WOW! Now that I think about it, my grandmother did not use salt for many, many years. She used the salt substitute called "No Salt". There is no iodine in that stuff! It's made with some form of potassium.

My grandmother died of breast cancer! An iodine deficiency???

She also had 5 heart attacks!!! Potassium overload???

Hmmmmmmm!!! scratching

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1325387

Sodium balances potassium in the body. Potassium supports heart muscle function. Even though your g'ma took potassium, there was little or no sodium to retain it.
I also know of an older lady who took salt out of her diet and had a heart attack within a short period of time and died.

I've been doing the iodine thearapy sugested by OP for a couple of years now,and yes it does make a difference in how you feel.the only caveat is that where I live, to buy iodine, you have to sign for it,and you aren't allowed to buy more than a certain amount.but swabbing it on a bare area of your skin is an effective and cheap way to end many symptoms such as fatigue and general lethargy.

I am a regular blood donor, and they always swab your arm with iodine prior to sticking the need in. They told me that if you have enough iodine in your body, it stays dark on your skin longer, and your skin will absorb it quickly if you are deficient in it.

Here is a website I stumbled upon a minute ago while doing a Google search for "autoimmune disorder + iodine" ....

[link to www.iodine4health.com]

Great info here too!! They mention the same person "Flechas" that was mentioned in the original site I told about in my 1st post. This site also talks about iodine being excellent for treating autoimmune disorders - as I had suspected!!!

Now this is REALLY getting good!!!!

OP thanks for this thread, it is great! I can also recommend the website stopthethyroidmadness.com, and the book as well.Changed many peoples lives, they have your thyroid answers. And,as far as the absorption test, I'm unconvinced that is the way to test. If you spill a few drops on the marble sink in the bathroom, don't bother to wipe it up, it will be 'absorbed' in a while. Does that mean our bathroom sinks are iodine deficient? So, go by your symptoms pleae. Hahimotos is a whoe different problem, please seek the advice of a natural practitioner!!

OP I just recently found out how amazing Iodine is myself.

Here is what I found out.

The Thyroid Connection

"Perhaps the next greatest cause of constipation, especially in women, is a sluggish thyroid. Because this condition is so common, is not detected accurately by thyroid blood tests, is aggravated by many prescription drugs, and usually goes untreated for years, it is serious indeed.

Most women who suffer from constipation related to sluggish thyroid have other problems as well. They include but are not limited to: being constantly cold, fatigued, overweight, and mentally sluggish, as well as having dry skin and hair, chronic headaches, frequent urination, and a lack of initiative in life.

You can best judge if you suffer from sluggish thyroid by taking your Barnes underarm temperatures. For at least five mornings, simply place the thermometer under your arm for ten minutes immediately upon arising. If your temperature averages below 97.4, you probably suffer from a sluggish thyroid. If your temperatures are below 97.0, even if your thyroid blood tests are normal, you almost assuredly suffer from sluggish thyroid.

The best way to treat this condition is to flush the toxic halogen molecules (which include fluorine, bromine, and chlorine) from your system, while fulfilling your Iodine needs. Toxic amounts of halogen compounds like bromine, which are found in processed foods, can displace healthy iodine levels in your body. The areas where iodine is needed, such as your thyroid, then suffer.

To eliminate the bromine (and other toxic halogens), you need to utilize iodine fulfillment therapy. This therapy supplies the body’s need for iodine until the body begins to finally release and excrete the toxic molecules and incorporate the iodine. This change in halogens (out with the toxic and in with the iodine) can easily be measured with urine tests.

You also don’t have to be bothered taking these measurements. Simply perform the iodine fulfillment procedure, and the thyroid problem will usually resolve without drugs. And if a sluggish thyroid causes your constipation, this problem will also be resolved naturally."

"We have had patients note better bowel function. Patients who have been constipated for over ten years have now noted daily bowel movements."

[link to iodine4health.com]

"The most consistent responses have been improved memory, absence of ‘brain fog,’ regular bowel movements in those who were constipated, and improved skin texture.”

[link to www.optimox.com]

"Whole body sufficiency for iodine correlated well with overall wellbeing, and some subjects could tell when they achieved sufficiency even before knowing the results of the test. Iodine sufficiency was associated with a sense of overall wellbeing, lifting of a brain fog, feeling warmer in cold environments, increased energy, needing less sleep, achieving more in less time, experiencing regular bowel movements and improved skin complexion."

I agree completely. What every one has posted is simply theory. Until you take iodine you have no idea what your body will do with it. It does not come without side effects too. I have a health blog where I talk about what happened to me, but I won't promote it here.

Basically what happened to me, was I took 1 Iodoral tab as prescribed by my natural doctor. Within a month's time my hair started to fall out because it activated my immune system. I had NO hair on the left side of my head for over a year due to Iodoral. I do not recommend it to anyone nowadays and I think jumping on the iodine bandwagon could be very bad for some.

