Re: Hit a dog with my truck tonight, Feel like shit.
Driving to the store tonight, dark out, black lab comes bouncing out of the treeline right in front of me. I hit the brakes, dodged right as he ran left. He turns around right into the path of my truck. I hit him going about 40 (I think) after slowing down from 65 mph.

I pulled over, turned on my hazard lights, grabbed my flashlight from the truck, ran back to find him about 20 feet off into the bushes gasping and crying. His whole back half was crushed, innards dangling out, obviously beyond rescue. It was the most depressing thing I have dealt with in a long time.

He wouldn't let me touch him, and snapped at me when I tried to give him aid. It was obvious he was near death and in great pain.

I resigned myself to end his suffering.

I asked God to help me aim true and not make it worse. I never have been an active christian, and often struggled with my personal beliefs about God. Nonetheless, I told the dog I was sorry, that I loved him, and through the tears was able to fire one shot from my .45, ending his life.

Animals are innocent and of pure spirit- actions not predicated on malice or hate. I feel like I deserve something bad to happen to me now. I almost hope something does. Guilt I suppose even though I was unable to prevent it.

Yep, a bad day. I sat alone in my truck in the parking lot of the store for about an hour as tears flooded my face and shirt. Tomorrow I will return to collect him and give him a proper grave under the pine tree in my back yard.

Feels bad man.

I hit a cat this exact same way just under a week ago. I got out but I couldn't find it anywhere. I know for sure it was a cat because I saw it's orange fur right before. You did the right thing. Did he have any tags, least you could do is inform them. They will most likely empathize.

Sorry, friend.
It wasn't your fault, tho.
The owners bear responsibility for his death and for your trauma.
I hope you don't beat yourself up over it - and I'm glad you stopped and helped him go; that was very kind of you.

There was nothing you could do, you said you´re sorry and released him from further Pain, he may have suffered even more if you would not have set him free from Pain and you will give him a grave, how many people would have drove off thinking "Fuck it, it´s just a dog" ?
And Miles to go before I sleep, miles to go before I sleep....

Sorry, hope by now the pain is lessened. This just happened to me tonight. I just got in my BRAND NEW car with 21 miles on odometer tonight to go down to the town next door. On a dark country road I was going LESS than the speed limit, but still about 50 mph. Out of a hidden treeline comes running full speed a 125 pound full size Akita pure breed. I braked hard, swerved but could not avoid hitting the poor fella. I pulled over, went to a nearby farmhouse who told me the dog belonged to the people across the road. I then went over to their house, and gave them the horrible news. The people knew that I was not to blame as the dog broke his chain and was running free. I cried there at their house, and for the entire night tonight. As for my new car it appears to have maybe $ 3000.00 damage but it's insured. The guys pet can't be brought back so easily. I feel HORRIBLE, if you have any advice please reply. Thanks.

Sad to read this story, friend, but you did the right thing (putting the poor thing out of its misery) after the accident. Try not to beat yourself up over it.

I understand how shitty and low it must've made you feel, though. At least the dog is at peace now and won't suffer any more.

The fact that you feel bad about it shows that you have the proper emotional structure.. Dogs, esp. Labradors are not very streetwise and I'm not surprised an unleashed one met an untimely end.. Kudos to you for doing the right thing hf

IM so sorry you had to go thru this tonight . I know how traumatizing it can be .
One night I was out on this desert road . There were hundreds and hundreds of rabbits everywhere. more then i had ever seen . I tried to drive slow but i kept hearing "THUMP THUMP " i knew i had hit them no matter how hard i tried not too I had to get home it was getting dark out and cold . This went on for about three miles .
I felt sick and i think of it from time to time . It still is something i feel terrible about :( /

Re: Hit a dog with my truck tonight, Feel like shit.
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over ... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "Good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.

Oh boy, rough night. Not something I'd wish on anyone. But you have a heart and that gives us great hope. All a normal, healthy reaction to a chain of events totally out of your hands. You did everything right but you couldn't make that last 'zig'. I hate stories like this it's so heartbreaking. You know that they go straight to heaven though, don't you? Not like us sinners. So take heart and be good to yourself.

I am so sorry you wen't through that. There have been times I just missed hitting a dog that darts out in front of me. I know how seeing a dog dying is though, because my dog died in my arms after a car hit him, and did'nt even stop , when I was 7. My parents were gone at the store shopping when it happened. He was a big dog too. I can still hear his crying.

OP, I know you want to bury that dog, but perhaps there's a poor Filipino family who'd appreciate it more? I mean, what with the holidays right around the corner, special meals for special times. Christmas means helping each other out.

It sounds like the dog owner may have been negligent in not keeping the dog secure, which then caused your car damage and emotional suffering. You should get a lawyer and sue.
