLE nutrient! UNBELIEVABLE!
Wow! I just started learning about iodine (ironically) about a week prior to the Japan EQ due to a suspected thyroid issue. I ran across a website last night that has such unbelievable info about iodine. WHY don't "they" tell us this info??! This should be common knowledge! Instead they push drugs and tell us we have disorders when really we have deficiencies!!!

Check out the site.

[link to docs.google.com]

The info is given in a slide-show type presentation and is very easy to read. You will be shocked and PO'd! I was anyhow. After reading this info, I realized that THEY started taking away the potassium iodide / potassium iodine LONG before 3-3-11 !!!

Iodine was once a common ingredient in many foods such as bread. In the 1980's, iodine was removed from our breads and REPLACED with Bromine. Bromine worsens iodine-deficiency problems because it INHIBITS absorption of iodine in the body! It is also a known CARCINOGEN.

Iodine is a body detoxifier! It has been proven to detoxify the body by flushing the following harmful substances out of the body:

– Bromine
– Fluoride
– Chlorine
– Mercury
– Lead
– Aluminum
– Cadmium

Iodine deficiency is linked to the following:

– Thyroid disease
– Prostate cancer
– Breast cancer
– Ovarian cancer
– Endometrial cancer
– Ovarian cysts
– Fibrocystic Breast Disease
- Fibromyalgia (strong evidence supports fibromyalgia is simply iodine deficiency)

Iodine is cancer's ENEMY! “Iodine is not toxic to normal cells but IS toxic to cancer cells!”

In addition to causing cancer, an iodine deficiency will cause existing cancer to be more aggressive. Iodine is responsible for CONTROLLED cell death - a normal, necessary function of out bodies. Iodine plays a HUGE role in keeping cells in check so they don't grow out of control and overtake the body. Cancer cells are cells that keep growing and don't die! (thus lumps/tumors)

Iodine deficiency seems like a logical explanation for cancer!

Coincidentally, Japanese women have lower rates of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers as well as fibrocystic breast disease. Go figure! Their diets are loaded with iodine from fish and seaweed!

WHY ISN’T IODINE PART OF THE STANDARD TREATMENT FOR CANCER?

Iodine supplementation improves / cures the following:

- Thinning hair / hair loss
– Fatigue / tiredness
– Feeling cold
– Brain fog / memory problems
- Muscle pain
- Basically all symptoms of hypothyroidism!

Unbelievable! Please read the site as there is so much more than what I've shared here. I am buying some Iodoral ASAP - not just for protection against radiation, but for everything explained at that site!

I have read (from Dr. Brownstein) that the worsening of symptoms experienced by people with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis when they take iodine is due to a Selenium deficiency. The thyroid needs iodine to create thyroid hormones, but it also requires Selenium. Some people with thyroid conditions have an iodine deficiency, some have a selenium deficiency, others have both. Do a Google search for

"Dr. Brownstein +iodine"
"Dr. Brownstein +selenium"

He is one of the best when it comes to iodine info. There are several very lengthy write-ups on iodine, selenium, misc. supplement studies performed by Dr. Brownstein and the other iodine docs Dr. Abrams and Dr. Fetchas. You can read the official reports on the Optimox website: [link to www.Optimox.com]

I wish you luck and I hope you feel better soon! I know how it is to want to sleep all day, I have narcolepsy. I am okay as long as I have my medication though (Provigil). I do have a sneaking suspicion that narcolepsy is somehow related to iodine deficiency, fluoridated water (I grew up on city water, always drank tons of water), bromide consumption (bread, pastries), chlorine (basically lived in a swimming pool). I noticed more alertness and energy shortly after starting on iodine.

Yes, I do go to the Cure-Zone site! That is a great and very informative site! Many knowledgeable people there. I have told several people about the site. I have never taken straight SSKI other than when you mix iodine tabs or Lugol's with vitamin C, is it basically the same thing? Do you find straight SSKI works better that Lugol's/Iodoral? The best I ever felt was when I first started on iodine in March 2011 and I did not know Lugol's mixed with vitamin C created potassium iodide.

I forgot to mention in my other reply to you that I have read that endocrinologists say 2 should be the new upper limit. I tried to convince MY doctor last year when she suspected me of being hypothyroid. I told her that the new UL is 3.0 and many endos are trying to change it to 2.0. She just said that their lab does use the newest lab values for TSH (their upper limit is 4.5 - lol). Same goes for my mom's doctor, identical story.