My doctor and I researched EVERY possible remedy. I have taken iodine. It caused my TSH to flare back up from 40 to 60. My PERSONAL experience with hypothyroidism is such that I recommend every person I meet get tested for hypothyroidism. I NEARLY DIED. Do not sit there and tell me you did your research when all you are looking at is ads from naturopaths and iodine companies. Do the research and read the findings of university reports and then come back here and state your opinion. For right now, it is simply your opinion that people should take iodine. I do not fear salt. I use it to taste on all foods. And yes, I use iodized salt.

Idoral comes in two strengths- one for maintenance and one to catch up on a deficiency.

Just taking kelp is not enough to make up for a lack of iodine in the diet.

I agree- everyone should take extra magnesium, vitamin d and no calcium.

 Quoting: Karu

Wow! That is something. I just recently learned that your potassium level has more of an impact on your blood pressure than sodium level does. You're more likely to have high blood pressure if you're deficient in potassium than if you had excess sodium intake. Really interesting.

I found a lot of great info at the Natural News website:

[link to www.naturalnews.com]

Here are a few paragraphs from the site:

"When it comes to lowering blood pressure, potassium packs a powerful punch. Scientists began studying the effects of potassium on high blood pressure as early as 1928. Now a major study of 300 nurses shows that potassium can lower your blood pressure even if it's in the normal range. Good sources of potassium are dried apricots, avocados, dried figs, acorn squash, baked potatoes, kidney beans, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, and bananas. You can also buy potassium supplements. If you're taking a diuretic, your body is getting rid of potassium along with fluid.

For example, a diet low in potassium and high in sodium is associated with high blood pressure. By contrast, a diet high in potassium and low in sodium can protect against elevation of blood pressure. It has become common knowledge that too much salt in our diet may contribute to high blood pressure. Not so commonly known is that high blood pressure is also related to too little potassium in our diet. In fact, restricting salt alone may not be enough to lower the blood pressure. Potassium must be increased. Most Americans ingest twice as much sodium as potassium.

Sodium and potassium play related role in controlling fluid balance in the body. Without sufficient potassium to help the body secrete sodium, sodium builds up and exerts its harmful effects. Thus, to reduce high blood pressure most people need not only to lower sodium intake but also to increase potassium consumption. Indeed, some studies indicate that potassium intake is a stronger factor in determining blood pressure than is sodium intake. Various population studies confirm a beneficial effect on blood pressure from increases in potassium consumption."

LOOK AT THIS!

"Low levels of potassium can be caused primarily by medications such as cortisone, high blood pressure medications (these are diuretics), and the birth control pill. Nearly all medications and drugs will upset potassium metabolism. Alcohol and exercise can also cause potassium deficiencies. High levels are found when a patient is on Lite salt, kelp or sea salt. Lite salt is potassium choloride (KCl). It is especially bad about upsetting the fluid balance because it upsets the ratio between sodium and potassium. Kelp and sea salt have also been noted to upset this ratio."

So, sea salt is not only good for boosting iodine levels, but potassium levels as well! Sounds like you need to be careful though because it can upset sodium/potassium ratios in the body. I am going to have to learn more about this!

I am just amazed. I never knew what Lite Salt was until about a week ago. My grandparents and my mom used to buy that stuff when I was a pre-teen/teenager. There was a long time when that was the only "salt" to be found in both of their homes - and I ate it too! I really hated the taste of it but got used to it after awhile.

I can only wonder what effect the daily use of potassium chloride (Lite Salt) had on my growing body!

I'll say again... get yourself some detoxified iodine, a few drops in a glass of water per day.. good to go

[link to www.projectgreenlife.com]

Why is Detoxified Iodine superior to Potassium Iodide (KI)?

The idea behind Potassium Iodide is that, being bonded with Potassium, the Iodine is water soluble and therefore easier for the body to assimilate. This has been the basic belief of the scientific community for the past century, however, there is no scientific evidence to substantiate the premise. The body does not assimilate it better because it's bonded with potassium. The detoxified (Atomic) form is the only form the body can fully recognize and thereby assimilate, and it was Mr. Cayce's explanation of the charging process that enabled our manufacturer to transmute this product into its superior form. Naturally, an assimilable Iodine is much better in protecting the thyroids (as well as the reproductive glands, which are the two basic regions of the body that are particularly sensitive to radiation) and stimulating them as well then any other form of iodine.

David Brownstein, MD, a respected authority on iodine, speaking about radiation exposure says: "If there is enough inorganic, non-radioactive iodine in our bodies, the radioactive fallout has nowhere to bind in our bodies. It will pass through us, leaving our bodies unharmed." What Dr Brownstein is saying here is that you need to already have iodine in your body before being exposed, but most people are iodine-deficient in general.

