Is anyone else smelling the past more frequently?

All the time; memory and scent are linked.

Smell is the most powerful memory trigger...you must be fairly young to never have been through this before...or did you recently move away from someone that was OCD with perfumes and scented candles & stuff?

I have experienced it before, but it just seems to be happening more and more often, like never before.

It doesn't matter where I am or what I'm doing. Like I could understand if I were in a candle shop, out for a walk, etc... when it happens, but it's happening for what seems to be no direct cause...

Just sitting around in the house, nothing new brought into the environment, and all of a sudden these scents find their way and trigger memories, but even the memories triggered seem more vivid, more real...

I'm finding this very strange.

Not me, for me it could be anything, almost radom and then bam.. I recall a place or people, only lately the recall is more vivid than I ever remember it being..

almost like the past is coming into the present.

very weird yes, I thought it could be just because I was getting older but who knows. it does happen a lot more frequently now

I'm getting older too, perhaps you're right. I've just been noticing it, really noticing it, almost like I'm supposed to notice it happening...

Perhaps it's a normal part of aging though.

I beleieve such things are a normal part of aging, causing us to begin reviewing our lives, the better to begin discerning a pattern in them.

I also think, though, that as the stresses of this world continue mounting, more and more of us will retreat to our memories of better times/places as a "coping mechanism" with overpowering stress.

I was just wondering if you were used to strong smells of , say, candles and soaps and then moved out (of Mom's house) and your sense of smell no longer assaulted by artificial chemicals was coming back...

Count me in , past few weeks it's getting more frequently.

It's hard to explain, but when it happens, it just seems like more than a simple flashback.

To more accurately describe it, it's like the past flickering into the present very briefly.

Nothing physical mind you, but the overwhelming sense that.... um the past is here and now, sort of..

I don't know,,,,, just seems to be happening more often, and it seems to start with a smell..

No, been out of "Moms house" for more than 25 years...

The thing is, I'm a smoker too and have been for years, which has dulled my sense of smell, but lately that sense seems to be more active, but being triggered by something that I can't really explain.

Fucking weird, to the point that I'm posting about it on GLP wondering what the heck might be going on, or maybe to find out if it's just me....

Nothing physical? Hell, every time I smell Ciara Perfume, my dick gets hard...and that goes back 20 some years...

I know just what you mean. This morning at work I kept smelling last nights bier rock casserole, though it didn't smell as pleasant.

It's always been super powerful with me, so I guess I'm just a freak...welcome!

LOL, too funny... So far, my penis hasn't been involved, but that's not to say that hasn't happened before, so I hear ya. lol

I had a lot of that going on recently. Not so much the last month but a few months ago I was having quite a lot of it.

fortunately for me, the experiences have been pleasant enough, but I'm talking the distant past, smells and sensations from long ago, for no reason and more powerful than anything I ever remember.

It's not something that hasn't happened before, just that it seems to be happening more frequently, and strangely different lately, hard to explain really.

Maybe you have reconnected with your soul after being spiritually dead/eye closed for your teen and young adult life. Hence, during your dead years, you were blind, now, something has opened your eye.

Result - Your soulful past is coming back

I'm finding it kinda freaky in that it's happening so much more lately....

Who knows, maybe my brain is misfiring.....

Gotta get back to work, but I'll keep an eye on this thread for anyone else that wants to contribute and thanks to all who have.

Funny, but my memory seems to be sharper lately as far as childhood memories, music etc.

You are most welcome. The answers are inside of you and cleansing is a must. If you start doing some charity, studying and meditation, you will take it to a whole new level.
