check your county platt books - preferably the oldest one you can find and a newer one to make sure that this site isn't marked as a cemetery. it is a felony offense to dig up a grave...

Crime scene? What the hell are you people smoking? Who the hell takes the time to bury someone under rocks? Probably an old grave, or mine marker.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1003364

right, which is why I am ruling out crime scene.

now, since you said mine marker............I am about 10 miles from one of the first gold mines in the US.

Nice. If it is a boundary marker and your lucky, you may find a tobacco tin with a copy of the original mine deed inside!!! Found a few myself for mines going back over 100 hundred years and the paper was preserved in excellent condition!

Re: I think I found an OLD grave today
So I was doing my usual lunch-time walk on some trails with my dog in a patch of woods behind work when I saw a pile of rocks. It looked just like a shallow gravesite that would have been common in the frontier days and it was about the right size for a body.

After clearing away some leaves and a large branch that had fallen on top, I started removing rocks. I could tell that they had been there for quite some time as there was sediment in between the rocks. But I was running out of time and I could tell it would take me a while to get to the bottom cause the rocks were packed so tight.

As I sit here I am debating on if I should continue with it tommorrow. I might find something I dont want to see but they again I might find a body of someone who has been on a missing person's list for years.

If I go back tomorrow I will take some pictures.

Thoughts?

Any tree markings in the area? Could be a waymark for Confederate Knights of the Golden Circle treasure.

probably not a pet. the land is apart of a commercial property (my uncle owns). someone would have to go WAY out of their way to get to this spot. Also it would have to be one big ass dog to require such a large site.

you should investigate it yourself before calling anyone. it may be something else besides a grave, like a hiding place for money or gold.

...are you people for real? Do you know what the local wildlife would have done to a shallow stone grave? That shit would have been torn up and consumed within the first week as the body got nice and juicy.

This is very true. Some people did bury huge amounts of cash in "grave sites"... if you don't have a metal detector I would suggest you borrow or go buy a cheapy and scan the area before and during your excavation. Make sure you look for any unusual stones (carved markings on bottom or stones that are not local to the area and or different color).
