UNITED NATIONS – A U.N. peacekeeping official says at least 10 United Nations staff members have been killed in a plane crash in Congo.

U.N. peacekeeping spokesman Nick Birnbeck said Monday that the death toll could rise. He says the small passenger plane was carrying an assortment of U.N. staff, including peacekeepers, when it crashed and broke up on impact earlier Monday.

The U.N. mission in Congo includes more than 19,000 uniformed peacekeeping troops. The mission is charged with protecting civilians in the conflict-torn country from violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, including all forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

Rebel Belgian prince under fire over Congo mission

(AFP) – 5 days ago

BRUSSELS — Belgium's unruly Prince Laurent hit new trouble on Wednesday as politicians urged cutting off his state revenue for travelling without permission to former colony the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The troublesome 47-year-old prince, recently stripped of his driving licence for speeding, and castigated for travelling business class with economy-class tickets, flew to Kinshasa this month on an animal welfare mission, the premier's office said.

"The trip was neither agreed beforehand with the government nor the Palace," said a statement from the office of Prime Minister Yves Leterme.

"In spite of requests from the government and the palace to delay the trip to ensure its proper preparation, the prince decided not to delay his departure."

Might have saved his life (perhaps)
