Either the dates are wrong, and coal is newer than the geologic column would have us belive, or there was a sentient lifeform around at the time, the other possibility is that this is a hoax.

The "geological column" was invented around the same time Darwin put out his garbage, by a lawyer (!) Charles Lyell. It tries to explain the sediment layers laid down during the great flood as "ages". They date fossiles based on what layer it's in, and they date the layer based on what fossiles found in it.

i believe we've been wiped out a few times.

I would speculate that 'various' space travelers either :

1. Came here and started colonies, which were overwelmed by solar, or natural events that wiped them out, or they were picked up by the same ones who put them here ( as a 'scientific' experiment ? ).

2. These same space explorers accidently left people here, who survived for many ages, before disease, war or preditors wiped them out.

3. Space ships from other solar systems used Earth as a place to land, due to 'mechanical' problems/low fuel/to replentish food stocks and WATER . For unknown reasons, they were NOT able to 'lift off'/leave.

4. 'God' has tried SEVERAL 'experiments' with the human race, and this one is about to leave it's " footprints in the sands of time ", as did the others. It may be that this is as FAR as man can go ( nuclear age , politically, scientifically ) before it IS TOO BIG TO CONTROL by the various 'factions' involved.
