FLOOD BULLETIN #6

Manitoba Water Stewardship advises the Red River Floodway gates will be raised for the first time in 2011 at approximately 9 a.m., tomorrow, Saturday, April 9.

If unanticipated events occur that make it necessary to change this time, another public notice will be issued.

The gradual raising of the gates will protect Winnipeg while keeping river levels south of the floodway inlet at or below natural levels.

In accordance with floodway operating rules, the horn will be sounded at the inlet control structure at 8:30 a.m., one half-hour before operation of the gates.

The flood has already claimed one home at Breezy Point this spring.

Keeping my fingers crossed, my son is out sandbagging this afternoon.

Manitoba floods claim driver's life

On Saturday afternoon, an underwater recovery team found the body of a 61-year-old man who had drowned the day before in his vehicle as he tried to drive through a flooded stretch of road in De Salaberry, south of Winnipeg, RCMP said.

"Investigation revealed that the man had attempted to cross a flooded portion of road in the rural municipality of De Salaberry when his vehicle left the roadway and became submerged," police said in a news release.

CJOB said this morning that the government was glad to purchase all that property at Breezy Point, as they would have been washed away again this year. Good call!
