Right after Chernobyl blew its top, Edward Teller said on the ABC Evening News in late April 1986, “The chances of a real calamity at a nuclear power station are infinitesimally small. But should it happen, the consequences are impossible to imagine.” The plume from the burning graphite at Chernobyl initially traveled in a northwest direction toward Sweden, Finland and Eastern Europe, exposing the public to levels up to 100 times the normal background radiation.

Hope Burwell wrote, “On my first trip to Chernobyl in November 2000, I spent three days touring schools in Cherikov and the even more contaminated areas of the Mogilev district. Then we traveled to children’s hospitals in Minsk. What I saw there still shows up in nightmares: children with eyes in the sides of their heads, and children with no eyes at all, children with fingers that look like toes and children whose genitals are so poorly formed one can’t determine their sex. Those nightmares are audible with infant wails like the cries of wounded wild animals.”

The Japanese Nuclear Crisis is the first major nuclear event since the new ICRP 1999 recommendations, which include a 10 mSv action level (regardless of the inhalation and ingestion hazard, which exists as a function of particle numbers, not the external dose rate). Japan has chosen, in its stupidity, to double the action level to 20 mSv and leave people in place during incoming fallout and decontamination and the threat of more emissions from the unresolved risks present in Spent fuel pool number 4. But the Diet sees risks of harm to children and pregnant women. Why leave them there ? What gangsters in the nuclear effects community worldwide are running Japan? This situation may be coming to a nuclear dependent community near you. The threat of internal emitters is well documented. The inhalation is under estimated by the Government of Japan in its industry driven social responses to the nuclear disaster.

Editorial: Diet should pass Fukushima child victims’ law and hold gov’t responsible

Lawmakers in both the ruling and opposition parties are in the final stages of composing a draft bill supporting victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, with an emphasis on providing support for children and pregnant women, who are said to be especially sensitive to radiation.

One of the pillars of the proposed legislation is the reduction or exemption of medical expenses for children and expecting mothers living in areas where radiation levels exceed a certain standard.

Many lives, especially those of Fukushima prefectural residents, have been turned upside down due to the nuclear disaster. A large number of people not under government orders to evacuate have done so anyway on their own volition, with many families being torn apart. The anguish of parents with young children, in particular, is immeasurable.

As local residents agonize over the lack of progress in decontamination efforts and any guarantees of health and food safety in the coming years, they face a basic question: will the national government continually enforce the measures and policies they seek?

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TECPO), the operator of the stricken Fukushima power plant, is proceeding with its compensation payments to disaster victims based on guidelines set by the science ministry’s Dispute Reconciliation Committee for Nuclear Damage Compensation. However, payment of damages alone does not compensate for the victims’ true suffering.

The bill currently being drafted aims to spell out the responsibility of the national government for its promotion of nuclear power, and mandate the government’s continuous support of disaster victims. A lifetime guarantee of health exams for children who have lived in designated areas, as well as the provision of opportunities for children actually living in designated areas to spend time in nature far from Fukushima are also expected to be incorporated into the bill.

In a developing story that is raising concerns over a potential nuclear cover-up by the EPA, alarming amounts of radiation were reported near the border of Indiana and Michigan and later censored by the EPA online geiger tool.

The readings, which were captured in a screenshot, measured as high as 7.139 counts per minute (CPM). This is particularly startling, as the normal radiation levels are generally between 5 and 6 CPM. Sources say that a Department of Homeland Security hazmat team has now been dispatched after ‘years’ of inactivity.

A number of community reports have come in on the subject in fact, with readers of community boards and concerned citizens offering up some interesting and intriguing information regarding the potential radiation cover-up.

Discussion over the information first began to surface on Internet boards like Reddit and user-submitted news source Digital Journal. In the Reddit submission, which ultimately reached thousands of comments — many from those in the area who had contacted radiation monitoring stations and other affiliated individuals brought some further information to light.

According to a recent U.C. Davis study, uranium-filled nanospheres are created from the millions of tons of fresh and salt water used to try to cool down the three molten cores of the stricken reactors. The tiny and tough buckyballs are shaped like British Association Football soccer balls.

Indiana Radiation Spike Triggers Elevated Levels In Other States, Corporate Media Stays Silent

Elevated Indiana radiation levels — specifically near the border of Indiana and Michigan — have prompted explosions, military helicopters, thousands of eyewitness accounts, but where is the mainstream media coverage?

Now independent radiation experts are reporting increased levels in some other states, with one particular station noticing an increase since just around 11:45 am Mountain Time on Thursday. This coincides with community board posts created just around the same time in a number of locations, even before the incident hit the public.

In one such posting on a law enforcement website discussing the radiation increase, an individual from Chicago states “We’ve been encountering some high readings at the labs here.”

Independent radiation monitoring station owner Joey Stanford has uploaded a video showing spiked radiation levels as far as Colorado. Some individuals are questioning the actual source of the increased radiation, stating that it could be solar-based.