That is why I gave up on going to the doctor for anything unless I am dying, need stitches, x-ray for broken bones, appendicitis, etc. Other than that, I think I will fix it myself, thank-you-very-much. And this is coming from someone who went to school to be an RN.

Re: IODINE - What they DON'T tell us about this MIRACLE nutrient! UNBELIEVABLE!
Here are some thoughts I had and discoveries I made after noticing I had more energy and alertness shortly after starting on iodine.

(I have narcolepsy and I take Provigil for it)

Here is a thought:

The other name for Provigil (the narcolepsy drug) is

Modafinil

After I started taking iodine I could get away with taking less of my narcolepsy meds. I wondered if possibly they derive some of the ingredients of Provigil from seaweed (remember seaweed contains iodine), or maybe it has iodine in it.

So I did some Googling and whaddaya know...Provigil (Modafinil) does contain a form of iodine!

Not only that....... get this!

I found a type of brown seaweed you can order online named

Modifilan

Hmmmmmmmmm......Rearrange the letters - all the same letters as in the word Modafinil. Ever notice how they tend to name drugs after some significant thing related to what it's made from, or who it's made by?

Modafinil
Modifilan

Too similar for me to call it a coincidence. Not only that, people were saying (in a forum) they use this stuff to stay awake! And it gives them tons of energy. One woman also said she took a little too much and couldn't fall asleep that night, stayed up cleaning the house instead. She said it was not at all pleasant though, in that high of a dose. So apparently it is powerful. I am convinced it has something to do with the narcolepsy drug. (that costs $1,400.00 per month!) The seaweed is only like $27.00 for a large bottle. I am going to buy some to try it and see if it's like my medication. I will write back here with my results.

Me too. I've been reading about iodine all night, last stop was a check on glp, and amazinly, this thread!

I was diagnosed with a goiter years ago, ansd put on a generic synthroid. I kept telling the doctor I was still exhausted, and losing my hair, other problems. Eventually I was sent to a dermatologist that referred me to a specialist. After extensive tests the specialist asked me why in the world did my doctor have me on synthroid??

I called my family doctor about this, and was told to just stop it. They never told me you aren't supposed to suddently stop it!

Long story, I'm finally waking up to the importance of this mineral.

And bumping for anyone else new to this like me!

Re: IODINE - What they DON'T tell us about this MIRACLE nutrient! UNBELIEVABLE!
I just bought some Iodoral, 180 pills. It's 12.5mg of iodine. I have all the symptoms for hypothyroidism. I have fibromyaglia. I did have depression, but cutting all fast food, soda, beef, pork, and increasing my veggie and fruit consumption wiped it all away.

I have PCOS, too. That's the main reason I am taking the iodine. I've read I should start taking one pill, than increase to 4 pills, being 50g of iodine. Now I eat seaweed snacks, and sometimes I make sushi. Should I lower the amount due to this? Or lower when I am eating them that day?

And bumping for anyone else new to this like me!

synthroid or whatever equivalent on top of hypothyroid is a horrible condition and a few other friends that i know who also developed hyPo thyroid DID JUST THAT --they just stopped that med and are still alright though still appearing with severe hypothyroid according to their "numbers"--they don't bother with iodine either.

i'm doing the vitamins etc and about 3 months ago started with lugols but went through hell with what i found out were detox symptoms--headaches were INCREDIBLE..SO i switched to the iodoral tablets and toughed it out
and take 2 for 4 days on and 3 days off
and sometimes feel great and some days feel like crap and still take the synthroid as well-
i really believe the manufacurers of the synthroid have QUALITY issues as again--sometimes feel OK and other times almost dead.
i want to be finished with the synthroid.
been on them for about ten years NOW and very sorry that i didn't know about the iodine as i would have simply corrected it THEN instead of eating a synthetic POS that most likely has put the thyroid asleep the ssame way continuous use of cortisone/prednisone shuts off the adrenals.

Re: IODINE - What they DON'T tell us about this MIRACLE nutrient! UNBELIEVABLE!
hi! I'm new here and have to post to this thread because although there's a lot of accurate and helpful info...there's also some that's not so. Some of you may even get upset with me for what I'm going to write.

