well it should be obvious that if you are talking about barefoot people that the nails would naturally stay short as you walk, run, climb, dig...all these activities would be like filing your nails, so i'm sure that those people didn't have to worry about that kind of stuff.

It's hard to find nail scissors strong enuf to do the big toenails. Filing makes sense, but it's a long way to bend.

People did not go barefoot "back in the day," unless you're talking about really warm climates or ancient hominids, and they would still need trimming to avoid injury. Humans need to trim their nails. They're different from apes in that way.

when nails get long, you can press down hard where the fingertip ends and bend the extra portion backwards a couple times (you put pressure on the part of the nail thats connected of course) and then tear at from the side. comes off clean.
