Due to the storm surge, directly on top of New Orleans is actually better than if it hit slightly to the west of the city. |

There is something about Houma and Morgan City, Louisiana that attracts these large killer storms that are otherwise bound for New Orleans. For some reason these big, blundering storms stagger inland at these points and are summarily led to slaughter into the Atchafalya Basin.
Remember what Hurricane Andrew did to Florida - guess where Andrew ended up? That´s right, the Atchafalya Basin. And what kind of disaster did South Louisiana sustain from Andrew? Not a damn thing worthy of mention.

Atchafalya Basin: That´s where the hottest of the hot water congregates off shore. Like a mouse to cheese it is, Katrina will want to goble that energy. The real Misssissippi River runs through the Atchafalya Basin. Aye Eeeee! I gar-run-tee hit. |

Unfortunately 3282, a lot of people will be riding it out because they can´t afford to evacuate and they are not organized enough to provide transportation and shelters for them. |

The category assigned to a storm isn´t based on pressure though. It´s based on wind speed, although the lower the pressure, the bigger the "vacuum" in the center and the faster air will rush toward it, meaning higher winds. |

they just upped the forcast intensity at land fall to a strong 4 or borderline 5 with sustained at 150 at landfall in new orleans. if this plays out there will be nothing to go back to there.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that this storm has gotten far less coverage (and hysteria) than the previous storms this season..Seems like Kartina just "lumbered in across Florida and now she´s on her way to La. |

Looking at the size of this thing, unless it´s taken a dive to the south - I don´t see why it would take till Monday to make landfall.
Looks like the northern edge coud hit the LA coast in a few hours. Depending on speed or stalls, I know, but still, why Monday? I say Sunday.

I´m sitting here watching "The Weather Channel" and I´ve just heard Jim Cantore´s report. I´ve been a ´weather-watcher´ for YEARS, and have always found his reports pretty down-to-earth, (but yet) serious with what effects a hurricane can cause.
I´ve seen Jim Cantore report for YEARS on all the major ones, but I´ve gotta say for my part I´ve never seen him like this.
If it didn´t seem like he was laboring with such difficulty to maintain his calm, I´d have to say he was absolutely terrified about "Hurricane Katrina".
He likened it to a caterpiller deep within a cocoon about to become a butterfly, and the fear (though video) relayed this with such clarity description fails me.....
You had to SEE it to KNOW what I mean. |
