Mouse Poop and Dog Kibbles together in the HOUSE
Totally grossed out. I have found several LARGE stashes around my room. Before finding, I had been smelling a musty odor. Obviously need eradication versus control. I have a 3 1/2 pound dog that I don't want to poison, however. My 1st infestation, thus, I am obviously disgusted. I prefer prompt death to the rodents, not capturing and setting free elsewhere. I live in a suburb of GW's old stomping ground of Mt. Vernon, VA. Any do it yourselfers here?

If you had a cat instead of dog you wouldn't have a rodent problem.

go ahead and throw some poison out, if you're lucky it'll get rid of the rat as well.

Around your room or around your home?

If its only around one room then chances are pretty high that somewhere in that room there is a nest with pups (baby mice are pups) in it.

I say check your whole house, including the attic and cellar/crawlspace (if any) for signs of mice or rats BEFORE you start spreading poison.

If its rats, they will be less likely to be inside most furnishings. If its mice, they can be any where. Say inside the projection TV, inside the stereo cabinet, nesting in the liner between the interior oven and the exterior stove wall. which most modern ovens have fiberglass insulation, once you get mice in it you have to have it all removed and replaced, cheaper and easier to replace the stove/oven.

Mice and rats rarely run across an open floor, they stick primarily to the baseboard, running at the verge where the wall meets the floor. They will leave behind their tell-tale spoor, follow that to find where they are:

1. Entering your dwelling.
2. Stashing food.
3. Building nests.

1. It is important to find out how they got in the the first place. More often than not they take advantage of a small hole, say the drill hole around a pip, they just open it up wider. You need to seal that with sheet metal/flashing to prevent them from coming back. Other times they find weak spots, termite damaged wood to chew through to gain entry. In this case there being in may actually ultimately save thousands of dollars of termite damage if you discover termites early on.

2. Food stashing takes place in every place they can 'bank' food. They tend to have several stashes close to their nests. Usually if you find a food stash you will either find more food stashes nearby or nests.

3. Nests will be composed from anything they can tear up. I've been in places where old porn magazines were shredded by mice and they had lovely soft nests between images of boobies and other floppy parts. Cloth, the interior of couch cushions, mattresses, you name it, anything they can get their teeth into they will shred to make a nest.

Mice can be a tad crafty and have two or even three nests. So you will have to move every stick of furniture, pull drawers completely out and find every nest. One most likely will have pups, the others will be there in case mom feels threatened, she will move each pup to a new nest.

Just to let you know, it is baby season for rats and mice in most of the northern hemisphere.

Once you have found the nests, stashes and way in, then you can lay in poison. however if you discover you have more than 6 mice, its time to call a professional since you definitely do not want to have a dozen dead bodies in your walls rotting away this year or any year.

Decon Rat/Mouse killer is a blood thinner. They eat enough of it to bleed internally to death. It is a slow and painful way to go. This gives them plenty of time to find a place to die.

Conventional snap traps usually don't break the neck, they break a leg, catch a tail, break the spine and the creature can lay there screeching in agony.

It can be a nice horror show to watch.

If you opt for poison there will be maggots and in less than a month you will have an infestation of black flies (from the maggots becoming adults).

If yo are squeamish about any of this, call a professional and have them 'live trap' the creatures and take them away to kill them.

Mind you seriously want to find that nest, a nest of rotting pup corpses is a disgusting find.

Dr. House. thankyou. I have found in my room only, a place of entry, free dog kibble, and mouse poop. AN Actual mouse was seen across the hall in the laundry room.
I found huge amounts of stored in flat stashes under drawers of my dogs kibbles in my room. I hate rodents and love dogs. I need to eradicate mice and do pennance to the catholic being whose idea of forgivenence is works based. Ugh.. My life sucks.

go to the local animal shelter and pick out a kitten so it will get along with the litle dog
and when the mice pick up the scent of the kittie they'll go and in between you have to CLEAN up and store the kibble in a cannnister with a lid
and don't leave the dog food out and around either.

in the dead of winter we might see one but no droppings so maybe it's just passing through.

cats are good animals and we always have cats and dawgs together and it works fine.
