Quoting: There is something better!!! 1325189Calcium hypochlorite, also known as POOL SHOCK, is much better and is stable enough to last for years in your survival stash. Read on: <<<Calcium hypochlorite is one of the best chemical disinfectants for water, better than household bleach by far. It destroys a variety of disease causing organisms including bacteria, yeast, fungus, spores, and viruses. Calcium Hypochlorite is widely available for use as swimming pool chlorine tablets or white powder that is much more stable than chlorine. This is often known as “pool shock”.>>> <<<A 1-pound pag of calcium hypochlorite in granular form will treat up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water.>>> [link to www.survivaltopics.com] neat, huh? Excellent info. Thanks for posting. |
:) (OP) User ID: 1325189 United States 04/10/2011 09:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | bleach lasts for years, not six months. its recommended because its common, not cos its the best thing. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1336745just better than drinking squillions of waterbugs. From the website: “We recommend storing (liquid) bleach at room temperatures. It can be stored for about 6 months at temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. After this time, bleach will be begin to degrade at a rate of 20% each year until totally degraded to salt and water. Storing at temperatures much higher than 70 degrees Fahrenheit could cause the bleach to lose its effectiveness and degrade more rapidly. However, if you require 6% sodium hypochlorite, you should change your supply every 3 months.” My point is not that liquid bleach is useless, just that it degrades and may not be the best choice for your long term survival storage. |

Yeah neet! ... How much to treat say...1- 5 gallons? Gosh, just a very very tiny amount (1/10,000 of a pound for 1 gallon, however much that is) - so the technique is to first mix up a batch of concentrate, and use small amounts of that concetrate to disinfect the water at a ratio of 1 to 100. Here are the directions on the website: <<<Using granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water is a two step process. 1.To make a ***stock of chlorine solution*** (do not drink this!) dissolve 1 heaping teaspoon (about one-quarter of an ounce) of high-test (78%) granular calcium hypochlorite for each two gallons (eight liters) of water. 2.To disinfect water add one part of the chlorine solution to 100 parts water to be treated. 3.Let the mixture sit for at least one-half hour before drinking. Be sure to obtain the dry granular calcium hypochlorite since once it is made into a liquid solution it will begin to degrade and eventually become useless as a disinfecting agent. This also means you should make your treated drinking water in small batches, for example enough for a few weeks at a time at most.>>> So first you mix up a batch of concentrate and then you use that concentrate at a ratio of 1 to 100 with water. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1322944Yes, great attitude. If you are planning of dying from radiation poisoning, who cares about cholera? |

Thanks great information!! Sure thing. Every once in awhile I review the recipe, as I am unlikely to have it printed out just when I would need it. You know how that goes. Wouldn't want to get the ratios wrong, blechhh!! The easiest way for me to remember, personally, is to think in terms of "1 heaping teaspoon fixes 200 gallons", and the rest of the procedure(steps of making the liquid concentrate first)is easy to remember. |

It makes people think that instead of using this alternative, they can use bleach. Bleach is a great way to kill your self. It is historically know that consuming bleach WILL kill you. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1358781 United States 04/27/2011 01:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Use the ratios in this thread, but if you want to clear out the bleach, put the water in bright sun for a couple of hours or more after treatment. The sun decomposes the chlorine bleach. Once the water is treated, the bleach goes away in a few days even without sun. |
