Fukushima Panel: Information on Radiation Release Suppressed

NHK [Japanese Public Television] has learned that a government panel of experts will say it has been unable to specify exactly how the radioactive release occurred at a reactor of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

On March 15th, 4 days after the breakdown of the Fukushima Daiichi plant, its No. 2 reactor appeared to release the largest amount of radioactive substances since the start of the disaster.

The panel investigating the accident at Fukushima Daiichi will present a new observation in its final report later this month.

The report will say pressure in the suppression chamber of the No. 2 reactor was falling gradually between 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm on March 14th.

It will say this suggests that the suppression chamber collapsed at the time.

The plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, has insisted that the suppression chamber was destroyed during the morning hours of March 15th, when pressure was falling rapidly, instead of the previous day.

The panel will take issue with TEPCO's view, saying their analysis probably does not reflect what actually happened.

Were it not for certain nuclear whistle blowers and outside, independent experts, the public would have to rely on the glib and technically inaccessible reports from Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) or the Japanese government.

Not that those reports are entirely without substance, but due to the incomprehensible technical jargon most people simply throw up their hands and hope for the best.

Luckily, in this day of the Internet we can learn a lot about what is going on thanks to independent researchers and writers.

To the extent that mainstream newspapers have covered the issue responsibly, and there has been substantive coverage, web sites like “enenews.com”; “fukushima-diary.com” and “rense.com” have served as information clearinghouses for mainstream news, academic studies and independent sources of journalism about the nuclear crisis in Japan.

The technological issue of nuclear energy is intertwined with the exploitation of human labor in a hierarchy of interests, and how human labor is expended is an economic and moral issue. Americans Are Largely Responsible for Japan’s Ongoing Nuclear Policy
Archaic nuclear reactor designs such as those used at Fukushima – built by American company General Electric – were chosen because they were good for making nuclear bombs. The U.S. secretly helped Japan develop its nuclear weapons program starting in the the 1980s. Therefore, the U.S. played a large role in Japan’s development of nuclear energy. (See this).

After the Fukushima disaster – in an effort to protect the American nuclear industry – the U.S. has joined Japan in raising “acceptable” radiation levels. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also signed a pact with her counterpart in Japan agreeing that the U.S. will continue buying seafood from Japan, despite the fact that the FDA is refusing to test seafood for radiation in any meaningful fashion. So U.S. actions are helping to protect a pro-nuclear policy in Japan.

Indeed, mainstream Japanese newspaper Nikkei reports that it was President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton who have pressured the Japanese to re-start that country’s nuclear program after the Japanese government vowed to end all nuclear power in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

Report reveals Japanese nuclear safety experts received large sums of money from nuclear industry

While the “profoundly man-made disaster” at the Fukushima nuclear power plant continues unabated with independent experts continually blocked from gaining access, it has now been revealed that the six members of a Japanese government team drafting the new nuclear reactor safety standards have received tens of thousands of dollars from the nuclear industry.

According to a report put out by Japan’s Kyodo News a whopping four out of six experts on the panel drafting new safety standards have received funds from companies directly involved in the nuclear industry.

The grants, donations and compensation range from 3 million yen (around $37,290) to over 27 million yen (around $335,600) each, according to data released by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA).

While the NRA claimed that the members of the panel “have been selected in line with rules, and there should be no problem,” Kyodo News rightly points out that critics “say the members’ judgments might be swayed by the wishes of donors, exposing safety regulations to the risk of being watered down.”

Over one and a half years has passed since the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station. Both US scientists, basing their findings on Japanese government data, and Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) itself, admit that nuclear reactors are probably continuing to contaminate the Pacific Ocean with radiation.

The way the Establishment treats the issue is revealing, ranging from mild concern to glib indifference, to blatant double-speak. While the New York Times has a reputation for standard-setting journalism, close scrutiny of their reporting (cited below) shows they promote the best-case scenario while downplaying dangers. The word “glib” pretty much sums up their style. For example, the NYT notes at the end of their article that while on the one hand Tepco denies radiation is leaking into the ocean, Tepco’s “spokesman” said he could not rule out radiation leaks. NYT leaves it at that without pursuing the truth of the matter.
