Take him to the vet.

It could be his spine - swimming therapy.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
You really have to watch it with Dachshunds. If they our even a little overweight it puts enormous pressure on their backs. I had a dachshund that was starting to become paralyzed. His feet kept slipping out from under him. He couldn't stay up. I was going to put him to sleep. I had him in my arms and was ready to walk out the door to the vet but I just couldn't do it. I decided to try one last thing. Acupuncture. It worked! He was better within a few days and did not have anymore problems after that.

Yes, most likely tick, but could also be spine.

At first, only the hind legs will show the paralysis, but the front legs will be paralyzed in only a few hours. The dog may soon have difficulty breathing and can die from paralysis to the respiratory system.

Remove Ticks
The ticks must be removed for the dog to fully recover. Most ticks are found on the head and neck, but the entire dog must be searched to ensure that all the ticks are removed.

And let me guess, you are looking for a home remedy to fix the problem ?

Depending on it's age, this happens. And only way to find out for sure what is wrong is to take your dog to the vet.

But let me guess, you dont have the money to take it to the vet.

I dont know about Dachshunds, but heard for German Shepards whose rear legs give out, They need vitamin C as a preventive measure.

take him to a vet immediately. If you can get him there right away, medical treatment (vs. surgical) has a better chance of working.

and sad to say, but it will likely be expensive.

most likely cause is a slipped disc..but it is possible that he had an emboli or some other vascular 'accident'.

Just take him in to your vet asap.

It's due to his vertebrate infringing on a nerve, this is sad. Your dog has more than likely suffered in silence for some time. They make a type of wheel chair for your dog .

This is fairly common and you should be able to find lots of help on the web if you google it. Commonly this will affect his ability to urinate and have normal bowel movements. Don't let your vet talk you into surgery for your dog due to the poor rate of success.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. †.

NOT AT ALL if it's a tick. Full, quick recovery possible if it's a tick. Or it could be deadly.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
That happened to my cat a while ago.

My cat who was healthy, happy and young (2-years old) came home dragging his hind legs.

Waited a few days. No improvement. Took him to vet. They had NO idea what happened and leaned towards something biting him although they saw no puncture wounds.

After a week of not being able to go to the bathroom (he was paralyzed) we HAD to put him down because the toxins would've just built up.

It was the saddest day I ever experience. Not so much that my pet died but because he was relatively happy and purring the whole time yet we were completely helpless and clueless as to what happened and why!

I feel very badly for you. I hope your dog has better results as far as a diagnoses. But if not, hang in there.

Sorry this happened, but if the vet was able to reverse the paralysis, like find the tick, the cat would not have been poisoned from not being able to pee.

First off it is only deer ticks that can cause LYME'S disease. If this is the cause the tick that gave your dog the lyme disease is long gone. My dog has Lyme disease and it is a neurological disease that can affect the dog in many ways. I am guessing that your dog has back problems and this is the cause of his paralysis . Lyme disease is a long slow process that you would have picked up on long ago.

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
My parents got into a bad accident a day before this past Christmas. Their daschund was in the car with them and he couldn't move his back legs at all. There were no breaks according to x-rays. He just drug his legs behind him everywhere he went and couldn't control his bowls. This is a side affect as well due to a slipped disc or such. This dog breed has problems with their backs and can throw them out easily. They babied him and were very easy with him. It took 5 weeks for him to regain the use of his legs and it is still not 100%

Just give it time and love and he/she may be fine. I hope the best for you and your family!

Re: Our Dachshund's rear legs are paralyzed almost overnight
My small dog was paralized over night out of nowhere, took him to the vet, recommended exploratory back surgery because he was not sure about the cause, he also stated he could not guarantee the dog will come out allright or the success rate of such surgery --this is on top of the $3,000 I have to come up with up front---that is where I said, give me back my dog. I took my baby home, ( i have natural health training )gave him herbs, minerals, hydrotherapy and massages, he was back to normal in about a month, Thank G-d! Trust your instincts, some vets is all about the $$$$.

I have a mini doxie who jumped off the coach and her hind legs became vitually useless -- she was dragging them around like a mermaid. Dachshunds have an elogated spine and several discs in the middle are not supported by the ribcage, they are free floating. More than half of the breed suffers from spinal injuries at some point in their lives.

We opted to NOT do surgery. You should know that the spinal surgery has a fail rate of over 50% and it costs about $5,000. Instead, we worked with the vet (who was very agreeable) and used pain relievers (whch kept her very quiet/inactive) and medicine to keep the muscles fromswelling. Obviously, it was impossible for her to go outside, so I kept her wrapped in a towel which I kept changing. Dachshunds are most often hurt jumping down from furniture/beds.

However, she made a full recovery - it took six months (she is 4 years old) but you would never know she came close to being paralyzed.

Email me at [email protected] if I can be of any further assistance.

get him to the vet, and onto steroids quickly, as this is common with, back injuries from legs that are too short and jumping on and off furniture. after steroid treatment a neighbor's dogs legs mostly recovered. This is so common with them that for those whose legs do not heal, they make little "walkers" on wheels for their ends.

Cats can't get Lyme disease.
 Quoting: Godsontoo

What makes you say that? Humans get (man-made) Lyme disease.
Plum Island (in Long Island) where 'they' conduct biological deadly experiments is right across the Sound from Lyme Connecticut where the first 'deadly' tick was found a few decades ago. Coincidence? We think not.

But in my case, with my cat, he didn't have Lyme disease because that was one of the first tests they ran.

Not to get off topic too much (because this is probably devastating to the OP) but I had an 'experience' (and I'll leave it at that) around the same time.

Now, I am NOT saying it was related but having a plethora of unexplained circumstances happening within and around the same time was a little too much to ignore.
To this day, my cat was paralyzed and subsequently died from an unknown cause and that is a horrible reality ....from the owners prospective.

OP,

Sounds like this breed may be predisposed to back injuries. The elongated spine makes sense as to why.

An x-ray is probably in order. When you pet/rub his back, does he flinch or anything?

how old ? ..when 8 or more it is so when overweight not solved for too long, back legs are prone to this failure in this age, + connate vertebrae (many dogs have this from puppy age) and with more weight it is a problem

Get your dog to a vet. Our labrador's hind legs were paralyzed one morning and we could not get her to stand or to move. We called the vet and he mentioned that it could be neurological and had she eaten any nuts. We said no and as we were getting ready to leave, we found that she had thrown up nuts during the night. We have absolutely no idea where they came from, but there they were. After some investigation, we found that hazelnuts and in some dogs, peanuts induce spontaneous paralysis and most dogs recover within 48 hours as the toxins leave their system.
