Month of May foodstamp program could be affected by shutdown
Welfare ("Temporary Assistance for Needy Families") will be unaffected, writes the Times. It is funded through September. Food stamps have a different fate. They're provided at the beginning of each month, so they'll be fine unless a shutdown lasts into May.

Finally, the federal government provides the funding for extended unemployment insurance benefits. These are very important to millions of long-term unemployed Americans who have exhausted the number of weeks states will provide unemployment insurance. The Treasury has the duty of providing states with the funds to pay extended benefits, and it has indicated that these payments will continue, even if the federal government shuts down.

Could be the may 01 revolution sparked by food riots.

Nobody knows how long shutdown will last..

Medicare: According to the administration official, Medicare is funded for the short-term - and would likely remain unaffected unless the government were to remain closed for a period of months or more. NIH, however, will not be able to accept new patients or begin new clinical trials.

In 2006, the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a study of its food stamp recipients. The study found that 52 percent of qualifying households had children and nine percent were elderly. It also found that 42 percent of qualifying households were white, 33 percent were black, and 19 percent were Hispanic. The average income of a qualifying household was reported as $673 a month.

Caucasian (182,494), Black (68,873), Hispanic/Latino (95,787), Asian (4,039), North American/Alaskan (1,391) and Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (328).

State officials say that in general, food stamp use is greatest among working families headed by a single mother, but the recession has changed that mold.
Lucy Nolan, executive director of End Hunger CT, shared the story of an affluent couple with children, who were living in a suburban community in Avon, Conn.

Both had earned masterís degrees at respectable institutions and both had lost their jobs during the recession. With no where else to turn, they turned to food stamps.
This is just one example of how suburban communities are facing challenges they typically donít face.

In Weston, food stamp enrollment rose 50 percent from July 2008 to June 2009.

They say this every time there is a shut down. It never happens unless the President says it should. He picks what gets stopped and what doesn't. He picks Military, Welfare and whatever. Shut it down and board it up! Obama gets the blame!

Time for everyone to plant a garden.

Something to eat or something to share, depends on your situation.

Probably just more of the emotional roller coaster though.

All this crap reminds me of a car salesman's pitch called the Four Square. A sheet of paper with a big + on it and he has an objective in each of the 4 squares to take the customer up and down a roller coaster ride, so that in the end, you just gotta have the damn car. Here's an article on it. [link to autoinsidernews.com]

If you ever see a car salesman with a piece of paper like that, just say, Put that 4 square piece of paper up or I'm walking out. Better yet, just run like hell, he has it all inside his head from the hours of training on it.

Actually is a grammatical error, NOT a spelling mistake. But I am sure dumbass welfare recipients like you don't know what the fuck I am talking about.

Good OP, foodstamps should be abolished.

If those piece of shit leeches go hungry then maybe they will go and work for some food.

This is going to sound heartless and cruel, but I would almost like to see this happen for a couple of weeks just to see how people and the government agencies react. Real problems could be (and likely are) just around the corner and I wouldn't mind having a sneak preview for planning purposes.

Do you know what time of the month the SNAP cards are loaded? If they've recently had their allotment, it wouldn't be as bad as when they are waiting for the next allocation.

there are those of us who are DISABLED and UNABLE to work. getting a job is not all that easy, especially if you have a newborn child to take care of. you cant take a baby to work at mcdonalds, its unsanitary and the baby could end up hurt. and no i cant just drop my kid off at a babysitter, i breastfeed her, she doesnt take bottles.

LOL, then raise the lower wages, dummy,

Lower end wages havent gone up hardly for decades, yet housing, gas and food have more than quadrupled, sextupled. And CEO wages have shot thru the roof too with benefits.

If lower wages were to truly reflect, Minimum wage would be 20.00 dollars an hour today.

They know this, thats why theres welfare.

Thats not the problem, its creating a unliveable service and labor wage for those without a College education that supports, politics, law, Pharma and Big Corp.

People used to have manufacturing jobs that paid ok, but remember, it all got shipped off to China, Mexico and India