Washington Governor announces tsunami litter plan

The emergency management division of the state Military Department will coordinate the state effort to corral and clean up Japanese tsunami debris floating onto state beaches, Gov. Chris Gregoire announced Monday.

The state is setting aside $100,000 from the state Department of Ecology litter cleanup account to help dispose of debris. But the state will seek reimbursement of cleanup costs from the federal government.

"While we expect debris to arrive slowly over the next several years, there's a chance a major storm could was up several thousand pounds of debris at once," the governor said in announcing the state response plan. "That will require far more financial resources than our state has available."

Since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, crippling a nuclear power plant complex, state health officials have been testing debris that may have come from Japan for radiation contamination, but have found none to date. Scientists say the tsunami debris was already washed out to sea before the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster struck.

One thing that Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) can be relied upon for: a never ending stream of disinformation with cesium laden piles of putridity.

Firstly, there is the matter of the Unit 4 spent fuel pool, that many experts claim could collapse in a major earthquake leading to massive releases of radiation.

When I sent the story written by Japanese Diplomat, Akio Matsumura, to a Japanese professor I know whose focus is international relations, the tenure-track professor dismissed it as “tabloid journalism.” Talk about a nation with its focus on its own navel, they don’t even know what danger they are in despite the 3/11 catastrophe.

Can you imagine what respectable people who attend conferences and wear suits and ties would have said of someone like me if I went on a campaign to alert people of the disaster that awaited Japan pre-March 2011? I would have been completely ignored or laughed at as a Cassandra and conspiracy nut! So were many sincere anti-nuclear activists at the Citizens Nuclear Information Center in Tokyo.

Japan has allowed seafood caught off the coast near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to be sold to consumers; although only octopus and marine snails were allowed to be put on the market.

Hirofumi Konno, Soma city’s official in charge of sales at the fishing co-operative, says that with consumers buying the seafood, it proves there is support for the industry. Konno said:

I was filled with both uncertainty and hope today, but I was so happy when I found out the local supermarket had sold out by 3pm.

Testing of the seafood sold for radioactive substances were negligible according to the co-operative. However radioactive cesium, which is a byproduct of the nuclear process, has been found in species of fish from Japan to the west coast of America.

Nobuyuki Yagi, professor of the University of Tokyo, said in regard to Japanese fishing industry: Fishing cannot survive unless people buy the fish. That may seem obvious, but Fukushima is facing up to this.

Should we trust the Japanese government, international nuclear agencies and corporate-controlled media regarding the safety of air, food and water after the Fukushima nuclear disaster? Many people are rightly suspicious, but at the end of the day one still has to eat, drink and breathe. For many people it’s easier to pretend that a little bit of radiation is nothing to get riled up about.

After all, just one medical CT scan [computerized axial tomography] is equivalent to 6-10 whopping millisieverts (mSv) -- several years worth of normal background radiation (3; 4). Doctors who presumably care about patient health issue these without batting an eyelash-- “it is safe” a doc once told me.

Medical technology contributes a large proportion of anthropogenic radiation to people in developed countries and is an issue that deserves greater scrutiny (5). How ironic that doctors who may correctly advise patients “not to smoke” probably don’t know that cigarettes are a substantial source of radiation.

But that does not make nuclear pollution a moot topic.

Model simulations on the long-term dispersal of 137Cs released into the Pacific Ocean off Fukushima

Abstract
A sequence of global ocean circulation models, with horizontal mesh sizes of 0.5°, 0.25° and 0.1°, are used to estimate the long-term dispersion by ocean currents and mesoscale eddies of a slowly decaying tracer (half-life of 30 years, comparable to that of 137Cs) from the local waters off the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plants. The tracer was continuously injected into the coastal waters over some weeks; its subsequent spreading and dilution in the Pacific Ocean was then simulated for 10 years.

The simulations do not include any data assimilation, and thus, do not account for the actual state of the local ocean currents during the release of highly contaminated water from the damaged plants in March–April 2011. An ensemble differing in initial current distributions illustrates their importance for the tracer patterns evolving during the first months, but suggests a minor relevance for the large-scale tracer distributions after 2–3 years. By then the tracer cloud has penetrated to depths of more than 400 m, spanning the western and central North Pacific between 25°N and 55°N, leading to a rapid dilution of concentrations.

The rate of dilution declines in the following years, while the main tracer patch propagates eastward across the Pacific Ocean, reaching the coastal waters of North America after about 5–6 years. Tentatively assuming a value of 10 PBq for the net 137Cs input during the first weeks after the Fukushima incident, the simulation suggests a rapid dilution of peak radioactivity values to about 10 Bq during the first two years, followed by a gradual decline to 1–2 Bq m-3 over the next 4–7 years. The total peak radioactivity levels would then still be about twice the pre-Fukushima values.
