Strange Chemical / Bleach-Like Smell In My Nose! Anyone else ever have this? What is it???

This question is getting only pothead answers, so lets try this conversation on a more inteligent forum

Might be colour related? Or environment related as quite a few people get tastes with certain environments or colours whereas they don't get it with other places, the places these tend to be are around places you spend an awful amount of time at and even if someone in your house can't smell it it clarifys it more and more! i have the very same issue after waking up in the morning but it only last 10 - 15 minutes. smells like chlorine or bleach? today 1-26-13 is the 3rd time in 6 months or so.

OK; this brings back memories! Went to West Edmonton Mall in 1985. Took the wife, 3kids, and enjoyed the wave pool! I was in the change room, and there were every ethnic race from the world there! Was fine at the moment, but, then went into the wave pool! You wade in, and, then the huge paddle pushes a huge wave towards you. The first wave that hit me, plunged up my nose. There had to be 150 people in there. When I left and had a smoke on the sidlelines (smoking was allowed then); I noticed the flavour was like strong Javex! That was 2pm. We left at 6:30pm and drove to Albertville, to stay with a nephew and visit. By 10PM, I was a frickin invalid; had the most intense fever, Javex smells, Nose/Sinuses congested etc. I woke up mid 2 or 3 AM, and the bed sheets were total soaked in sweat! But, I was freezing! Lasted 4 days, and continued on Holidays to Ft.McMurray to visit family! Got over it, but have had re-occurences over the last 25 or so years! Had a bout in April/2012, and again in Dec/12 to Jan.12/13, and still not out of the woods. It is a severe sinus infection, and when it hits, prior to your loosing your smell senses,
everything tastes or smells like Javex! It is a very bad infection, wishing you could die, is what it does to you!! Garlic sliced and eaten, Onion sliced top and bottom placed in a dish by your night stand while you sleep, will definitely help you! Trust me! I just came out of this bug! Not a hundred percent yet, but much better. And this time without antibiotics!! Used
Apple Cider Vinegar drinks with hot water and honey; steamed with this as well; and of course the onion thing. It works! Did not want any penicillin, cause last April/12, had it worse than now; had 20 days of antibiotics to kill this, but I know it didn't cure it totally. That's why I got it again in Dec/12. Missed a full week of work, but used conventional healing rather than antibiotics, so as not to allow the bug to become a Super Bug! It worked; The Javex/Chlorine taste is the onset of infection of the sinuses! Good Luck and Get Well.

I have this smell too! It's inside my nose, my wife doesn't smell it. It comes and goes, I drink a or of protein and work out all the time so it might have something to do with what the other person said about bodybuilders having that problem.

I am experiencing the exact same symptoms. I am constantly smelling the strong smell of bleach. I am not sure what triggers this or why it's happening. I am going to call my Doctor tmrrw and I will keep u posted.

I have had the same bleach odor recurring in my nose several times this year. The only thing I can relate it to, is allergy/sinus problems or having breathed in chlorine fumes from treating our pool. I've just never had this happen before this year and it's very aggravating. My husband cannot smell it on me and it is worse upon awakening. I'm glad to know I'm not the only person with this. And I certainly hope it's not a tumor for either of us!

Sometimes it happens, particularly to nervous people, that they don't swallow right when they eat and some food particles get stuck where the roof of the mouth ends and the nose tract starts. Food can actually get stuck "up your nose" and what happens is of course it stays there stuck for days and starts to rot. That's the smell you smell.

Try to find some way to clean that area with water or something, take water in your mouth and try to make it come out through your nose, or if you are courageous, do it the reverse way, breathe a small quantity of water into your nose and let it come down in the back of your mouth.

Or try some combination of coughing and - I don't know how to explain it - try to make that snorting noise and repeat it several times until you feel the stuck particle is coming down into your throat.

The fakirs of old had all sorts of tricks like this to clean their bodies.

Ive had the same thing for years. I have extreme anxiety from high school. I also have had an mri and discovered i have scars on my brain. If so you have your answer. You are smelling a by product from your muscles rebuilding. It's very noticeable for those who haven't worked out for some time and have taken up a new regimen.

You've been to your doctor, your allergist, had your house air analysed; you were poked, prodded and pricked and now you don't know what else to do ?

I've experienced what you've described, but my phantom odours would also include ammonia, church incense, wet burlap, mildew and «intimate odours».
I searched for years until I heard about nasal irrigation. If, like me, you have a tendency to sniffle, hold in your sneeze or don't monitor your home humidity, your sinuses may be clogged with years of dried mucus.

To get rid of this, go to your neighborhood pharmacy, buy an ear syringe (you know you have the correct size when it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, like a pear would). Once home, fill an 8-ounce glass with lukewarm water and add ¼ teaspoon of table salt; mix well. Fill the syringe, tilt your head backward and gently fill one nose cavity. When full, gently blow your nose into the bathroom sink, blocking the other nostril by pressing on your nose with a finger; alternate to the other nose cavity.

This should be done over until the expelled water is clear. You will be amazed at how much gunk your nose has taken in over time. For one week, repeat the procedure daily, before going to bed, so you breathe easily during the night. For upkeep, do it once a week.

Hello everyone. I'm so glad to find this discussion thread online, because there seems to be little to no published medical articles on this subject.
My story:
- As soon as I step out of the shower, I begin to smell strong chemicals (similar to bleach/ammonia/chlorine). The duration lasts about 10-15 minutes. This has been going on over the past 8months.
- Tonight, after spending more than 10 minutes in a steamy shower, I smell it again. This time, my eyes are burning.

My fiancé claims he doesn't smell anything malodorous.

Some considerations:
I do smoke
We are on city water (not well water)
We live in Georgia
I spend a lot of time doing yard work
Our lawn is chemically treated by TruGreen
I do suffer from frequent migraines and seasonal allergies
I had a cranial MRI done 2 years ago; negative on abnormalities


I was hoping to gain some insight on this frustrating odor. It pretty much sucks taking a shower now. Does anyone have a diagnosis yet?

Hi man i used to have this problem also, Until i figured out that it was..you know the inside of your nose? on the front of the inside you see that it is kind of space there? Which if you clean your face with water or just general snoring while eating innuit*.

Then that secration stays in the front of your nose and "molds" or gets kinda old. And if you try to pick some of you will notice that it is not a bugger or whatever. its more dark green moist chemically in smell.

Hit on head you are probably having seizure activity but not manifesting as an actual seizure. He odd smell is an aura because of the abnormal reg patterns.

I've experienced the same thing. No one else smells the bleach.