If you are using or planning to use Potassium Iodide (KI) tablets, you must be aware that KI can produce a long list of severe reactions if too much is taken. These include hyper and hypothyroidism and goiter. Adults older than 40 years should not take KI unless public health or emergency management officials say that contamination with a very large dose of radioactive iodine is expected. Adults older than 40 years have the lowest chance of developing thyroid cancer or thyroid injury after contamination with radioactive iodine. They also have a greater chance of having allergic reactions to KI.

hi all, here's my two bits to the discussion;

I started using the Eidon brand( [link to eidon.com] of Potassium Iodide (K1) 10 days ago. I purchased it from my local health food store(beehive). Its the 2oz concentrated size and it was $19.99 it is clear and has absolutely no taste. i drink it in my grape juice(6oz+6oz of water) along with 2 Tbsp of Braggs organic raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar.

please view the link above and read all about what it is and how to take it.

PS, i am in no way affiliated with this product. just trying to contribute.

All I do know about the efficacy is that this product, or any other, will not protect us from PLUTONIUM based radiation, which is what the fukushima #2 reactor is currently spewing into the air. (;-()

I was also looking into iodine (my mom has hypothyroid and I worry about it for myself) and had ordered some also just about a week before the Japanese disaster. I ordered another, bigger bottle soon after the disaster because I worried that my source would run out. I got the Iosol Iodine form that hasn't shown any harmful side effects like potassium iodide sometimes does. I hope it's true that it does help with fluoride toxicity as they just recently added it to our tap water in our town. I read once before that fluoride is bad for your thyroid.

Sure Iodine can cure many of the above problems but what happens when you stop taking it...or take too much...death or even worse problems?

Like taking to much Iodine will slow down the bodies ability to produce its own supply...and maybe even shut it down...

It causes the immune system to go into overdrive. Please read up on your own and do not count on the SLIDE show presented by OP. This is not a medical forum!

Thank you for your input.

I think you would be of better service to everyone here if you would not start off with a sentence like "Seriously, please people". And by the way, it's not really a SLIDE show, that's the only way I knew to describe it. I guess you did not even go to the link or you would have known. No this is not a medical forum, it's GLP! In case you did not know or are new here, GLP is a forum where almost any conversation goes! Medical, spiritual, BS, Doom, and anything in between!!! LOL! That's why we come here!

I have read a little about autoimmune thyroid disease so I understand your point. I don't tell anyone to do anything here. I am only sharing the information and ideas that I am gathering on my personal quest to find health answers. I found some interesting info and I wanted to share it with my friends here at GLP, that's all.

So many people suffer in silence and shame with thyroid disorders. If anyone understands this fact, it should be you. It can sometimes be a long, difficult process to get a diagnosis. Sometimes I don't think doctors fully understand it either. No one can even seem to come to an agreement as to what the correct lab reference range should be for thyroid hormone tests.

I don't claim to know everything, I am just applying my own intelligence and logic to the facts that are out there, and sharing it here in the very large GLP forum. Since so many people are in the dark about this subject, I figured there would be a lot of people who would appreciate my sharing the things I have learned over many hours and days of researching online.

Perhaps you could add to our conversation with information regarding your personal experience with autoimmune thyroiditis? I for one would be very interested to learn more about it. I have an autoimmune disorder called narcolepsy. I also have every symptom of hypothyroidism (no exaggeration) and have had for about 2 years.

After learning that my TSH and T4 levels were normal, I learned about autoimmune thyroiditis and wondered if this is what I might have. My doctor would not perform the thyroid antibody test so I can't know for sure. It's a medical fact that a patient with any autoimmune disorder who develops hypothyroid symptoms with normal TSH and T4 labs should be highly suspected of having autoimmune thyroiditis.

If you have one autoimmune disorder, you are likely to get another one. This fact right here makes me very suspicious that autoimmune disorders as a whole, have some common precipitating factor. This is just MY EDUCATED GUESS: I think *something* is at the root of all autoimmune disorders. Whether it's a deficiency, an excess, a toxicity, I don't know. Again, this is ONLY my opinion.

Re: IODINE - What they DON'T tell us about this MIRACLE nutrient! UNBELIEVABLE!
hi all, here's my two bits to the discussion;

If it's clear it's no good.You need lugol's.The only one that works.Try J. crow.

This page says Lugol's has potassium too.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Even tincture has potassium or sodium. (sorry I was wrong about "detoxified", as it seems that is considered non-toxic because it's just iodine and alcohol, no potassium.)

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

So is Lugol's any better than tincture? The difference is just that the solvent in Lugol's is water, in tincture it's ethanol, which is not toxic. If one of those is toxic because of the potassium, I expect the other would be too.

What about povidone iodine, which is what I happen to have at home for treating wounds:

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

I've applied some to my neck above the collarbone, as Leuren Moret recommended for tincture as a substitute for KI tablets, but is it toxic to drink?

What about povidone iodine? That's what we have a bottle of already for cleaning wounds.