If you have a normal functioning thyroid...think you may be deficient (without being tested 1st!) have been taking extra iodine and clearly notice that it makes you feel better, a sense of well-being and perhaps even lost weight and this is further proof that you have a deficiency....please consider the facts and consequences of what may happen in years to come from doing this.

If you think you actually may be deficient, have a goiter, etc., (btw have you ever seen pics of people, mostly from 3rd world countries who have a goiter from iodine deficiency??...their goiters/thyroid hanging down onto their chests???) get tested!!! The test will show your levels from over the past 6 months.

Why do you feel so much better -for those of you who aren't allergic/sensitive and have normal functioning thyroids? It's because the iodine is accumulating in the thyroid and revving up the thyroid in order to metabolize the iodine. It's not because you weren't getting enough iodine or were deficient.

Eventually, perhaps a decade or so of taking extra iodine...your thyroid is going to fail (Hashimoto's..which is also from consuming too much soy. That's why it was 1st identified and prevalent in Japan. The RDA of 150mcg of iodine is to assure not only that you get enough...but that you don't get too much!!!

Most multi-vitamins contain enough....which is most likely too much because most people are already getting enough and most likely too much from food already! Vitamin manufacturers add the RDA knowing that it'll make most people feel good and more likely keep buying/using their product.

Unless you have serious digestive issues, an eating disorder, etc., don't eat enough food on a daily basis, are a vegan and not eating enough sources of iodine...your iodine level should be fine!!

Iodine is present in most animal products. It's in milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, etc., even if it's not specifically listed in the product info. It's in the animal feed!! Additionally, hamburger (whether beef or poultry) often contains the animals' thyroid gland in it and since the thyroid gland is where iodine is concentrated...hamburger thus contains more iodine than other meats which do via fortified animal feed.

I mentioned cruciferous veggies...they are goitrogens. Eating too much will also interfere with thyroid function as can other "endocrine disrupters" (iodine, of course) such as BPA, teflon coating (particularly when the chemicals are released via too high heat and/or surface scrapes) and triclosan.

Now what happens regarding iodine intake if you are sensitive/allergic -even if you have a normal-functioning thyroid? First of all....yes people who are allergic to shellfish may get a reaction (often very serious) to the protein in shellfish...but someone with an iodine sensitivity/allergy can get a reaction to the iodine alone...or both the iodine and proteins!!

So what will happen is your sensitive/allergic to iodine and consume the RDA or beyond? You'll develop Grave's Disease!

This happened to me and the doctors made it worse by treating me with radioactive iodine!! I had a horrible anaphylaxic reaction...including the swelling of my salivary glands which was extremely painful.

To find out if you are allergic/sensitive to iodine...a skin patch test using betadine will show this. The reaction will be very quick and result in swelling and intense itching (be ready to flush with water if this happens!). Some medical professionals consider sores that may appear on the skin later (often days)with continued/prolonged application as an allergic reaction...but it's actually the corrosive effects of the iodine.

Yes, corrosive. Too much iodine can kill you and some people have ingested large amounts as a means to commit suicide (and if not treated quickly, this method will result in a fatal outcome).

I'm sorry if I'm squelching anyone's hopes and improved feelings of well being from increasing iodine intake and I can't tell you what to do. You may decide it's worth it in the short time...but in months or even years it will cause the thyroid to malfunction and fail (actually when Hashimoto's 1st starts, the thyroid fluctuates between to high and too low before it fails.

Hashimoto's has become epidemic in the US and research thus far is showing that the American diet, containing too much iodine already -may be the cause of this. The over-consumption of soy alone has also be found to lead to an underactive thyroid (soy is added to almost all processed foods).

And the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture thyroid supplements and the doctors (endocrinologists, mainly) who treat thyroid conditions are very wealthy as a result!! And the endocrinologists will also continually under and over dose patients on thyroid medication so that they have a steady stream of regular patients every 4-6 weeks or so!!

Myself, I don't have a functioning thyroid to accumulate and metabolize iodine so it interferes with my thyroid medication. I am still extremely sensitive/allergic to it so if I've had too much, I need to get treated (Benadryl) and wait it out. A low potassium diet also helps since iodine binds with potassium.

Best wished to all!
